Daily Mail planning a NotW clone say sources
Last night Reuters reported rumours that owners of the Daily Mail are mulling over a plan to fill the gap left behind by the News of the World.
The source said the newspaper group’s Associated Newspapers national titles division would do an internal dummy run this weekend and would launch the following weekend if it was a success.
…
Names under consideration for the new Sunday title are The Sunday and The Sunday Lite, the source said, adding that ex-Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie had been mooted as a columnist.
Meanwhile, rumours are also abound that News International are going to launch their own replacement for NotW within a month.
If both Sunday papers go head-to-head for the same space, it’s likely both would lose a lot of money. You won’t hear me complaining about that.

So the newspaper that the Information Commissioner has as the worst offender in its abuse of RIPA and Data Protection plans to fill the gap left by NOTW? Hardly progress, but it ain’t over yet.
Let’s hope the bastards bankrupt each other.
Could be interesting – logically, we should get a ‘better’ paper out of it if there is competition, although better would be more in tune with what potential purchasers want rather than more in tune with what Sunny or me might consider better…
Key thing is, however you look at this, you cannot deny competition would be good for the country as a whole – it is likely that there would develop seperate editorial lines for instance (even if both might be right-wing – there is still a lot of space on the right-wing without editorial support).
Someone was always going to fill that vacuum.

Possible, but likely? That’s a big profitable market that’s just been opened up…
Daily Maill going to do a NoTW clone? Terrifying stuff. I get the feeling we might all want NoW back once this thing arrives. It worries me, to be honest. Current perception is that we’ve finally rooted out the corruption in our press and wont be fooled again. It seems that Murdoch has been taken to the cleaners over specifics and symptoms of our corrupt press culture, which doesn’t address the underlying issue. While there is a demand for this kind of lurid journalism this culture will persist. It is easy to imagine the same people who were outraged by NoW scandal buying a NoW clone without even casting a thought as to how the stories are written. This could be all too easily written off as a specific fault of NoW, allowing people to forget that it is a neccessary underlier of a culture that they are implicit in sustaining.
If they launch soon and if the hacking, bribing police and other scandals expands to other news groups then they’re going to lose a lot. Here’s hoping.
