Tory MPs ‘outraged’ Labour not worshipping the Queen enough

It started with Tory MPs complaining that Labour MPs were not showing enough subservience and enthusiasm for the Queen:

How dare these people carp on about little things like slave labour?

It also turns out.. *gasp* that some Labour MPs aren’t exactly enamoured with the Queen!

Oh and there’s this

BLASPHEMY!! — as the Pyongyang Times might say.

Tory MP Priti Patel, who has been curiously silent about people being exploited by companies, has actually released this statement:

It’s shameful for the Deputy Chairman of the Labour Party to attack the Queen and the Jubilee celebrations in this way. Tom Watson should apologise for these comments and Ed Miliband should condemn them immediately.

Just amazing.

Personally found it disgusting how many Labour MP’s supported this disgusting undeserving institution. Including those who take the title “Lord”.

Surprised she didn’t go the whole hog and demand he be tried for treason.

@Martin:

On the other hand, if all Labour MPs refused to take the title of Lord then the House of Lords would be overrun with Tories. Not exactly a useful situation in which to stand on principle.

How are Watson’s comments an attack on the Queen? I cannot construct any criticism of the Queen or the jubilee in that tweet. Does Patel’s full statement explain what it is she finds objectionable?

I could not care less if we have a Monarchy or not. Though I do think it will be difficult to spin it’s so called non political nature when Charlie becomes King. Seeing as he has gone out of his way to tell us his various political views on different topics.

But the bit I dislike is how the Right uses the Monarchy as something they can high jack to promote their ideological agenda. It becomes a tory pissing contest. “Your bunting is not as big as my bunting. Your groveling is not as worthy as my groveling. Your flag is not as big as my flag” tories always make dicks of themselves. Funniest moment of the weekend was Medieval thug king lover David Starkey crying on ITV. Hilarious. Worth keeping the Monarchy just to see tory twats make tits of themselves.

I thought this unelected Queen derives her title and right from God (and from her parents of course) regardless of public approval.
Why does she need worshipping?

I don’t know how Priti Patel is an MP, I really don’t. It’s shocking, it really is appalling, it really is.

Janvier,

It’s very generous of you to suggest she has any idea what she’s talking about and/or cares to know.

It really is.

Michael White’s comment is the most insidious of all. Why is he still at the Guardian?

Don’t you just love the sort of people who go around calling on leaders to condemn and disown their own members?

It’s all about trying to create limits to acceptable discourse and thereby impose your own values as the only ones that it’s respectable to hold.

Let’s suggest from now on that the Labour leader should never condemn any of his/her MPs, nor ask them to apologise, whatever they say or do. Otherwise, he/she is really just helping the Tories.

They are so politically correct those Tory MPs.

Is there a law that we should all, Labour Party included should worship the Queen.

The same Tory right wingers who love to bash ‘political correctness’ as a clampdown on freedom of speech, yet if one expresses an opinion that they disagree with, they move terribly quickly to suggest that that opinion should never have been expressed and must be withdrawn and apologised for. Such double standards and hypocrisy. Priti Patel isn’t exactly known for well reasoned arguments either, as demonstrated by her appearance versus Ian Hislop on Question Time and the discussion over the death penalty.

You all had a good time didn’t you? That means everything’s fine. Remember subjects, questioning any aspect of the jubilee is a personal insult to our queen. Any suggestion that our MPs should divert their energies from adulation to protect the rights of the poor and vulnerable is akin to wanting El Presidente Blair for life!

Whatever happened to the free speech these Tories always claim to love?

ukliberty: in terms of quite how Patel manages to be an MP, there’s an element of the Herman Cain/Alan Keyes problem: if you’re both a member of an ethnic minority group, and are seeking a career in a political party that dislikes people from ethnic minorities but wants a few token figleaves, you’re likely to be some combination of halfwitted, insane and corrupt.

Michael White completely misses the point. This private company (Close Protection UK) got bucketloads of taxpayers money to organize the stewarding of the pageant on the river Thames. The taxpayer has a right to expect that the stewards will be properly treated and paid. But instead the company pockets the cash and tells the stewards that they are “unpaid volunteers” – knowing that their unemployed victims will not complain if they think there is even a small chance of getting some paid work during the Olympics. Especially if they are worried about the threat of losing their benefits.
But I don’t blame the Queen for the consequences of workfare, exploitation, the privatization and ‘contracting out’ culture that was introduced by Thatcher and actively advanced by ‘New Labour’.

