The animal-rights charity PETA has been getting a lot of flack today in the UK for understandable reasons – their new ad campaign is absolutely atrocious.
But that isn’t the only offensive video on offer. Yup, PETA actually went out and made more to support that campaign.
and
WTF were they thinking?

Good grief! Every vegan I’ve known has been a pale, skinny misery. Perhaps the diet has affected PETA’s collective brains?
One can, at least, see why they need an image change…
Around the same time, in Russia, Leo Tolstoy gave up meat because of his concerns about animal cruelty. In “The First Step,” his “essay on the morals of diet,” Tolstoy claims that meat-eating is “quite unnecessary, and only serves to develop animal feelings, to excite desire, to promote fornication and drunkenness.” Later, in the early 20th century, English schoolmasters recommended vegetarian diets to their students as a means of curbing their appetites for self-abuse.
But that doesn’t explain why the bloke in the original video looked like such a dork.
I need to get home before I can watch this (I doubt it would go down well blaring across my office), but is this just another example of PETA desperately trying to use the “sex sells” principle? I mean, “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” made sense. “The Naked Truth” was nonsensical and gratuitous.
Why PETA would choose such a crass way to promote veganism is beyond me – if they want to point to the benefits of a vegan diet they should point out that Gladiators were largely vegan (look it up folks – decide for yourselves) and many top athletes and body builders are also vegan. CHERUB – some vegans, like many people, don’t really understand the importance of correct nutrition, which may go some way to explaining your vegan acquaintances and the incidence of deficiency cited in BenSix’s interesting link. Please don’t associate all vegans with PETA and their marketing team.

OK. I still think they’re mad.
WTF were they thinking?
Well, given their older campaign to try and get people to call fish ‘sea-kittens’, and the habit some of their members have of raiding science labs and releasing the animals ‘into the wild’ just down the road (whereupon the local predators become very well fed for the next couple of days), or even the existence of this website, I think you give them far too much credit by accusing them of thinking.
That just make PETA look desperate. Have their donations started drying up?
PETA has become notorious for its sexist imagery. Not sure if you’re all aware, but it is planning to open a porn site.

The weird thing is the vegans I know are all hard lefties and feminists. Strange, self involved organisation.
