Compare Phillips now to her writing after 7/7

You may have noticed that Melanie Phillips wrote a reply to my news piece earlier about how she was mentioned and quoted by the Oslo terrorist Breivik.

Phillips took time to go through Liberal Conspiracy to dredge up other times we had mentioned her, but didn’t even bother reading the front-page. She isn’t the only one I mentioned from the manifesto of course – we also pointed that the English Defence League was admired by him in internet postings.

I also pointed out that the manifesto frequently links to and mentions people such as Robert Spencer, another person that Phillips has quoted approvingly in the past. On Twitter I have pointed out links to several other groups such as the Hindu far-right in India.

Anyway. Yesterday, Melanie Phillips wrote on her blog:

After all, we don’t even know yet whether Breivik acted alone. We don’t know whether this ‘manifesto’ was indeed written by him or indeed what it is: as Mark Steyn observes here, it reads like as weird kind of cut-and-paste job. If it is indeed the work of a psychopath, it doesn’t bear examination for a single minute.

And yet the words of a deranged individual are being cited by people like Hundal who are taking them entirely seriously. Since when did people ever use the ravings of a madman in public debate?

Odd. Melanie Phillips wasn’t so afraid to ask questions and link the actions of a few ‘madmen’ (a term offensive to some) to Muslims straight after the terrorist attacks of 7/7.

Here is what she said then: (h-t Chris Brooke):

Above all, this poses the most urgent questions about the Muslim community from which this monstrous act has sprung. It is absolutely essential that we all find the answer to such questions if we are to have any hope at all of preventing further such atrocities.
…
In doing so, it has been taking its cue from the Muslim community itself which seems to be in the deepest denial. Yes, it has certainly condemned the atrocity in the strongest terms. But in the very next breath, its leaders have effectively washed their hands of it by repeating like a mantra that anyone claiming to be a Muslim who commits such an act is not a proper Muslim, because Islam is a religion of peace.

She also wasn’t averse to using that tragedy to attack the left broadly:

These lies emanating from extremists in the Muslim world have been further inflated by support from those in the wider community in Britain – mainly on the left – whose obsessive repetition of such falsehoods and disproportionate attention to the misdeeds of the west while ignoring Muslim atrocities have helped turn grievance into hysteria.

Breivik didn’t act alone – he had plenty of people agreeing with him on what the problem was and who was causing it.

If he’d of screamed God is great or something similar, and justified his actions with numerous Bible quotes then I think we could safely call him a Christian terrorist.

Further, if millions of Christians worldwide called professed themselves to be Breivik fans then we could conclude we had a persistent and pernicious problem on our hands with Christian terrorism.

As it stands neither is the case, thank god.

Though, I think the new far-right does pose a danger, and I do not believe this is a one-off.

The old far-right are, well, old, (and what were they angry at? Black faces and Jewish locks???) and the new far-right have things they can get very angry about (terror attacks, hate preachers), and they’re quite young, like this killer. Young, raging and not a bit psycho. Not a good combo.

According to Wiki – Mohammad Sidique Khan (the so called leader of the London tube bombers) is alleged to have “travelled regularly to Pakistan and Afghanistan to attend military training camps. In 2001 Khan was alleged to have learned bomb-making at the Malakand training camp in Pakistan. He is also alleged to have trained with Indonesian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah and to be directly involved with the 2002 Bali bombing” – in other words Khan was able to exploit an infra-structure set up for the express purpose of exporting acts of international terror.

So in what way was it “odd” that Melanie Phillips (or anybody else for that matter) wasn’t so afraid to ask questions and link the actions of a few ‘madmen’ to Muslims straight after the terrorist attacks of 7/7 – maybe if Khan had not developed the techniques learnt during his crash course in terrorism he may not have been able to recruit his much younger 3 accomplices, including 18yr old Hasib Hussain, who had barely left school.

Breivik’s lawyer today referred to his client as ‘insane’, a legal tactic perhaps, but as far as we know Breivik never attended comparable right wing camps set up with the express intent of inflicting as much terror and carnage as possible.

At least Jeremy Clarkson seems to be off the hook at the moment?

