Awful US media coverage of Sikh shootings

In what is now being called an act of “domestic terrorism”, yesterday a gunman shot dead six worshippers at a Sikh Gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
The gunman – described as a white male with a 9/11 tattoo – fired on a police officer and was killed in the return fire by a different officer. The wounded officer is expected to survive.
The US media isn’t used to covering the Sikh community, and that showed through some of the awful reporting on the incident.
Don Lemmon asks on CNN, “Do Sikhs have any traditional enemies?”… Uhm… like mongooses are the traditional enemies of snakes?

And then of course there was the CNN reporter who said Sikhs were being targeted “unfairly”… as if Muslims would be targeted fairly.

Look Sikhs have always only been attacked because they wear turbans, No Mosques have had a massacre yet! Many Muslims like it that the Media makes people mistake Sikhs for muslims. Muslims are supposed to be brave, yet they love it when Sikhs get mistaken for Muslims! During 9/11 CNN showed osama Bin Laden on a split screen, and on the rest was live footage of a Sikh Scientist who was pulled of the train because FBI thought he was Osama Brother, but he was a Sikh and train passengers were bigots they spat on him chanted kill osamsa brother. The CNN did not once say, he we are showing a Sikh in a split screen and a Osam in the rest and people are gonna harm Sikhs! Anyhow Sikhs are not Muslims, why do Muslims want non-Muslims to become muslims for?

These are some examples of the shocking cultural ignorance that pervades much of US society. Mind you, I once overheard some council officer ask a Sikh what his “Christian name” was. Breathtakingly insensitive.

I wasn’t there, obviously, but I’d hesitate to read too much into that. In the UK, “Christian name”, “first name” and “given name” tend to be used interchangably, and people tend not to stop and think about a familiar term each time they use it. For obvious reasons this also adds to the confusion when you’re dealing with someone from a culture where family names come first.

@Chaise: while I take your point about English common usages, when English people say ‘Christian name’ to mean ‘Given name’ they are actually flat wrong, and as recently as the 50s people still knew the difference. A given name is the one given to you by your parents during infancy; a Christian name is the name you choose for yourself at the moment of adult baptism into the Christian faith. Buddyhell therefore does have a point; as do you.
I’m rather alert to this kind of thing as I grew up in a tribal culture which was about 1/3 Muslim, 1/3 Christian, 1/3 indigenous religion. As an example from among my childhood friends, I grew up alongside someone whose given name was Mutari but whose Christian name is Gideon.

I was wondering about that after I posted, actually, as it occurred to me that the most logical reason to call something your “Christian name” would be that it was given to you on your adult baptism. In any case, regardless of how etymologically wrong and misleading it may be, “Christian name” for “given name” seems to be common usage.

Weeelll… I wouldn’t blame them for not vetting every single word they say, but if that person regularly had to ask for people’s given names, I do have to wonder why they were in the habit of saying “Christian name” in the first place. It is insensitive, just thoughtlessly so rather than maliciously.

Its amazing that even when you have a crime involving a lone nutter directed against the Sikh community someone like Kate turns up to have a go at Muslims. Its makes me wonder whether some people actually take delight in such atrocious events simpl because it gives them a reason to have a go at other innocent people.
The other article on this has very similar comments to @ 1 Kate, in the same rambing unclear style, but by the name of Mark Wills. I suspect they’re the same person.

I’m so glad someone else caught this. It’s almost as though the subtext of the coverage is “surely he meant to gun down a bunch of Muslims – and that we could all understand.”
