Man with 14 heart attacks ‘fit for work’

53 year old Paul Mickleburgh has had four failed transplants and suffered 14 heart attacks. He is also one of the world’s longest surviving kidney dialysis patients.
He has also been told by the Dept of Work and Pensions to attend work-focused interviews and actively look for a job or face a cut in benefits.
He says the stress of worrying about “cruel and nasty” welfare reforms led to a heart attack three weeks ago.
He told the Herald Scotland:
How ill do I need to be to pass their test? Apart from being dead, I don’t know how I can get much worse. It makes me so angry.
I was asked to tell them all my illnesses. When I had finished it was a page-and-a-half long. I enclosed all my medical history, medication, dialysis times, and what it does to me after being on it for 33 years.
But to my great shock I have been passed fit for work under these new rules and must attend work-focused interviews and do everything possible to find work or lose my benefits.
He said the government was acting like Nazis – Wworking the disabled and the sick until they dropped dead and were no longer a burden”.
According to the Herald Scotland, Mr Mickleburgh also has a mechanical prosthetic valve fitted in his heart, a twisted bowel, and suffers agonising joint pain as a result of prolonged renal treatment.
A spokeswoman said: “We shouldn’t automatically write off a person’s ability to work, solely on the basis of a health condition or disability.”

A spokeswoman said: “We shouldn’t automatically write off a person’s ability to work, solely on the basis of a health condition or disability.”
Of course you shouldn’t, that’s just common sense.
But at the same time you shouldn’t be such a twat
Whats up with him then – says he’s had heart attacks but doesn’t say what his present condition is. Can he walk, talk, do things ? If so, why shouldn’t he be expected to look for a suitable job ? He won’t make a professional footballer but if he can do light work, why not ? He says the fear and worry gave him a heart attack – for that the media and disabled lobby need to take some responsibility as these issues are being sensationalised by both ‘sides’ and THATS whats really going on
[2] ‘Whats up with him then’ – he’s getting fucked over by ATOS, a French company who made their name in information technology, not health.
Lets recap – this man is a long standing kidney transplant survivor following four failed attempts at kidney transplantation – he has suffered 14 heart attacks (with increasing degrees of heart failure every time part of the heart muscle infarcts).
Have you got any idea how disabling it can be being wired up for dialysis for 3-4hrs (3 times every week) while a machine tries to do the work of a near defunct kidney?
May I suggest you rename yourself ‘not intelligent’ rather than ‘not cruel’?
@3 Have you got any idea how disabling it can be being wired up for dialysis for 3-4hrs (3 times every week) while a machine tries to do the work of a near defunct kidney?
He/She obviously didn’t as that was the question being asked. Seemed fair enough to me
A spokeswoman said: “We shouldn’t automatically write off a person’s ability to work, solely on the basis of a health condition or disability.”
Sorry? Could you run that past me again?
Does this mean that Employment and Support Allowance, paid to those unable to work solely because of illness or disability, will now be withdrawn?
Please sign my petition against the benefit changes that have left sick and disabled people with no income: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/31667
cheers
How can you be a Tory and not be aware that you’re a despicable moron? I just don’t understand how these people sleep…
@Cathy (6), job done.
[4] ‘Seemed fair enough to me’ – of course it does, but then again I doubt if you suffer from end stage renal or cardiac failure?
We are now moving toward a climate were it is OK to imply that those suffering with such conditions are somehow malingerers until the ATOS computer, sorry, assessor says otherwise.
“A spokeswoman said: “We shouldn’t automatically write off a person’s ability to work, solely on the basis of a health condition or disability.””
This is so wrong it’s not even funny. The whole premise of ESA was supposed to be about recognising limited capability for work and supporting people into work, while recognising that they cannot maintain the full effort of keeping up with the JSA conditions – hence the name “Employment and Support Allowance”. It was never supposed to be about “writing people off”.
