This morning a group of political pranksters hijacked the London 2012 website and sent out a fake press release from the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), in order to highlight their unethical decision to make BP “Sustainability Partner” for the upcoming games.

The story was picked up by several media outlets, including a live interview on LBC Radio and an article in City AM.

The group, calling themselves The Campaign for a Sustainable Olympics (CAMSOL), said that they were taking action to highlight BP’s unsustainable practices across the world, including the Deepwater Horizon spill and the Canadian tar sands.

They also pointed out that BP’s decision to close its solar energy division showed that it had given up on any pretence of trying to avoid disastrous climate change.

Harry Broadbent, from CAMSOL, said:

BP’s current business plan of increasing the supply of fossil fuels from dirtier and dirtier sources, such as the tar sands, would lead us to a rise in temperature of 6 degrees – which would spell the end of life as we know it. LOCOG clearly named its Sustainability Partners purely on the basis of who wrote the biggest cheque.

The campaigners want BP dropped as Sustainability Partner, as the company’s current sponsorship activities are undeservedly improving its public image and allowing its destructive activities to continue unchallenged.

Are we going to get some direct action too, like with that Trenton bloke who disrupted the boat race?

it’s one form of doubling-down – we have to bear the cost of the Olympics and then the burden gets greater because all the sponsors and viewers pull out. Trebles all round!

@ 2 I like a man that calls a spade a brush. Why dont we get the BNP to sponsor the the Olympics? That way we can save a little more cash.
