David Cameron’s astonishing attack on GPs
On any normal news day, Cameron’s astonishingly cynical and ignorant attack on GPs would surely be headline news. Here it is, from his Privatise Everything White Paper speech earlier this week:
People with money can get friendly with their local GP at a dinner party, maybe see them out of hours if there’s an emergency. In this world of restricted choice and freedom it’s the poorest who lose out.
First, there’s the idea that people seek out a GP when they have an “emergency”. What world is Cameron living in?
The idea of the 19th century personal physician, always at the beck and call of the elite, springs to mind.
More seriously, Cameron here comes close to accusing GPs of outright corruption, and he certainly suggests that many of them are not following the duty of a doctor set out by the General Medical Council to:
Never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues.
Cameron’s view that a standard GP is part of a ‘dinner paty’ clique is more a reflection of his upper-class background than it is of any kind of reality.
The reality is that the dinner party circuit as envisaged by Cameron is a phenomenon really quite specific to the ‘networking’ ruling class that Cameron inhabits; in most towns and cities up and down the country, it simply doesn’t exist.
If there is one statement from the last year that sums up Cameron’s lack of experience of the real world, a lack of experience which makes him fundamentally unfit to govern Britain, then this is surely it.
I’ll leave the last word to a very angry GP on the Pulse Today comments board (grammar and spelling slightly tidied):
Mr Cameron is obviously delusional considering his sense of reality – time to stop sniffing the solvents, Mr PM. His public school boy background obviously afforded him such great insight into social dynamics! He thinks he knows more about the average GP’s social calendar than we do.
What a twat! Since when do most GPs attend dinner parties with their patients in attendance? Utter bollocks. He’s just slinging mud at GP’s to deflect the shit storm facing him in the wake of his relationship with corrupt press officers and ahead of the BMA’s action on pensions.
Indeed.

David Cameron is starting to look really delirius and deluded these days. We have a Tory led Governmnt that is full of Tax Evaders/Avoiders and willing to give people that are implicated in crime (Andy Culson) a top job in Government: Head of Communications. Can it get any worse ?
Cameron and Company are out of touch and out of control and in my personal opinion corrupt.
Little Lord Faultybrain’s at it again. Nothing makes a dinner party a success like having the man who stares at your hemmorhoids as a guest. And don’t forget to invite the wife’s gynaecologist.
“I say, Cameron, old bean. Pass the tartar sauce. Hmm, looks like that discharge I removed from your dear wifes’ nether regions last year.” “Yes, quite. By the way doctor, I have this continual pain in my backside, could you take a look?” “Certainly, hop up on the table. Oh, I say. You seem to have a severe case of ‘CEREBRAL FEACAL DISRUPTION’. Quite simply, you have shit for brains.”
If there is one group of people who thoroughly deserve a kicking it is the GPs. This selfish clique with their all powerful union, masquerading as an advisory body, let us not forget, opposed the NHS bitterly and had to have their mouths stuffed with gold just when the rest of the country was recovering painfully from fighting the Nazi .Churchill had, as he promised broken the country to save it but sod that said GPs just give us the money .Parasites.
The deal New Labour handed Doctors turned them from middling sorts connected with the community to some of the richest people in any town and a sense of arrogant entitlement was not far behind . Of the 20,000 people earning over £117,000 pa in the Public sector ( top 1%) the vast majority are GPs which , incidentally, has warped the recent discussion of who gets paid most. In addition to this they have effectively opposed reform that they know better than anyone is vital by the threat of removing the service we pay for through the nose from their training through their privileged lives.
You young Cotterrill know nothing about life and have not noticed the changed relationship between Doctor and patient, you are so desperate to whip up some class envy against Cameron you cannot agree with him when he is speaking out for the disadvantaged
I start to wonder if there is anything that cannot be forgiven by the left provided it include taking money form working people and throwing at “Public Sector Professionals”.
Politicians, journos, Lawyers, Estate agents, builders, teachers …all of them get non stop pies on the face. The Doctors deserve far worse and yet they glide by un-touched.Fat selfish bastard Doctors they seem to bring out the inner creep , stop fawning Cotterill you are like a swooning nurse in a crap Hospital drama
Cameron’s cynicism is, apparently, boundless.
But, in speaking the language of the Left, and putting on a big show of wishing to change things for the (alleged) benefit of the poorest, he concedes an awful lot of moral territory.
@ blackwillow1
“You seem to have a severe case of ‘CEREBRAL FEACAL DISRUPTION’
Genius.
@5: Glad you liked it. I wonder, is the only known cure a ‘electoral enema’?
