A poll by YouGov for University of Southampton out today illustrates the extent of public disillusionment with MPs.

Only 33% agree MPs have the leadership to tell the public about the tough decision necessary for the economy.

80% agree they are too focused on short term headlines.

72% agree politics is dominated by self-seeking politicians protecting the interests of the powerful.

But only 26% think that politics itself is a waste of time.

People also want stronger action on tax avoidance though

62% of people think it is unacceptable for people and companies to LEGALLY avoid paying tax, 29% think it is acceptable.

Labour are currently seen as the party that would do most to cut down on tax avoidance, but even they are only on 21%. 31% think none of the main parties would tackle tax avoidance.

“Only 33% agree MPs have the leadership to tell the public about the tough decision necessary for the economy.”

But you keep telling us that the only “tough” decision required is to BORROW MORE!

Politicians really do have a right to tell outright lies and between themselves they truly believe that they have a license to do so. The reason I say this is because as far back as I can remember they have always lied and cream of what they can from the system.

They are no different than a common criminal !

62% say they reckon bears shit in the woods.
92% think the pope is catholic.

Surprise! Surprise! Evidently, not much has changed since the report of this survey in April 2009

The Bankers are just as bad as politicians but the hatred for Bankers is shared worldwide !

The survey is dreadful; very biased wording in the questions, which are anyway very long and couched in language unfamiliar to most respondents.

I’m sure there’s something in the position you’re taking on this: there’s little doubt in my mind that politicians tend to be self-serving, and they definitely concentrate too much on the short-term; but this survey is a poor attempt to investigate the situation. It’s so bad that it may do more harm than good.

I think you’re setting the bar a bit low if you think any of those constitute hate.

I despair for any generation of haters without the imagination to want MPs impaled on giant thorns and disembowelled by bear-sized shrikes.

Recap research findings in 2009:

“Public funds totalling £500 million a year are being spent on an army of at least 29,000 professional politicians in the UK, according to new figures.”

Compare that with the British electorate of about 45 million.

It would be interesting to see a poll of what politicians think of the public.
