Even Mail readers don’t buy Tory workfare spin
The Daily Mail has this wonderfully whiny story today where frustrated Tory MPs lash out at everyone from the SWP and the BBC to Mumsnet and even Guardian reporter Shiv Malik for their collapsing Workfare scheme.
Tory whiner Priti Patel has made a “formal protest” (not complaint) to the BBC, accusing it of “being biased in favour of the protest led by the Left-wing Right To Work organisation”.
Shiv Malik is accused of all sorts of things, and Mumsnet apparently are taking orders from the Guardian too.
You couldn’t possibly fit more whining and teeth-gnashing into the story.

But very amusingly – even Daily Mail readers aren’t buying the Tory spin.
All the top-rated comments on the piece are against the idiotic Workfare scheme.

Nice try Tories but the Daily Mail audience isn’t buying your rubbish.

This is why the politicisation of the police force is such an attack on democracy.
“Waaah, the SWP have hacked the Mail website”
Who is the attractive girl?
These aren’t “Mail-readers” in the sense that the term is used as short-hand for “ignorant reactionaries”. It’s a website, and there’s a tendency for comment scores to indicate either a strongly leftwing or strongly rightwing readership, probably based on whether or not the story has been linked on leftwing or centrist sites.
Sunny, it would be a big mistake to assume that this means that the Mail’s target market have your back, if only because of the risks involved in resting on your laurels.
Anti-capitalist extremists eh? Those Tory focus groups really must have said loud and clear that the electorate doesn’t like the far-left.
No Cyclux, it’s a standard Tory reaction going back generations whenever they get into difficulty with public opinion. They start having paranoid fantasies about reds under every bed in the country.
Subtext: if they’re to the left of the Labour party, then the only response is to send in the Police to break up their gathering.
As Voltaire famously didn’t say:
“I may disagree with what you say, but so long as its not too different from what I say and you don’t get in my way then I won’t send people to beat you up for saying it”
Top comment: “what I would like to see are the figures”.
Your wish is my command. From the Touchstone blog:
“Early outcome data from this initiative was published in November 2011. It found that after 13 weeks on the programme, 49% of participants were still claiming benefits. But over the same period, the normal rate of departure from JSA for young people was higher, with an average of 47% of young people across the JSA caseload still claiming at this point. If anything this early data suggests the scheme is making it slightly harder for young people to find work, as spending eight hours a day undertaking unpaid work may be making it more difficult for them to focus on applying for jobs in the open labour market.”
“This is why the politicisation of the police force is such an attack on democracy.”
The Police are ALWAYS political, they are the violent arm to protect the State and its interests.
All Right-Wingers have shifted to the Guardian CommentIsFree section.
