The American Foundation for AIDS Research published a new issue briefing in 2007, which fully deserves to be widely circulated.
It assesses the effectiveness of abstinence-only sex education programmes for HIV prevention amongst young people.
The briefing pulls together the evidence from a wide range of published studies covering the outcomes of abstinence-only programmes in both the US and internationally and arrives at an unsurprising but damning conclusion:

The Daily Mail ran this appalling story (safe link) today on its website…

The disgusting attempt to blame teachers was also followed up in the Daily Telegraph later.
But the Mail’s attempt backfired when even its website readers heavily criticised the paper for the story.
The top rated comments on the article were:

Rest in peace, Sophie Howard.

Update:
The Daily Mail have now changed their headline to: ‘Girl, 13, crushed to death by a falling branch as she sat on park bench on the day her teachers went out on strike‘.
It seems the story was distributed by local press agency News Team International, and is now carried by other outlets including the BBC and Daily Mirror.
But it may not have come with that inflammatory headline.
Sophie’s parents themselves spoke to local media and said:
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends and family for their support at this difficult time. Sophie has a twin brother who is also suffering greatly.
Our beloved daughter’s death was a tragic incident, which occurred only 24 hours ago, and we do not want it to be connected to any other events.
The Daily Mail ignored any statements by the parents.

Yesterday at 6PM Eastern Time, a turbulent two and a half years ended with the last appearance by the increasingly wayward Glenn Beck on Fox News Channel.
Beck managed to mention some of his favourite people – God, Jon Stewart and Hitler – before quietly walking off the set. He also made numerous references to his new web based offering.

“Public sector workers who have been made redundant should work unpaid as volunteer managers for charities, according to Francis Maude, the Minister for the Cabinet Office.
Speaking at a session hosted by Christian charity Oasis in London on Wednesday evening, Maude said many charities had plenty of potential volunteers but were unable to involve all of them because there was a shortage of volunteer managers.
“There will be a diminishing public sector workforce,” he said. “I want to help train some of these people to be organisers and managers of volunteers. There is nothing more frustrating than seeing charities with too many volunteers they can’t use because there is no one to manage them.”
Maude did not say whether the government would fund any training, but said the suggested roles would be unpaid.”
Last August, Francis Maude was asked about what voluntary work he does. He replied, “that is a very unfair question”. It is not known if Mr Maude or any of his colleagues have offered to lead by example, quit their jobs and work as volunteer managers without pay.

It seems like a good time to debunk some public service pension myths.
Myth 1: Public service pensions are gold-plated
Half of public sector pensions in payment are less than £5,600 a year. In local government half of pensioners get less than £3,000.