Labour MPs are always having a go at their Tory counterparts on Twitter. I think many of them are under the impression that Twitter matters.
If we’re going to start bashing Tories then I don’t think we should single out Priti Patel (or Sayeeda Warsi or Louise Mensch). For some reason (i.e. sexism) – women politicians are always seen as “soft targets”.

What seems to have been missed in all the noise about the exploitation of desperate people is the question of how good they could have been at doing the job they contractors took on. If they were required to do anything more than block certain routes or point people in a specific direction what would have happened? In an emergency, for example? I can’t imagine they had much, or adequate, training.

@ 18 Ben

“If we’re going to start bashing Tories then I don’t think we should single out Priti Patel (or Sayeeda Warsi or Louise Mensch).”

We should totally single out Sayeeda Warsi. When high-profile Tories are stupid, unpleasant individuals, it’s a tactical mistake to ignore this out of fear of being hit with straw man claims of sexism.

We can single Gove out too if it helps.

@15 – Whatever happened to the free speech these Tories always claim to love?

They use it to voice their opinion of things, much the same as you do. Keep up sweetheart.

Ben: utter concern troll bullshit. Warsi gets called out because she’s corrupt and grossly incompetent. Patel, Dorries and Mensch because they’re grossly incompetent. Suggesting they get called out because of sexism is heinous sexist nonsense.

1 – In Warsi’s case she’s the official Tory party attack dog– sorry, co-chair. It would hard not to single her out when she’s spouting nonsense on behalf of the Government/Tories.

2 – There’s a risk that MPs like Patel will use ‘sexism’ as their ‘deflector shield’/diversion tactic every time they’re criticised for saying something stupid (Mensch has form for this).

3 – Don’t worry: I’m sure Jacob Rees-Mogg will be making a statement soon. He’s just got to find the right quill to write it with.

I really really really really hate Michael White.

Calm down dears. Tom Watson has made it clear he was not attacking the Queen or the Jubilee celebrations. In fact, he has posted online pictures of his family’s Jubilee party. What he objected to was the exploitation of the event by politicians, including the PM, whilst unpaid jobseekers were working in atrocious conditions.

A little miserable perhaps, but not unreasonable.

26. David Moynagh

Never mind folks. There will be” Under the Bridge” places left vacant for Cameron and Clegg (The Flashman and Fag coalition) come the next election. Glad to report we only suffer one tory MP up here in Scotland but it is one too many. We consider them more verminous and parasitic than a plague of rats. Independence will sort matters out for us. Oh HM the queen did give royal assent to the tory welfare bill which includes provision for exploitation of the sick and unemployed.

john b@16, I wish that had occurred to me – seems spot on.

Agree or disagree with the death penalty, putting aside the claim about “deterrence”, I don’t think you can seriously suggest she makes a good argument for it. She clearly doesn’t know what she’s talking about and much of what she says is word salad.

This person is one of our leaders! Why on earth shouldn’t we comment? Just because she’s a woman? Isn’t that sexist?

Warsi currently under the spotlight because of serious allegations she’s been on the fiddle. I guess you don’t remember the MPs’ expenses scandal – most of them were men.

The day Elizabeth, Philip, Charles et al walk the streets of my home town, successfully curing the disabled with their ‘touch’ is the day I give the royal family any real credence or accept their deservedness to be in such a position as they are.

It’s ok, Cameron’s already healing the sick and disabled – you’ll only have to look at the figures to show how many bedridden and crippled people he’s ‘successfully’ moved from Incapacity Benefit to Jobseeker’s Allowance, saving the country a worthy thirty quid a week!

Seem he and his chums at ATOS only have to say someone’s fit for work and it’s true, they know better than the doctors.

Only one thing, how is an extra million unemployed a good thing? Wasn’t the argument that Labour pushed people onto sickness benefits to hide the unemployment figures?

Personally I’d fix it by making anyone who’s living on public money like the Queen to make sure they’re hiring at least one member of staff for every 50,000 quid they receive.

If we’re going to make the unemployed do stupid pointless work for the royals and their hangers on, then the royals can pay for them.

Agree that the attack on Tom Watson was both pointless and desperate. Was like a murderer demanding an apology because your dead wife bled on his trousers. “Oh never mind the massive abuse, look at the minor irrelevant thing!”

I think most of us, even the non royalists, didn’t have any problem with the Jubilee or people enjoying it, we’re just angry that yet again, the poorest and weakest members of society are getting abused by the rich and powerful. None of it the Queen’s fault, but would be nice of her to ask them to look into it so her subjects are not mistreated on her behalf again.
