Cameron’s personal ratings go from bad to worse

When a polling firm calls David Cameron’s latest personal rating as one of his “worst”, then you know he is in trouble.

Cameron used to be an asset to the Conservative party, seen as a strong and decisive leader. But no more.

The latest Yougov polling show the opposite.

Worse, he gets a thumbs-down from a sizeable minority of Conservative voters: 27% of them think he is indecisive and 25% accuse him of being out of touch.

Peter Kellner says the re-shuffle only reinforced those opinions.

If anything, you made things harder with your reshuffle. Take health. You had two courageous options: to insist that Andrew Lansley had done a great job in pushing through vital reforms and keep him as Health Secretary; or admit that the reform bill was botched and appoint a new health secretary whose job was to put things right. Instead, you sent a profoundly uncourageous mixed message: that the policy was right but the man wrong.

Butch up, Cameron. That’ll make you assertive and in-touch! I hope Ed Miliband just brings him a coffee this week at PMQs, or perhaps a glass of wine.

Thing is, while the media is obsessed with ‘U-turns’, I’d be happy to forgive a leader who came straight and said ‘Sorry, we tried this tactic, we’ve now seen that it isn’t working and we’ll do all in our power to fix our mistakes and make things better.’

However, it seems, at least right now, that they’re convinced that the way to go is, seeing that everything’s going horribly wrong, and they’re losing voters hand over fist, to keep on driving deeper into the ground, refusing to deviate from the mental route they’ve chosen.

And a more confident PM would have had the common decency to acknowledge the people who brought the Olympics to London, in spite of them being political rivals.