That seems to have totally gone, and it is now just a renamed incapacity benefit, even to the DWP themselves. But it’s also a renamed incapacity benefit with new criteria that are almost impossible to meet, as any ability to work at all seems to be seen as fair game to chuck the person off it. To some extent this fraud was also present when New Labour introduced it but the present government has just stuck the boot in under a massive cloud of deception about what’s really happening.
Whats up with him then – says he’s had heart attacks but doesn’t say what his present condition is. Can he walk, talk, do things ? If so, why shouldn’t he be expected to look for a suitable job ? He won’t make a professional footballer but if he can do light work, why not ? He says the fear and worry gave him a heart attack – for that the media and disabled lobby need to take some responsibility as these issues are being sensationalised by both ‘sides’ and THATS whats really going on
This is the type of halfwit these attacks are supposed to appease. No one with an I.Q. above 75 and/or an ounce of compassion in their bones thinks the victim of this harassment is capable of holding down a job. Fuck me, every Tory who regularly uses this site has had the gumption to steer clear of this because even your average Tory knows this guy will never work again
What kind of ‘thought’ process do the political elites think has went into this?
A guy rolls up to an interview and says: ‘I am use a kidney dialysis machine for three hours a day, have had fourteen heart attacks and an incurable disease that leaves me in near constant pain’ and an employer looks at him, ignores the millions of fit, able bodied people looking for work and says ‘Yeah, okay, start on Monday’.
This is why I despise the Tory vermin. This is exactly why I find them objectionable. It is not because I oppose them at a political level. I despise mindless cruelty for the sake of it. I am sick to back teeth hearing that most Tories are decent people, who happen to have different views to the appropriate methods to solve same issues I would see solved.
Obviously, it goes without saying that the more unpleasant bastards like SMFS and Paul Newman will support this, but what about the ‘decent’ Tories that we are assured exist?
None of the Tory ‘usual suspects’ think you can turn a fifty three year old man who has suffered so much pain and suffering life around with a ‘work focused interview’. This guy has been dragged into this to provide one of the most objectionable people on this island pleasure. We are told by many Tories, including IDS a few weeks ago, that no one goes into politics to cause pain, but for fucks sake.
Are we saying it is easier to persecute this guy than face down the lice that infest the tory party?
They really are the nasty party, they prove it more and more each and every day. This is way way beyond the pale. Soon, people will wake up to the fact that these toff fuckwits with no brains despise the rest of us, see us as mere cattle – goyim – just grist for thier capitalist mill..
@ 11 Jim
“This is the type of halfwit these attacks are supposed to appease. No one with an I.Q. above 75 and/or an ounce of compassion in their bones thinks the victim of this harassment is capable of holding down a job.”
Or possibly he could theoretically hold down a job, but for some reason the ideal job that would suit his ability to “walk, talk and do things” without causing him suffering or putting his health at risk isn’t being reserved for him by a kindly would-be employer.
That’s half the problem with the whole “technically capable of working” schtick: if your condition makes (say) 80% of jobs non-viable, you have 20% the normal chance of finding work (ok, clumsy stats, but you see what I mean). Plus, as you rightly say, his health might prevent employers from offering him even jobs he would be well-suited for.
The guy’s been through a lot and is still going through a lot. I’m not going to cry over the infintesimably small amount of my wages that go towards making his life easier.
CG @ 14
Or possibly he could theoretically hold down a job,
How many employers do you know who would employ someone who is going to need three hours a day of work for dialysis? How many employers are going to allow employees the chance to have a sickie a couple of times a month? How many employers are going to give a 14 time heart attack victim a job?
In fact, given that only last week the sub human were bleating about ‘employment rights’ were the cause of the collaspe of the Western World, what kind of ‘help’ would this man need to get back into work?
I know this man will never hold down a job, you know this man will never hold down a job and every Tory knows this man will never hold down a job.
This man and thousands of disabled people are being tortured for the entertainment of the IDS and the other scum.
