Schools entice hacks with girls, on A-Levels

We are all aware that the newspapers feature happy, jumping, young girls as soon as A-Level results are announced.

There is even a blog that documents this phenomena.

But did you know that some schools try to entice journalists by pointing out how ‘beautiful’ their girls are?

The FT’s Christopher Cook writes today:

But what might shock you is the enthusiasm with which schools encourage the use of pictures of pulchritudinous blondes. Indeed, a little cadre of English private schools compete to supply attractive young women to the national press.

Last year, I received an unsolicited voicemail from the press liaison at Badminton School in Bristol: “Hi Chris, . . .Just wanting to give you some details of some absolutely beyootiful girls we’ve got here who are getting their A-level results tomorrow. Some lovely stories . . . They’re amazing girls.” Bedales School in Hampshire helpfully supplies photos to journalists, sending out pictures of some of its pupils celebrating GCSE results. Oddly, it seems to forget to send out any photos of its male students (or its dowdier girls).

Most alarmingly, another (very grand) private school invited the FT education correspondent to an end-of-year sports event. I was, alas, too busy. It was a shame, I was informed by a senior teacher. He said that watching the girls playing sports would have given me a unique opportunity to pick out promising candidates for A-level day pictures.

Isn’t that a bit…creepy?

1. Cynical/Realist?

Bloody hell. I’m surprised they don’t set the sprinkler system off when the snappers get there. This made me feel a little bit sick.

This article is useless without pics.

What?

Ew. That’s like something you’d hear on Catch a Predator.

Ew.

No doubt it’s just the same sort of harmless fun as carrying on about Pippa Middleton’s bottom…

That’s seriously creepy. But then the media did that whole ‘count-down until she’s legal’ thing with Billie Piper and Emma Watson. We have squalid media, is it he media we deserve?

7. DisgustedOfTunbridgeWells

No doubt it’s just the same sort of harmless fun as carrying on about Pippa Middleton’s bottom…

Like they have on top gear?

“No doubt it’s just the same sort of harmless fun as carrying on about Pippa Middleton’s bottom…”

Do they get offered $3m by pornographers too then?

@8 Heh, I’d forgotten about that part. However I clearly remember being sternly told that my concerns were unfounded and nothing misogynistic was going on and that Pippa would have appreciated the complement, as no doubt these college girls would. Indeed Tim Worstall pulled me up on my apparent incorrect use of the word ‘animus’ when describing the public-sanctioned lechery fest.

Creepy, disrespectful, rude, bordering-on-paedophilic, predatory, unprofessional, disturbing, distasteful, opportunistic, manipulative… List goes on. And smacks of patriarchal privilege. “Ooh look at these young girls we have on offer”

Because that’s not at all wrong is it?

EURGH. Fucking misogynistic wankers.

Excuse the swearing.

“Isn’t that a bit…creepy?”

Just a bit.

@10

“…bordering-on-paedophilic…”

Fancying 18-year old girls is now tantamount to paedophilia is it? Don’t get me wrong, I find the actions of these schools to be bizarre but let’s not go over the top.

I like the bit when a bunch of fit 18 year old blonde haired girls jumped in the air whilst holding a bit of paper.

well alright they might not be blonde, but from the picture, I can see why they might appear on the sun website. Disgraceful sexist nonsense…but still…

17. Flowerpower

It’s not just schools who do this. Haven’t you noticed how Labour Party press officers are mighty picky when stocking the platform or lining up donuts for Ed Miliband photo-ops?

Of course it’s not just the blonde aryan types ‘cos there’s a diversity awareness in play, innit. But funny how it’s always the buff ones up-front. The butters variety is always well hidden away, trust.

Likely to be more of this as the party embarks on its next-generation-Labour “tomorrow belongs to me” strategy.

Hypocrisy anyone?

You have issues so deep that even if the fires of hell rained down upon the land condemning every man to an eternity of suffering and hell you”d still be pissed off.

My niece is beautiful and she”s amazing but im not attracted to her, there is more than one way of looking at a women than your one sided twisted femananzi views..smacks of patriarchal privilege!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Halloway

Since the article mentions GCSE as well as A-level results, your point hardly stands. Adults drooling over 15-16 year olds *is* pretty creepy.

It’s not really that that bothers me most though, it’s the misogyny. I understand that schools feel they need to court publicity and that newspapers are hardly interested in the number of girls who got an A in chemistry, but when even your school appears to think that as a woman, your appearance is the most important thing, and that it’s fine for them to use your body to sell a product, we really have reached a depressing state of affairs.

I also feel for the boys. At an age when they tend to lag behind girls academically, they need encouragement and for their achievements to be celebrated. Instead they are ignored. Hardly the right message to either gender.

20. Chaise Guevara

@ den

Right, because anyone who objects to the idea that women should only be valued for their looks obviously hates all men. Yawn. This tired and insipid accusation has been leveled at pretty much anyone who has ever spoken out for the rights of women and it is as transparent and moronic now as it always was.

If your really think there is ‘more than one way of looking at women’ then surely you would agree that it’s wrong that only those deemed beautiful are allowed a space in the public consciousness. I’m glad that your niece is beautiful, but if she wasn’t, wouldn’t you still feel that she should be valued as a human being and her achievements celebrated? Doesn’t it also bother you that the achievements of boys are ignored on results day because their bodies don’t sell newspapers?

Also, if you are going to cast aspersions about the mental state of other posters, I would politely suggest more commas and less exclamation marks, lest you make yourself look foolish.

“Right, because anyone who objects to the idea that women should only be valued for their looks obviously hates all men. Yawn”

Its not that you object, its that you place every single issue in your twisted feminist minds on-top of the objection, feminists with big mouths and nothing to do who cant stop at a simple disagreement no no no the WHOLE WORLDS designed this way ” insert 74 nasty words about those EVIL men!!!”

“If your really think there is ‘more than one way of looking at women’ then surely you would agree that it’s wrong that only those deemed beautiful are allowed a space in the public consciousness. I’m glad that your niece is beautiful, but if she wasn’t”

What do you mean if she wasent? I said she is, the view of another means nothing to me however can we just cut the crap here and admit people do not like looking at people they perceive as ugly and they much prefer to look at someone who they perceive as being pretty, no amount of feminism or political correctness crap can change common sense and if thats the criteria the paper use to run there BUSINESS ( not equal rights charity ) then so be it.

“Also, if you are going to cast aspersions about the mental state of other posters, I would politely suggest more commas and less exclamation marks, lest you make yourself look foolish”

WHAT happened to equal rights? Just because I write differently does not mean you can view me differently no matter how many exclamation marks I use!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This stinks of discrimination!
