Spoof newspaper attacks Olympics sponsor ‘abuse’

Campaigners yesterday handed out spoof copies of a newspaper resembling and now-defunct London Lite, attacking the Olympics sponsors for alleged human and environmental abuse.

One of the campaigners even wore a giant head of Olympics chief Lord Coe. They distributed the paper to travellers at east London tube stations Liverpool Street and Old Street and other local places on the eve of new financial results from the controversial Games partner Rio Tinto.

Another London Late article cites allegations that Adidas – which has already boasted £100 million sales of its Olympic merchandise – exploits Asian factory workers toiling up to 65 hours a week and paid a basic wage as low as £10 a week.

The Olympic security contractor G4S, already denounced over recruitment and training failures, is highlighted in the paper for alleged human rights abuse in Britain, Afghanistan, Palestine and Australia.

A fourth Olympic partner, Dow, is accused of failing to pay full compensation and clean up the site of the Bhopal chemical plant disaster, which has claimed 10,000 lives in the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

It also cites BP’s oil extraction from tar sands in the Canadian province of Alberta killing off swathes of forest, which in turn drives climate change, and contaminating water supplies, with illness soaring among indigenous communities.

And London Late reports that another Games energy partner, EDF, is at the centre of nuclear safety concerns and secret dumping of uranium in Siberia.

The paper has been produced by five organisations – the London Mining Network, the anti-poverty charity War on Want, the Bhopal Medical Appeal, the oil campaign group Platform and the UK Tar Sands Network.

Oh, that’s where making back the costs of sponsorship comes from in the other post then.

Note to the innumerate. Sales do not equal profits.

Spending £100 million in sponsorship and gaining £100 million in sales is not making your sponsorship money back.

@1 – Correct, but making £100 million in sales is still making £100 million in sales – the clue is in the “in sales” that appears after the “£100 million”

I too have failed to compensate thr victims of Bhopal.

In other words, is there a good reason Dow should be paying? IIRC correctly it wasn’t responsible for the disaster.
