Cameron fails UK Citizenship Test on US chat-show

David Cameron was on the late-night chatshow by David Letterman in New York last night – the first for a sitting British Prime Minister.

But the interview didn’t go exactly according to plan, reports the Guardian’s Nick Watt.

A report in the Guardian says Cameron was asked who composed the music for Rule Britannia after the band struck up the music from the Last Night of the Proms.

“Elgar,” he said uneasily. “You are testing me,” he added.

Cameron was also later asked what was English for Magna Carta. Cameron did not know, and Letterman explained it meant Great Charter.

Time to scrap this silly test perhaps?

I don’t have an issue with him not knowing the composer of Rule Britannia.
He could have guessed Magna Carta -it’s fairly obvious.
Letterman should have tested him on some really searching questions, such as:
The price of 250grms of butter
The price of 2 litres of milk
A litre of fuel…………and then perhaps?
Why is David Laws in Government and why didn’t he sack Mitchell and Hunt?
Why is the economy in a worse state than the last lot of charlatans left it?
Why do the coalition hate disabled people?
Why do Tories think it a crime to be poor?
Why do the electorate have no respect for politicians?
Why are M.Ps’ expenses back up to pre ‘scandal’ levels?

You may or may not be surprised to know that no Latin translation is included, and that there are no sections covering 18th century composers.

The test itself is utterly fatuous. Why on earth you need to know the number of under 19s to the nearest million, or precisely what proportion of the UK population are declared Muslim to .1% is beyond me. Equally, whether women obtained the right to divorce in 1875, 1882 or 1857 seems to me much less important that the fact that they do have that right.

Agreed. There are a few reasonable question in there (“What are the minimum ages for buying alcohol and tobacco?”; Who has the right to vote and at what age?”), but for the most part it’s irrelevant trash. Why being able to memorise demographic statistics would be considered relevant to your Britishosity is beyond me. And, yet again, it looks like a lot of born ‘n’ bred Brits would fail this test.

What is this for, anyway? Pacifying the worst of the press? If it’s supposed to test integration, you’d be better off with question like “What size glass is beer traditionally served in?” and “Who killed Heather in Eastenders?”. Although it would still be pretty sodding fatuous.

8 – I failed the online practice paper, as I suspect most people would who hadn’t crammed from the official textbook. “The Council of Europe was founded in 1948, 1949, 1950 or 1952?” I mean, come on. What proportion of the UK population knows that off the top of their head? 1%? Less?

It was a Blunkett innovation I think, and I can see the appeal of some form of citizenship test – after all you would have to have lived in the UK for quite a few years before taking it. But why the questions are so utterly ridiculous is beyond me.

In the test literature, not loving someone’s schmaltzy attempt to sing Britain’s praises: “What brings British people together is that they listen to different points of view, they have respect for equal rights and they believe that community is important.”

Cameron surely knew what ‘Magna Carta’ meant! He simply could not have got through his particular schooling without having enough Latin to know the lteral meaning of the phrase. So either the misunderstood the question or he was afraid to seem even slightly learned (unlike BoJo, who wears his learning lightly)….

It was a gimmick designed to appeal to the ‘genuinely concerned about immigration but not racist’ crowd. Blunkett wanted to show he was concerned about ‘integration’ etc.

The problem with any such test is that essentially is whatever crietria or questions you ask in a citizenship test is inevitably going to exclude a significant proportion of the natives anyway.

Actually, now you say it, that second possibility seems pretty likely. Knowing Latin doesn’t exactly help when you’re trying to avoid having an elitist image.

CG @ 23: Yes, I agree. Most probably, Cameron just wanted to seem ‘prolier-than-thou’. Curiously, for one so confident, he seems somehow ill at ease in the public eye – though good in a crisis. Compare BoJo: asked about Magna Carta, he would have rode a classical riff — and charmed many by his learning and faux-humility. (I write in a non-partisan way.)

Unsure – it’s a bit weird that it only gives you four questions at a time. I generated 10 questions and got 8 right, so I suppose that’s a pass?

The US questions seem less stupid and teach-to-the-test than ours, although I note a strange preference for history over relevant questions like “which side of the road do you drive on?”

Chaise, I think the reason for the history questions in the US test is that these add up to a description of what the US is in structure.
