By urging immigrants to ‘go home’ – the govt is legitimising a National Front slogan

This ad campaign by the Home Office has me seething with anger.

Go Home used to be a racist slogan used by the National Front in the 70s, for anyone of Black or Asian origin.

Until recently the BNP too had a policy of forcibly deporting people of ethnic minority origin. They should all ‘go home’ Nick Griffin used to say, and he even offered money for them to do so.

This campaign is a publicity stunt. There have been long-standing schemes by successive governments to offer incentives to illegal immigrants to go back to their country of origin. They rarely work since people fear persecution or feel they could earn more money here.

In other words this van emblazoned with ‘Go Home’ is a stunt designed to generate publicity in the press and give the impression the government is cracking down on immigration. IT won’t have muchany impact on the numbers at all.

But it does legitimise and bring back an old racist slogan.

It will encourage racists to scream ‘go home’ to anyone of non-white origin… after all, the government is saying it too!

It has brought back a slogan into use that my parents’ generation hoped that they wouldn’t hear again.

You wouldn’t believe it, but this van has been surprisingly effective in reducing illegal immigration: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/truck-illegal-immigration/

Seriously, I am wondering when we’ll see the “Pay taxes or face arrest” van in the City.

They might as well kit the driver out in a uniform made from bedsheets, and a pillowcases with two eyeholes cut out. Then they should fit the van with a loudhailer that periodically squawks out “Niggas, outta here”. It wouldn’t be any more racist, but it would at least be more honest.

Any one else have concerns about mental health at this point?

Racist

Do you have the IQ to know the difference?

@ 2 Random,

I have a theory that lefties enjoy using racist language, such as the N word, so they put it in the mouths of other people to legitimise their use of it. Care to comment?

@ 1 Andreas,

I look forward to the government campaign using these vans with such slogans as ‘criminals – give yourselves up and confess your crimes, or else face the possibility of being arrested, charged, prosecuted and convicted’

Good grief, the government is not saying “go home” to immigrants in general. The government is saying it to immigrants who are here illegally. Those people are not allowed to be here, by definition. So go home or face the possibility of arrest is a simple statement of facts. Of course, in context, it’s also an absurd publicity stunt that will have no effect whatsoever. Joined-up government!

Coz racists talk like they’re straight outta Compton.

Tell them to fuck off.

In a way I am glad that the State has just been so brazenly open about all this. For years the UK has racialized and brutalized asylum seekers and ‘illegal’ immigrants while keeping a ‘check’ on other immigrants.

Its long been this way, it has I believe lost the explicit concern with skin colour that it had in the 1960s and 1970s. But the process of racializing groups and oppressing them has been going on since then.

Oh btw, to the people who are challenging the ‘racist’ accusation with lazy and simple ‘but it aint about skin colour, its only about illegality’, you touch on something, if accidentally. There is a debate to be had about the content of British border controls and even, maybe making an argument that they aren’t racist or even bad (I would disagree) but remember racism is not a lazy question about skin colour, it is about specific targeted policies that racialize (ie, create an atmosphere of fear and enact oppressive legislation targeting a group) certain people and groups.

After all the Irish are largely white and there discrimination and State repression of Irish people in mainland Britain in the 1970s and 1980s.

Dear fucking god. . .

Don’t let on but Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), leader of the Conservative Party and twice prime minister of Britain, was the grandson of immigrants to Britain who settled here. In the course of the 19th century, Britain’s population trebled. There used to be a Primrose League to celebrate and promote Disraeli’s One Nation vision. Sadly, the Primrose League, founded in 1883, became inactive in the 1990s and was disbanded in 2004.

“Two nations; between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each other’s habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets; who are formed by a different breeding, are fed by a different food, are ordered by different manners, and are not governed by the same laws: the rich and the poor.” From Disraeli’s novel: Sybil

It’s a competition to see who can out-UKIP UKIP.

The move to the racist right has begun in England. The Tories are plain evil.

You guys need to ditch them.

So, no one in the chain of command questioned this? There is not one person ANYWHERE in the government or Tory party that managed to even attempt to stop this stupid fucking waste of money?

So, a spikey haired halfwit blueskied this idea at a brain storm meeting and instead of getting his front teeth punched out all the other kids ran with it? What is the point of ‘the thick of it’ is this is the type of shit the real cunts are coming up with.

These cunts are in charge! Fuck me, this wouldn’t look out of place in north Korea or ‘nineteen eighty four’, but how the fuck did this get passed what passes for quality Control?

