Netroots next week: what it is all about

In less than two weeks time Netroots UK will be hosting the biggest digital-activist focused event of the year.

The aim of Netroots is to find ways in which the web can be harnessed to connect with other people and encourage change. That’s it. This year we will have a special focus on the NHS bill and how activists can fight it.

It’s different from most political conferences: we want people to get involved, be inspired and learn from other activism taking place. There will be three types of sessions: strategy, training and wider discussions.

The idea behind the original Netroots Nation was to leverage social media and other tools for political action.

None of us believe blogging alone will change the world. But social media makes that job easier, and it also allows many more people who couldn’t normally get involved (such as the disabled) to play a part too.

NHS sessions
There will be three NHS sessions. One will focus on ‘entryism’ and how you can learn about the new NHS structures being put in place and how you can get involved to keep an eye on what’s going on. You may even be able to halt some local privatisations.

Another session will focus on mapping how the NHS bill will affect services. We need to track how services will be affected across the country, and this session will explore how this could be done. A third session will feature the newly formed National Health Action party and other activists looking at how the fight can be taken to Parliament by directly targeting Tory and Libdem MPs.

If you’re passionate about the NHS and want to save it, then we hope some of the speakers can empower you to get involved.

Netroots UK will feature speakers including:

Clifford Singer (False Economy, MyDavidCameron websites)
Naomi Colvin (Occupy)
Sarah Hartley (Talk About Local)
Chris Coltrane (comedian and activist)
Rowan Davies (Mumsnet)
Prof Allyson Pollock (academic and NHS writer)
Marie Campbell (38 Degrees)

The breadth of energy and activism is important to us. The event will encompass activists from trade unions, long-established NGOs to newer groups, activists from UKuncut, Occupy, Change.org, 38 Degrees, bloggers, writers and more.

Netroots UK isn’t a space to promote any particular party, but to help build an infrastructure that lives outside the party political system. It is there for people to use to build their own platforms or get involved in other projects.