Ha! The idea that the masses are all attending dinner parties every other day…
Also I read a while back that Doctors are one of the most likely category of people who would NOT reveal their profession at a party. Doing so would only invite the “oh, perhaps you could take a quick look at …” type of response that they would be understandably desperate to avoid outside of the surgery.
Oh, and IT people were the other main category… “Oh, perhaps you could help me with my PC…”.
Can I remind everyone who it is that Lansley wants to be driving through his NHS reforms? Oh yes, GPs!
So first Cameron insults NHS managers, then he insults GPs. Why doesn’t he just say: these NHS reforms are just a fucking mess and we are incompetent at doing anything
@ 5:
““You seem to have a severe case of ‘CEREBRAL FEACAL DISRUPTION’
Genius.”
Of course, it would be even more clever if blackwillow1 knew how to spell “faecal” properly…
@9: Yes. I know, did’nt notice the error until it was too late, my own fault for watching the news and typing at the same time. Going slightly off topic, Tom Crone, top legal bod at NI has resigned. Jumping before he’s pushed, maybe?
Erm, surely the point here was that rich people (who do, stereotypically attend dinner parties – ask Messrs Cameron and Milliband about that…) attend dinner parties, and that they are likely to encounter some doctors there.
And they can receive privileged access through this (it probably wouldn’t be counted as discrimination, because it is effectively in the doctors’ own time).
So even if this only occurs in the élite metropolitan circles of our party leaders, it still occurs, and surely you have to concur it is wrong.
Incidentally, where is the bit that says all GPs were covered by this anyway?
In effect, we have a left-wing commentator protecting the rights of some (generally better-off) GPs to offer services to those they meet in their rariefied social circles at the expense of everyone else. And ironically, he is basing part of his criticism on the fact that Mr Cameron occupies these circles – so is in fact able to identify the problem!
Not the best bit of argument I’ve ever seen, unless you are redefining left-wing philosophy to include protecting the right of élites within professions.
Couldn’t for the life of me remember which sepia-tinted vision of provincial GP life Cameron must have had in mind when he made the comment, but I remember now it’s the 1980s Michael Palin film ‘A Private Function’ in which the GP is top dog in the local elite http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089838/usercomments
A bit extreme, but I do think Cameron and his coterie have a habit of developing caricature images of how people live their lives and basing policy announcement around that. For example, the idea that people’s natural urge will be to get up and get out of their rancid council estate if they get a job is the basis of their proposed change of tenure policy, although the research evidence, not to mention common sense, points very strongly to most people regarding their council home first and foremost as a home, and that moving people on and out of their local neighbourhood because they get a job is a very odd way to go about local community cohesion.
“In this world of restricted choice and freedom it’s the poorest who lose out.”
Absolutely. The poor will be much better served under a privatised system, as we see in the US.
What amazes me is that Cameron is still presented as a competent leader when almost everything he has been associated with – from the ERM debacle to Coulson and the NHS has been an absolute disaster. He only gets away with it because of his background and urbane manner. His single triumph – scraping home with the votes of 25% of the electorate – was only achieved against the backdrop of an economic debacle caused by the deregulation he accused Brown of not pushing far enough!
Cameron’s policy initiatives are invariably disasters waiting to happen.
@12 Paul,
“For example, the idea that people’s natural urge will be to get up and get out of their rancid council estate if they get a job is the basis of their proposed change of tenure policy, although the research evidence, not to mention common sense, points very strongly to most people regarding their council home first and foremost as a home”
I can’t resist going off topic, but surely the the point is not that it is the natural urge of people to get out of their Council Estate if their circumstances improve, but that it is right for them to do so. If they no longer require subsidised housing then why should they ecieve it when there are plenty of more needy people on the waiting list? In fact surely the fact that people will be legally required to move suggests that the Tories understand that people want to stay in their low cost housing, hence the need to force them to move.
Back on topic I do think Cameron has got this one badly wrong – a really stupid statement to make.
“People with money can get friendly with their local GP at a dinner party, maybe see them out of hours if there’s an emergency. In this world of restricted choice and freedom it’s the poorest who lose out.”
How is this different than people with money getting to see the Prime Minister at Leaders parties… or has he forgotten about those?
Well, my impeccably left-leaning GP brother certainly takes informal professional calls outside the usual times and channels, and so by his account do many of his colleagues. I can’t comment on who exactly they are and how he knows them, but it’s mostly first names and I’m willing to wager that it isn’t a random cross section of the practice list.
There are 250 million GP consultations in the UK every year.