Jim,
Do the Tory vermin include James Purnell and David Blunkett. These were the ‘socialists’ who initiated the notorious WCA. Easy for IDS and Grayling following these two.
It seems the DWP have put this unfortunate man into the Work Related Activity Group (WRAG). He should appeal this decision and will win.
Other virmin are the BMA who during consultation approved the ATOS assessments and companies such as BEST who run the WRAG at no benefit to anyone other than themselves.
Blunkett has a retainer with the infamous A4E. Purnell has returned to a previous life as a ‘learned friend’. Lower than vermin?
15
You are confusing the introduction of the system with the way certain individuals implement it. Anyone with any knowledge of disability would understand the problems this man experiences and the nil chance of him getting employment. The stress of being considered ‘fit for work’ will exacerbate his ill-health, even if he appeals and wins.
On the other hand, disability in itself should not be a reason why people cannot work, it’s about degree. And this case illustrates poor judgement at best and total disregard for another human at worst.
I work with people who have a serious mental health condition and since the tories came into power I have seen a large increase in people being called in for assessment and, although all are subsequently considered ‘unfit’, it has had a negative impact
@ 14 Jim
Next time, read the whole post instead of going off on one based on the first sentence. Ta.
Stevenb@16
The ESA system is unfit for purpose. Some 40% of appeals are successful and when the claimant is represented the rate is even higher. It takes over six months to get to appeal such is backlog. This is evidence systemic failure.
The real culprits are the incompetent Labour ministers, Purnell and Blunkett and the interest groups at consultation before implementation. MIND were involved at this stage. Shame on them too.
Mr Mickleburgh has my sympathy but that is not much good to him.
I need to see the ESA50 and ESA85 to find out what has gone wrong.
incompetent Labour ministers, Purnell and Blunkett
Pretty sure at this point, with the evidence from their actions in other arenas, that we can dispense with the “don’t mistake incompetence for malice” bollocks and just realise that those two in particular DID act with malice. It’s also entirely possible they acted with incompetent malice too.
Some people have heart transplants or other surgery after earlier heart attacks.
And afterwards are pretty much back to full health.
My father in law is one.
Not sure how rare or common it is to get back to full health.
But if it is possible, then the right question to ask is:
“What are you physically capable of today”
and it’s not sensible to ask:
“How many heart attacks have you had”
For health and safety reasons, no employer would ever give this man a job and they must know that.
[20] ‘Some people have heart transplants or other surgery after earlier heart attacks.
And afterwards are pretty much back to full health’ – how many of them had x4 failed transplants attempts and require dialysis at least three times a week?
Symptoms of end stage renal failure include:
General ill feeling and fatigue
Itching (pruritus) and dry skin
Headaches
Weight loss without trying
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Other symptoms may include:
Abnormally dark or light skin
Nail changes
Bone pain
Drowsiness and confusion
Problems concentrating or thinking
Numbness in the hands, feet, or other areas
Muscle twitching or cramps
Breath odor
Easy bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in the stool
Excessive thirst
Frequent hiccups
Sleep problems, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, or obstructive sleep apnea
Swelling of the feet and hands (edema)
Vomiting, especially in the morning
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000500.htm
Pity the ATOS computer didn’t realise it, eh?
@21 and @22.
This man is very ill and unemployable.
The DWP know it, you know it, I know it. We all know it.
However the WCA and DWP do not function rationally.
The man with ultimate responsibility for this dogs breakfast is David Blunkett. His dog could have done better.
England was a civilized caring nation not so many years ago.
Now this nation cares not for it’s most vulnerable in society and what makes it worse is the evidence that we are prepared to watch them really suffer an onslaught upon what last dignity they have.
What a sad nation we have become because this does not have to be !
Anyone else think this workfare thing is no wgetting really stupid. When’s is soemone going to call time on it? Ah…that’s it. The Condems don’t care what we think. It’s all about ‘small state.’ He should have savings/family to rely on!