Just what is this supposed to achieve? Anyone? So you have been forced to flee from a civil war or just escaped poverty or spent a lifetimes savings to get here and a van with a sign on it ‘shames’ you to go home to a shit hole or abject poverty?

I was about to be outraged as well, until I realised this was to do with illegality.

I am also interested to know exactly what happens when one texts “HOME” to 78070.

its one of a collection of policies seeking to win votes in my opinion. it is one of several policies designed to appeal to the base while avoiding real issues.

16. Man on Clapham Omnibus

Obviously another ‘no news’ day for Sunny to want to stick this tripe up. Interesting he should confuse race with illegality though. What about talking policy for a change Sunny?

It’s a publicity stunt, and I doubt that it will be effective. It is the government wanting to be seen to be doing something.

However, this article is typically disingenuous in its framing of the issue. The subject is ILLEGAL immigrants, not immigrants per se. Stop playing the martyr. It’s no more targeting you personally than a police hunt for a white rapist amounts to smearing all white men as rapists. This is not about you, you, you.

It appears you believe that the UK should have no control over its borders, since you believe it is ‘racist’ for there to be such controls. If that’s not the case, then why are you treating ‘immigrant’ and ‘illegal immigrant’ as if there were no distinction between the two categories?

Sunny is once again on the horns of a dilemma. It is quite clear that the ad refers to people who are here illegally. Either Sunny is saying that no one is illegal and that there should be no borders at all or he is condoning illegality.

The no borders campaign has been the biggest vote getter for the far right for several decades. Any responsible person knows that and while we may feel sympathy for people in other countries living in appalling conditions it is obvious that we simply cannot take them all, there isn’t room and our social system would collapse.

The Sunnys of the world and the far left generally, don’t care about that because they know there will never be an open door policy so they can demand one in the full knowledge that it’s never going to happen but it makes them feel right on and progressive.

Those of us whose parents or grandparents came here legally and have to foot the bill for the services that immigrants need like health care and education are as opposed to even the current levels of immigration never mind more.

It is rarely that I now look at this site as it is guaranteed that ridiculous articles like this one will appear just to fill up the space and make it look as if Sunny is worth including on a long list of PPCs for somewhere or other.

In the UKIP legally?
Come Home To Us
A party political mobile billboard from the Conservative Party paid for by Taxpayers.

One interesting idea is the notion that immigrants or the descendants of immigrants should naturally be expected to sympathise more with prospective immigrants than with the rest of the population.

But the idea that immigrants will always and everywhere seamlessly integrate is also an article of faith among many of the open-borders crowd. If that’s so then immigrants ought not to support policies that undermine Britain or Britishness.

So which is it?

21. Baton Rouge

I think this method is crude and for illegal immigrants scary not to mention bloody ridiculous but it is not saying go home to immigrants just to people who are not legally entitled to be here.

It s doesn’t urge immigrants to go home ,it’s illegal immigrants, anyway the problem with the Nf in the 70s was that the people they wanted to g o home were born here,

Lamia: “However, this article is typically disingenuous in its framing of the issue. The subject is ILLEGAL immigrants, not immigrants per se”

I don’t think Sunny is claiming it is explicitly telling non-whites to go home. The point is that it’s closely copying a very well known far right slogan, which has always been aimed at ethnic minorities generally.

It’s all about the purpose of the van.

Ministers would have to be insane to think that the van is about to convince a single illegal immigrant to leave the UK. But they’d have to be a lot less insane to think that it might send a message of solidarity (and, inevitably, encouragement) to people who like that well known “go home” slogan printed on the side.

Given the Prime Minister’s constant sabre-rattling about immigration-related problems which he must know are totally insignificant or non-existent (most recently immigrant use of the NHS and council housing), I don’t think it’s implausible at all that this is a deliberate tactic…

The point is that it’s closely copying a very well known far right slogan.

So some emotionaly weak leftists got upset because a sentenced reminded them of something some people said a few decades ago.

You are liabilities.

And not only that you are insulting those who came to this country legaly and have worked very hard to build an economic base in their community, their own jobs and business, their own propertys, THEIR hard work.

Yet you insist on playing a race card and try to drag them into it, all because a goverment you do not like is trying to tackle those who came illegally and for the most part have not played their part.

How do you feel insulting so many hard working decent people?

“I don’t think Sunny is claiming it is explicitly telling non-whites to go home.”

