People start winding up Home Office over #racistvan

I’ve been railing against the Home Office’s GO HOME campaign for several days now because it revives an old National Front slogan.

It’s worth noting that the #racistvan is only touring Asian-heavy areas of London (Hounslow, Barking & Dagenham, Ealing, Barnet, Brent and Redbridge) and offering only Asian languages for translation (Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu).

Anyway, this exchange was posted to Twitter today.

There have been other messages sent to the #racistvan number too and posted on Twitter

My text to clarify my legality … Hello, I’m worried that I may be guilty of illegally residing in the UK. I have only managed to trace back the ancestry of the last 4 generations of my family, none of which as far as I know have ever held a valid visa. I’m even more scared that according to Prof Richard Dawkins I may have originally migrated from Africa. How far back should I track my families countries of birth to ensure I am not an “illegal” and if so which “home” should I go back to?

Wanted White Van driver to drive van for government campaign…

I’m an American and told them it’s unfair that they don’t offer translation for us. He said it’s because I already speak English. So, in truest dumb YANK style, I went Hillbilly on his ads. Note, it appears they don’t speak Tennessean. And I don’t speak Brummie. I want equal rights!!!

And I certainly don’t speak auto correct!!!!

(Oops)

The Tories and Lib Dems should be ashamed of themsleves over this.

Whilst the sentiment is nice, it would come across better if you could learn to spell. I think you meant “rallying”.

Go ahead & write complaint letters but to waste their time? Possibly police time? Hmm… No…

I don’t see anything racist at all about these vans. And rather than waste the time of the Home Office, I’ve emailed them about the next door neighbors but one who seem to have a dozen young men living in a two up two down none of whom speak English or lived there a few months ago. The rest of the street is concerned like I am that they are illegals and I hope the police will investigate.

I’m astonished by the ugliness of the racist van. I think that the idea of it is quite disgusting.

I prefer to have illegal immigrants than to be in a society which behaves like this.

I don’t think the van will have any impact on illegal immigrants in any case. All it does is degrade the nature of our society.

Of course you prefer the presence of illegals I the country to a van asking people to obey the country’s laws, Patrick. Middle class types like yourself find it easy to strike meaningless poses when these criminal parasites aren’t taking your posh “skilled” job, nor turning your fancy cul de sac into a slum, nor taking up valuable social services that the well-to-do like yourself need not rely on. You can indulge an adolescent fantasy about what society ought to be like while those at the bottom have to put up the consequences of your preferred policies. Away wit ya mon.

If this is what Labour supporters have come to these days i do despair… “illegals”? “criminal parasites”? Hoping this is just Jim Murphy or Liam Byrne in disguise.

“Labour supporter” is like all those EDL types who adopt Muslim names. In other words, he/she/it’s a troll and not a very good one.

Labour Supporter- Listen to yourself, taking our jobs, turning our streets into slums, taking our services…
Who are “they” and who are “we”. Over crowding, landlordism, the lack of any one building social housing for 35 years is causing the housing issue. Cuts and privatisation is causing the problem with services. Finally the governements economic policy unemployment not immigration.

Rather then snitching on your neigbours or blaming eveything on migrants, working class people of all back grounds, migration statuses etc should be uniting to oppose austerity and the system.

Labour supporter… Interesting how you’ve classified ALL illegal immigrants and ..’criminal parasites’ , the cause of nice areas turning into ‘slums’ and a ‘drain on resources’. A number of people would say the same about your working class types! Those in glass houses …….

Labour supporter- you do not represent any labour party policy with your views. If you are a member, can I please ask you to turn in your red card and fuck off to UKIP. Thanks.

Dont you think it important to distiguish between people that are illegally here and those that are not?

If you feel we needn’t then who am I to diagree. It is however important I think to recognise how material circumstances affect the type of thinking being articulated.

In fact ,many surveys have shown that the people put under most strain from immigration are mainly the working class. Further that this view isnt restricted to the white working class.

It may be worth understanding this guys view because ultimately policy and politics have to address it.

Oh my goodness, I knew nothing about this van, that’s awful that it exists at all.
Will be adding my support and texting them. *devilish grin*

An excellent idea. I am still waiting for the home office to get back in touch – I selected OTHER languages. I want them to speak to me in Cornish. As it is now official language, they will be obliged to provide this support.

There is no one in until Monday.

78070 is a general text service that responds to keywords, so you’re not getting through to the Home Office unless you use their keyword – search “text 78070″ for some of the companies that use it.

I’d assume that any texts that don’t use a recognised keyword at the start are ignored but still charged.

@Labour Supporter

Of course, no migrants ever take anything other than unskilled work. Not a single one works for the NHS or in any other role at all. Well done on your implicit racist classism, Labour supporter. I’m sure the current Tory Labour party are very happy with your support.

If there was someone in your house legally, say a guest or workman, everyone would be fine with that. If there is someone in your house ILLEGALLY, say a burglar, then you would want that person removed. The vans are targeting ILLEGAL immigrants, so where’s the problem? legal migrants will have no worries, so again, where’s the problem?

cue put downs of me as i’m not a lefty liberal numpty.

also, how are these vans racist? is everyone trying to imply that illegal immigrants are exclusively non white? isn’t that a racist stance? sure illegal immigrants come in all shapes and sizes and colours?

@23

“also, how are these vans racist? is everyone trying to imply that illegal immigrants are exclusively non white? isn’t that a racist stance? sure illegal immigrants come in all shapes and sizes and colours”?

Oh really? Well who’s being stopped at tube and train stations in London? I’ll give you a clue: it isn’t white people. The vans *are* racist.

@24

“the only people offended by these vans are left leaning numpties like you lot. legal migrants won’t care a toss and probably illegal immigrants won’t either”.

Not only are you a terrible troll, you’ve pretty much repeated what you typed in the previous post.

How is this racist? You can be an illegal immigrant if you are black, white or any colour in between. I admit it is a bit of a pointless stunt, but immigration is out of control and this country is full of illegals. The number is unknown but it could be millions. Where do you start. All the illegals should be caught and shipped out.

I bet all the people complaining are either illegals or have illegal family members or friends and are protecting them. We need to tighten the borders and have system of immigration like Australia, we need to catch and either process or deport illegals. We need to monitor those coming in and going out the country. We need to deport all the illegals that have been convicted of violent or sexual crime.

This all smacks of ”liberal elitism” to me really.
I was at the ”Brixton Splash” event for a while on sunday. There’s plenty not to like about that kind of multi-culturalism. People smoking weed in the street under the noses of the police. White liberals down there to rub shoulders with working class black people celebrating West Indian British culture – but hardly an Asian person to be seen.
Apart from the Afghan guys who work in the market looking on and wondering (I’m guessing) what was this strange country they’d come to.