It doesn’t make any difference whether he shouted God is great while he did (although for all we know he could have done. His actions stem from his belief that his religion and his race is better than another (in this case Islam) and they are a danger to his religion, race culture and being. This is the exactly the same as Al-Qaeda and Muslim extremists. They both share the same narrative, that conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims is inevitable.

Also your second point I have to say is just ignorance, there aren’t millions of Muslims worldwide who professed to be OBL or Al-Qaeda fans. I don’t know where you got this idea from but it’s demonstrably false.

I think it is very odd. The allegations in the wiki article are just that, allegations, and came out several months if not years (one of the ones you quote is from 2007) after the attacks so they had no bearing on what Phillips said about her linkings straight afterwards.

And frankly, it is still odd, despite knowing what we do now about camps, that however much the vast majority of Muslims condemn the atrocities and are themselves victims of them, they are still “linked”.

Should McVeigh, who did hang around with an armed militia and attend weapon camps, be linked to Christians or US patriots or even the other militia groups (even the unsavory ones) that existed and condemned the attack at the time? Of course not.

Most probably true but were only a few days after the event and it will take years for everything to come out. There are already more than rumours that he was in contact with other far-rightists including taking to them about illegal activities, violence, provocations. And it hasn’t been unknown in the history of the far-right for them to have weapons training, camps, volkish get togethers.

Personally I don’t hold her responsible, nor even Clarkson, but then i am not going to shed tears when people use a massacre to score some political points, because she’s been doing it for years.

I think if you’re supporting your actions by showing that Melanie Phillips has taken similar ones, then perhaps you should consider that what you are doing is wrong. Phillips is inconsistent in saying that Breivik was an lone idiot where Muslim terrorists aren’t, but left wing bloggers have often been guilty of the same thing in the last few days. Just because she’s done it, doesn’t mean that you can. In fact it probably means that you shouldn’t.

Sunny, you’re making a pretty distasteful and pathethic attack on Mel Phillips. It’s also pretty hypocritical.

You’re simply proving her right when she says

by trying to tar everyone on the right, her especially, with the acts of one lone extremist. You acucse her and a plethora of other right wing bloggers, if not the whole riht wing sphere of having some kind of responsibilty for Breivik’s act.

Yet when it comes to Muslim extremists you then turn the argument around and say it’s only a handful of them, and the rest of the religion is peaceful etc.

Has to be said, from reading your work and Melanie Phillip’s, hers whilst clearly opinionated and unpleasant to some at least she mkes arguments. You just make pretty unpleasant personal attacks and I tihnk that says it all about you.

[8] OK, I accept that the term muslim is far too imprecise when applied to specific events like the attacks on London and New York.

Nonetheless these attacks were driven by elements from the muslim world who defined their political objectives, and in fact their entire existence by a distorted view of Islamic faith – in Mel’s word the word muslim became a kind of short hand for these extremists, and that is at the very least a lazy, or even dangerous way to frame any argument.

I forgot to say that it is quite obvious you are trying to piggy-back into the limelight by constantly digging at Melanie Phillips all the time.

I suspect you have a quiet admiration for her (especially for the number of people who are familiar with her).

Perhaps in 20 years time you will also have drifted from the left towards a conservative outlook on events.

Of course Mad mel is not to blame for the carnage, although it has been fun watching the many rightist posters get their knickers in a twist, she has every right to say what she wants but she did critisize non violent commentators for supporting palestinians and multiculturism. In her view this created the environment for the bombings in 7/7.

We used to have arguments about how unfair it was that Al Qaeda were described as Islamic terrorists, while the IRA weren’t described as Catholic terrorists. And the reasoning is basically the same here: the cause that drives Al Qaeda is a political view of Islam. The cause that drove the IRA was a united Ireland – not their fanatical devotion to the pope.

But at least that was comparing two terrorist organisations. Here you are trying to parse the actions of someone who cited John Stuart Mill and Gandhi as an inspiration for murdering children. You’re looking for meaning where there simply isn’t any. Was the Unabomber a Christian terrorist? On your definition certainly (hell, large chunks of Breivik’s ramblings are cut and pasted directly from the Unabomber’s ‘manifesto’). Is that a helpful or a useful way of analysing the Unabomber?