Hang on a minute. You’ve made a huge category jump there. Can you tell what it is?

And I’ll re-iterate: I think this is a stunt, I don’t think it will be very effective, and I agree that it’s probably aimed more at possible Tory voters than at illegal immigrants.

It still doesn’t help that Sunny’s argument implicitly denies any difference between legal and illegal immigrants. There is one, and it does matter.

I am not unsympathetic to the idea that some illegal immigrants need our help rather than being kicked out. I don’t believe in open borders, however.

Sunny seems to be posing a false dichotomy between options of (1) untrammeled immigration and (2) none at all + repatriation of people born here, on account of their skin colour. The NF’s ‘go home’ was vile racism. It’s not racist to think there should be some limits on immigration and that they should be enforced.

Thus however much of an stunt this seems to be, it is both disingenuous and stupid to be talking about a ‘racist van’. It isn’t racist, not least because a large amount (possibly most, for all I know) of immigrants to Britain, illegal or otherwise, are white.

Obviously another ‘no news’ day for Sunny to want to stick this tripe up. Interesting he should confuse race with illegality though. What about talking policy for a change Sunny?

For a start – please don’t tell me what to write about. In my own space and in my own time, I write about what motivates me, not what some anonymous idiot on the internet wants me to write about.

Secondly, I’ve already acknowledged this refers to immigrants who don’t have legal papers. But in your idiocy, or perhaps rush to post a comment without engaging your brain, you miss the point that its irrelevant who this refers to. It still brings back to life a slogan that has always had racist connotations and employed against all immigrants by neo-nazis.

Those of you who have not faced such calls in the past will clearly not get it. That’s fine, I don’t really care that you don’t get it. But don’t be under the apprehension that you’re being clever or revealing something new by typing the word ‘illegal’. It is besides the point.

Next van are you Disabled claiming benefits have you though of a cheaper way, euthanasia.

I think looking at similar campaigns in Arizona and Texas are instructive. There, they created a climate of suspicion and fear with Latino Americans because after all, as the original post says, you can’t tell someone’s immigration status by looking at them. But people can spot someone with brown skin and make wild assumptions. This happened repeatedly there, it will happen here too. The government knows this. It’s dog whistle politics basically. And people who argue that it’s not racist are deluding themselves.

As always, worth reminding those barking on with “but but they are ILLEGAL”, these people get no benefits (not even NHS as they can’t register with a GP), pay wodges in tax (not just VAT but often income tax using a legal resident’s NI number), use no social/ council housing, do the worst kind of jobs that need doing but aren’t taken up etc. From a strictly economic point of view, we have no cause to oppose those people. In fact, should be welcoming them.

As for the “ILLEGAL” bit, that old christian chestnut comes to mind, “don’t comment on the speck in your neighbour’s eye ….”

Aside from the distasteful “Go Home” slogan (I’m surprised that so many can’t recall the “P***s Go Home” far right slogans) there is also the question of the actual effectiveness of such roaming vans and the cost of them.

I may be in danger of stereotyping here, but if I were to attempt to target an illegal immigrant, then a fairly complex message on the side of a van would not be the best way to target them. We will be looking at people who may struggle with the English language, and may not readily own a mobile phone … let alone be able to instantly digest all of the information on the van as it drives past. Furthermore, how many will spot these vans in the first place when many are likely to be holed up in bedsits keeping a low profile.

So even if we leave aside the dubious wording used, it seems a highly ineffective method of attracting their attention (multi-language leaflet dropping seems far more targeted).

As Sunny suggests, the formatting of the slogans “106 ARRESTS IN YOUR AREA LAST WEEK” (does this message get updated from borough to borough, and from week to week?) rather suggests that the people that this advertising van is aimed at are Mr and Mrs UKIP-Floating-Voter. As such, is this van trying to actually reduce the number of illegal immigrants, or is it more engaging in electioneering?

Because I need to keep up to date with changes in UK visa rules and procedures I get a daily email from the UK Border Agency. While it does what I want it to, more often it tells me about arrests that have been made by the UKBA officials. So today’s email has details of 6 arrests at a sham marriage ceremony in Gretna and three arrests at a shop in Feltham, West London.

As such arrests for overstaying etc seem to take place if not every day at least several times a week.

The article doesn’t claim that the raids and arrests are conducted in a discriminatory way and nor does the message on the vehicles so I guess it’s right to assume that overstayers of any nationality face arrest. It’s also likely given the time over which the UKBA has been arresting people and deporting them or getting them to agree to leave, that they have some statistical basis on which to select the targeted areas.

