Daily Mail writer: Hurrah for French fascists!

by Sunny Hundal

I missed this extraordinary column in the Daily Mail last week.

Richard Waghorne writes – French downgrade shows that Marine Le Pen’s role in French public life is not just legitimate but increasingly necessary. [link fixed]

No seriously. You’d think after ‘Hurrah for the Blackshirts’ – the Daily Mail wouldn’t go down this route.

But they certainly have. Waghorne writes:

The only credible political actor in France to recognise these facts for what they are is Marine Le Pen, who quickly noted that the loss of France’s triple-A rating profoundly compromises the rest of the political class, which almost without exception supports the uncapped sacrifice of sovereignty and treasure to extend the lifetime of the Euro.

The elegant and increasingly incisive leader of the French National French appears to be free of many of her father’s drawbacks. She is additionally the only significant voice in France to diagnose the Euro-federalist threat to her country’s future accurately. Before yesterday’s sovereign downgrade, the prospect of her displacing either Nicholas Sarkozy or his Socialist challenger to make it through to the two-horse second round of the French presidential election was gaining in likelihood.

Apparently her father only had “drawbacks”. It’s not like he was an anti-semitic fascist or anything.

If guilt by association is the best you’ve got, I suspect Marine Le Pen has little to fear.

Perhaps the honest question is, is *she* an anti-semitic fascist?

On the face of it, the fact that she was right about the Euro when the entire rest of the French political class got it disastrously wrong surely counts as a point in her favour.

“She is additionally the only significant voice in France to diagnose the Euro-federalist threat to her country’s future accurately. ”

False, Hollande has.

Funny, the right-wing posters above are quite unable to condemn fascism.

Telling.

@4 Of course they aint goingt to slag off the fascists, some of their best mates are fascists.

@2
Thanks, but I do not want to add to the paper’s visitor figures.
Can anyone supply the link with a “No follow” command?

7. Chaise Guevara

“French National French ”

I wish this was actually the party’s name, it’s fantastic.

Typical tory. Their hatred of the single currency would make them cheer on the fascists.

Now where have I heard something like that before? Oh yes the 1930s. And that turned out so well.

It isn’t the first time Tories have given succour to fascists and it won’t be the last (members of the NF were Tory entryists in the 1970′s). They make great bedfellows. After all, it was Germany’s conservative Centre Party that handed power to Hitler and his thugs (Yes, I appreciate that there are subtle differences between fascism and Nazism but the differences are quite small).

@ 4 that’ because they are Franco and Le Penn loving fascists

Go on Con Home- there are some Franco loving fascists on there that appear to be quite at home in t he Tory party

Sally/buddy hell,

Has any Conservative (or Tory if you prefer) said anything here to support facists, rather than a Daily Mail columnist (no stated political allignment) who has not actually supported them but noted that as a democratic alternative to the Euro-federalist model he percieves (I would suggest correctly to a fair degree) unites the Gaulist and Socialist parties Mme Le Pen has a role. It may be rather more favourable to the leader of a fairly unpleasant party than we might wish, but it is not actual support.

But then again, when was the last time you read something and thought about rather than reaching for knee-jerk reactions? Although to be fair (and ignoring the strange assumption that Conservative = Daily Mail – it doesn’t, nor do either represent all political right wing philosophies…) Sunny’s headline is somewhat misleading – it kind of implies the outright support for the blackshirts the Mirror and Mail produced on the odd occasion in the 1930s, not a slightly (by Daily Mail standards – remember we are dealing with people who may equate abortionists with Satan…) nuanced article.

@8 – Sally

And of course in your Socialist Utopia you’d love the single currency.

How Blairites like yourself who sucked up to murderous dictators overseas, supported George W Bush and lied to go to war, is the god father to Rupert Murdoch’s child, have the cheek to raise their heads and criticise anyone is beyond me.

Anyone who voted Labour after the death of John Smith, which you did Sally old boy, should be truly ashamed and stop casting the first stone…

13. Anon E Mouse

@11 – Watchman

Paul Dacre, the Daily Mail editor is is personal friend of Gordon Brown which hardly makes the paper a Tory one.

Right wing yes but so are Labour….

@9. buddyhell: “After all, it was Germany’s conservative Centre Party that handed power to Hitler and his thugs…”

That argument does not work. There were fools prepared to appease Hitler in parties across Europe. It can be argued that, being German, the Centre Party should have understood the threat better. The most prominent dissenter, Heinrich Brüning, backed his party on the basis of “party discipline”, thus providing a profound lesson to all that you should do what you think is right and stuff the party.

15. So Much For Subtlety

Apparently her father only had “drawbacks”. It’s not like he was an anti-semitic fascist or anything.

And yet if he were an Islamic anti-semitic Fascist he would have been given a column in the Guardian’s Comment in Free. Like so many others.

These views are much more common and much more acceptable in modern politics mainly because the Left gives them so much support. Oh, and Ron Paul. That is deplorable. But it is hardly a problem with the Daily Mail alone. If the author really cared about anti-semitism in British political newspapers he would condemn the Guardian. If he really cared about fascists winning the support of major papers he would condemn likewise.

16. Leon Wolfeson

@15 – So not only do you not bother denying your support for the far right, you’re still stuck in the conspiracy theory that free speech means you condone everything said.

Well, that does explain why you work so hard to shut down left-wing speech, since otherwise you believe you were supporting it.

Mme Le Pen should very worried about being associated with the fascist Daily Mail…

@14

“That argument does not work. There were fools prepared to appease Hitler in parties across Europe. It can be argued that, being German, the Centre Party should have understood the threat better. Au contraire, mon brave. The Tories keep trotting out lines like “The Nazis were left wing” while conveniently ignoring the uncomfortable historical truth.

Nice try but no cigar.

@11

You’re dissembling. Why haven’t you engaged with my point about the NF? Is the truth too uncomfortable for you?

“But then again, when was the last time you read something and thought about rather than reaching for knee-jerk reactions”?

I could ask you the same question, friend.

7 leftwting comedians Ricky Tomlisnon and Mark day etal were in the NF beofre joining socialist parties
