Libyans sorry for terrorists burning US embassy – pics

There are increasing signs that the attack on the US embassy in Libya was orchestrated by Al-Qaeda rather than local groups.

The Quilliam Foundation is nearly certain while the New York Times says US officials increasingly believe it to be the case.

Libyans seem to have reached that conclusion too. Yesterday, they held this demonstration in Benghazi

Are you saying the attack was not carried out by Libyan Muslims?

You can’t just say “don’t worry, it was the bogeyman”.

“President Obama condemned the killings, promised to bring the assailants to justice”

They were probably using weapons he supplied to them a year or so back. You know, when we were bombing our former friends and their opponents.

Do they think the whole world has Alzheimers and won’t remember what happened last week?

Seems the attack are spreading to other countries, Yemen has an attack at the American Embassy, it was stopped, Egypt also is seeing problems.
Watching the attack on TV it looked bigger then the group who stated it was wrong.

Fair play to a lot of ordinary Libyans for standing up against terrorism using a peaceful protest – something that they have so little experience of after a lifetime under tyranical rule.

May this become the norm in their civil society…

Why Matt?

Are you particularly keen to dismiss such actions as those of a tiny minority so as to support some other view of people in Libya?

Surely the bigger story is that Lybia now has spontaneous peaceful protests for peace – which is in itself a remarkable statement about a country with its recent past.

The fact that so many are willing put themselves at risk of reprisals is amazing. Lots of headscarves but as far as I can see no covered faces.

Yeah, but for some reason religious people are rarely won over by the “it’s all just fiction anyway” argument.

A religion is a bunch of people. Insult the religion means insult the people. But make no mistake, most Muslims don’t give a rats about some film. Those that do pretend to speak for the rest. But they are liars.

Margin4error, no I am not out to disprove anything. I just want to know the reality. If these protesters are a minority, that’s a shame and a bit of a concern because it probably means they won’t be listened to.

How many demonstrations include most of a country’s population? Popular uprisings probably involve less than 50% of the people, let alone demos.

For now, it appears that the demonstrators strongly outnumber the people who attacked the embassies.

I share m4e’s concerns: it does look like you’re searching for excuses to ignore this.

Lol are you serious? You two seem awfully defensive. I’m just asking questions. I dont have any pre-conceived ideas about the Libyan people. I have no idea if the morons who attacked the embassy are a fringe group or part of mainstream Libyan society, which is why I’m asking questions.

@Matt – it’s hard to tell really, a small amount of people can manage to do a disproportionate amount of damage, the London Riots for example – what percentage of the British population would you say rioted? What conclusions about the British would you draw from their actions? What about the broom brigade, were they a better example of the true British character?

The unfortunate truth is that to destroy you don’t need ‘majority backing’ or even greater numbers, lest we forget that 19 guys brought down two sky scrapers and a portion of the pentagon using Americas transport infrastructure against itself.
