What Boris’ speech today won’t say #cpc11

by Sunny Hundal

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson is due to give his speech to the Conservative conference today.

These are some of the facts since his administration started that he is highly unlikely to mention in his speech.

On Police cuts
Boris Johnson has cut London’s police by almost 2,000 officers
Over 1,000 locally assigned borough police officers cut in the last year alone
Boris Johnson to halve the number of local safer neighbourhood team sergeants

On Crime
Since Boris Johnson was elected:
Young people (aged 13-24) injured by knives up 34 per cent
Common assault up 8 per cent
Shoplifting up 20 per cent
Bike theft more than doubled – up over 100 per cent

On Tube delays
Tube delays up almost 10 per cent since Boris Johnson was elected
Over 3 million customer hours are now lost every month

On fares
Single bus fare up 56% since Boris Johnson was elected.
Zone 1-4 travelcard up 23 per cent to £42.60 – costing Londoners £416 a year more.
Fares have risen above inflation every year since Boris Johnson was elected.

Sunny, fares were going to rise much as they have done no matter who won the Mayoralty last time. And I doubt that the delays would have been much different under Ken. The system is pretty clapped out. At least Boris has got rid of the bendy-busses that no one outside the Labour Group on the GLA ever had a good word to say for.

Isn’t the reality that Labour are letting Ken run again because they don’t have a better alternative of Boris’s age (he’s 47) or younger? Why isn’t there a younger Labour politician as popular with lefties as Ken – for some reason I can’t fathom – still is? What does this say about the ongiong viability of Labour as a political formation?

Mike – who would you have liked to run instead?

Maybe the reason they selected Ken is that he’s got plenty of experience in the role and he’s well known to the electorate. He was only defeated by around 6% of the vote in 2008 at a time when Labour were close to their lowest popularity. Now that the Conservative support has fallen and the Johnson novelty has worn off he’s got a pretty good chance of winning.

Why risk a new face when Ken has a very good chance of winning? Also, I’m not familiar with the system, if he wasn’t selected could he run as an independent candidate thus splitting the Labour vote?

Sunny

There may be fewer Police officer’s now on the Met payroll but there are more on the streets. That there are fewer behind desks performing HR or admin functions should be a cause for congratulation, not complaint.

Under Boris we now see a situation where

* one million more patrols annually in May 2012 than there were in May 2008.

* crime in London down by almost 9%

* robberies are down by 20%

*youth crime is down by 15%

*murders are at their lowest level since 1978.

In fact, London is the safest it has been in 10 years.
