18 months since they came to power, the government is broadly in the same position with prisoners’ voting rights as the Labour government was when it left office: raggedly kicking the issue into the long grass, and without any clear plan to resolve it.
The latest episode in the ongoing saga has gone largely unnoticed by the press. And there is a very good reason for keeping track of the issue: it offers an interesting parallel with criminal justice policy more broadly.

In an interview with the Telegraph today, Chancellor George Osborne says he will relax employment legislation and make it easier for companies to fire employees.
Workers will be prevented from suing employers for unfair dismissal during the first two years, compared to a year as it is now.
Rather than spur economic growth, this is more likely to worsen growth prospects, and will make life more difficult for young workers.