There is of course the argument raised here that all overstayers / illegal immigrants should be offered an amnesty or just ignored and allowed to get on with their business. However abuse of the visa system makes the application process increasingly complex and expensive for those who have no intention of abusing it.

“As always, worth reminding those barking on with “but but they are ILLEGAL”, “these people get no benefits (not even NHS as they can’t register with a GP)”

Rubbish. I have never registered with a GP and I have still used the NHS. You don’t need to be registered with a GP in order to go into hospital.

“pay wodges in tax (not just VAT but often income tax using a legal resident’s NI number)”

So those ones are committing fraud too? Great. But the fact is most of them AREN’T paying income tax. let’s see you spin that as a positive for Britain.

“use no social/ council housing”

If it’s possible to fiddle NI numbers, presumably it’s possible to fiddle other documents and applications. You brought that up. As it happens, the amount of illegal immigrnt use of social housing is believed to be very low, but it’s not true to say there is none at all.

“do the worst kind of jobs that need doing but aren’t taken up etc”

There are plenty of young people who have never had a job because the job market is currently too saturated with labour. A supply of illicit labour just strengthens the hands of unscrupulous employers.

“From a strictly economic point of view, we have no cause to oppose those people. In fact, should be welcoming them.”

From a strictly capitalist point of view, you mean. Their presence helps inflate the pool of labour, thus making jobs more scarce and keeping wages down. But then that’s a strictly capitalist view, not a whole economic view, because it ignores the knock-on societal costs of high-youth unemployment, over-use of infrastructure, inflation of rents, depression of wages, and adding to the looming energy supply crisis.

“As for the “ILLEGAL” bit, that old christian chestnut comes to mind, “don’t comment on the speck in your neighbour’s eye ….”

Meaning what precisely?

I detect the hand of Lynton Crosby in this. It’s his MO.

“Are you thinking what we’re thinking” and all that.

@18

You said, somewhat hysterically.

“It is rarely that I now look at this site as it is guaranteed that ridiculous articles like this one will appear just to fill up the space and make it look as if Sunny is worth including on a long list of PPCs for somewhere or other”.

Methinks you doth protest too much.

It’s a good idea and one step towards dismantling the disgusting regime established by leech-like professional mandarins/racists who insist on the UK being overcome with migrants, so that they can lecture others about how to be “anti-racist”. SHUT UP FILTH

39. Step Left

Worth noting that the social security system, its cost and slow response time to accelerated population movements (from internal and external migrations) is frequently invoked as to why border controls have to exist. There is a real debate to be had about that.

However, it is worth noting that the welfare state reforms were tied up in the post-war nationalism of the British State, which contributed to various forms of State racism and societal racialism.

So, looking back, social democratic reforms contributed to the racial problems the UK experienced post-war, and will always enforce nationalist thinking to some degree, which excludes others from other nations.

Doesn’t this make it hard for ‘progressives’ (whatever that means) to defend the welfare state but complain about border controls/racism?

@36. Lamia: “Rubbish. I have never registered with a GP and I have still used the NHS. You don’t need to be registered with a GP in order to go into hospital.”

Never? You get registered during childhood owing to health clinics and the odds are that you have forgotten registration with a GP when you went to university (or akin). You are in the system somewhere, but it doesn’t matter.

Following my last encounter with a GP, I was starved for three days before being transported in a strange vehicle to a construction with bright lights where I was drugged whilst a tube was inserted into my anus. The medical definition for the procedure is colonoscopy.

After the aliens partially released me, after I became awake, I was not fed (I had slept through grub time) and I had missed visiting hours when my girlfriend might have brought a bit of scoff. The aliens fully released me after four and a bit days of starvation.

They said I was normal, OK, nothing to worry about. My arse weeped a brown stain on my girlfriend’s bedclothes.

I stay away from doctors ‘cos it is hard to cure problems and even harder to identify them. I have not registered with a GP for 18 years.

I’ll have a go at you Lamia about the presumption: that NHS and GPs can/will treat everyone equally.

I do not have to prove who I am: I am a well educated, white man; North European White; I speak UK English with a slight regional accent; my hair is long at the moment, but with short and long hair I have had no hassle with immigration controls.

Consequently, I can use UK services without anyone questioning whether I am eligible. I am English, so I am entitled, but it works out that anyone who could act as me would have similar rights.

