Libdem MP asks Clegg about PM’s arms trip

Two weeks ago we wrote about Cameron’s trip abroad to sell arms, and pointed out that such actions were against a Libdem conference motion (passed after the 2010 election) explicitly against such action.

And yet the Libdems said nothing about the Prime Minister’s trip abroad to sell arms.

So a Liberal Conspiracy reader wrote to her Libdem MP to ask why he hadn’t said anything.

Libdem MP Mark Williams has now written back saying he had always held a negative view of arms trade and has written to Clegg.

His letter:

To The Right Hon Nick Clegg
Deputy PM
House of Commons SW11AA

Re : The Prime Minister’s Support for British Arms Sales to the Far East

I am writing on behalf of a constituent who has contacted me regarding the PM’s recent tour of the Far East where he promoted and therefore showed his support for the British arms trade.

My constituent noted that Conference voted on the following statement in September 2010 for
‘an end to Government promotion and support for the arms trade including shutting the exports promotion unit, the UK Trade and Investment Defence & Security Organisation and ending export credits for military goods’.

I would be grateful if you would, given the above, explain to my constituent what position you hold regarding the Prime Minister’s statements in support of the British Arms Trade.

Credit to MP Mark Williams for raising the issue. If only other Libdem MPs were so diligent on the issue too.

Well done!

I once had a truly awful New Labour MP who always represented the government to voters but never wanted to represent voters to the then Labour government.

On an unrelated subject, we hear so much about how indebted Greece is but recently a number of articles have appeared in the Guardian about how that debt has been caused by very high military spending.
