Labour keeps attacking Lord Green over HSBC

The Conservative peer Lord Green is under attack again today by Labour over unanswered questions over the HSBC scandal.

A report by a US senate sub-committee last week found that HSBC failed to prevent massive money laundering by drug cartels when Lord Green was HSBC’s chief executive and then chairman.

Labour shadow minister Chris Leslie said he was “treating Parliament and the public with contempt” by refusing to answer questions.

Lord Green was a member of the Cabinet Committee for Banking Reform, and in November 2011 was appointed to support the Chancellor on financial services and banking issues.

Chris LEslie said in a statement today:

With his repeated refusals to answer questions about what he knew and when, Lord Green is treating Parliament and the public with contempt. He is not just a Minister in David Cameron’s government, he is also an adviser to the Chancellor on banking issues and a member of the Cabinet Committee for banking reform. He must be accountable to Parliament

HSBC says new leadership is now in place and that they apologise for, and want to put right, what when wrong. But when the man who was head of the bank at the time is now deeply involved in banking issues at the heart of government, he cannot keep hiding from answering questions about what he knew and what action he took.

On Saturday, Chris Leslie wrote to Lord Green setting out some of the questions he must answer. A reply has not yet been received, but the letter can be read here.