For coffee coloured or black people, how should we treat them? What is the qualification to keep them alive? When is it appropriate for a UK citizen to carry a passport in order to access NHS services?

this is hilarious. Reminds of “Simon, Go Back!”. well, too late for that, lol. You stole, plundered, raped and subjugated our countries for hundreds of years. This forward thinking government should be applauded.

Can I just point out, because I can’t see it in any of your posts about this, that the Liberal Democrat bit of the Coalition didn’t know about this plan and wouldn’t have approved it if it did. The party is livid – and those within and outside the Whitehall Bubble speak with one voice. “Morally repugnant” was one phrase I heard the other day from a senior Liberal Democrat source. The Tories have pulled a fast one here – and can it be a pure coincidence that these awful vans are going round places where they hope to pick up votes in the elections next year?

Wow your views are prehistoric, I can already tell from the way you’ve worded your article, your stuck in the 90’s and have a bad case of the blinkers. This home office jobby has NOTHING to do with those of a different ethnicity, more so the immigrants that move here who have been given false hope of how good the UK is. Do you remember the influx of polish a few years ago? I now have numerous polish friends who are full of stories about what they thought the UK was like, and how much money you could earn and quality of life etc which all turned out to be bullshit. This home office message is targeted at those staying here ILLEGALLY and those who are struggling to survive here, remember the Romanian camp in London? It’s not the area that makes a slum.
And your silly misguided keyboard rants don’t do anything but allow people to know how uneducated you are.

@sunny I have noticed many people not understanding exactly why the racist van is racist, due to them being foriegn (US etc.) or just too young to remember. As horrible as it is Is there any footage or pictures of ‘×××× go home’ that could be found to help educate people into realising that this was a very real and horrible thing from the past? This would help strengthen your point. I have had a quick look around the net and youtube but could not find anything.

@ # 42

“For coffee coloured or black people, how should we treat them? What is the qualification to keep them alive? When is it appropriate for a UK citizen to carry a passport in order to access NHS services?”

What the hell are you talking about?

Someone argued that illegal immigrants could never use the NHS because they couldn’t register with a GP. I denied that was the case, because it’s not the case. And now you are twisting my words as if I was somehow arguing that the NHS should not treat people who have dark skin.

Take your ‘racist’ straw man and shove it, you prick.

52. Sandy Stupple-Harris

I don’t think the issue here is about making distinctions between racism and immigration law. It’s about the use of the slogan “GO HOME” in the context of immigration, which has awful connotations of racism and violence, espcially for anyone who remembers the ’60s and ’70s. To say that it’s used here literally rather than emotively is like arguing that the swastika pre-dates nazism, therefore it’s acceptable to use it in other contexts.

Is anyone in this conversation aware that there are more illegal immigrants/overstayers in Australia from the UK than any other country? Despite that, the media focus on boat people has led to their govt instrumenting a racist policy deporting indonesians, iranians and filipinos to PNG, while Europeans and US people continue to work in white collar jobs, taking pay under the table and not paying tax. Come on! Also I’ve lived in many many countries where people from the UK overstay or use repeated tourist visas to enter and work illegally, and mostly they think it is funny/clever. They’re not doing it out of desperation or to earn enough money to put family members through school or stop their family from starving or because they are in fear of returning to their own countries for a variety of reason. They are doing it for weather/cheap drinks/easy life.

62. Rita Wetherby

You are dead right. Spot on. It is not really even aimed at the immigrants and has no legitimate expectation of working. It is aimed at dragging UKIP voters back to the Tories and making gullible Tory voters think ‘something is being done’. It is only making everyone feel worse, even the bigots who approve of it.

I am an Irish immigrant to this country and even though I know it is not aimed at me it still makes me feel uncomfortable and slightly unwelcome to see one of these. What must all the tourists think?

This country has taken large strides backwards in the 3 years the coalition has been in. Who would ever have thought the Lib Dems,s would be propping up this kind of thing? Not me, I would say as a one time Lib Dem voter that they had lost my vote for their enabling of this shameful activity but I would be lying – they already lost it when they set about destroying the NHS with the stories. Roll on 2015!!

62. Rita Wetherby

Don’t be too sure of 2015. The Libs will probably end up in coalition with Labour if Dave and his troops aren’t goosestepping down the Mall.

do they honestly think thats gonna work??? lol its laughable, they dont have the funds or resources to deport anybody anymore unless they are a threat to the country. nobody is gonna think “hey i guesse i gotta pack up and leave now because a sign told me to!” lol no!
