Are Sun & Times also hurting from #hackgate?

by Sunny Hundal

Are the Sun and The Times also feeling the fallout of the NotW scandal?

It was all speculation last week but figures now show this anecdotal evidence may have more than a whiff of truth to it.

The Glamorous Left blog has captured several pictures of The Sun and the Times being left behind on newsstands.

Today, the Media Guardian reports that the final News of the World didn’t sell the 4.5m number that was being bandied about. The real figures is more near 3.8 million. Just 1 million more than normal.

More worryingly for News International, it adds:

The Sun is thought to have had possibly its worst weekend of the year, losing as many as 250,000 sales on Saturday, according to unofficial estimates.

Similarly the Times on Saturday and the Sunday Times are thought to have seen sales drop by about 30,000, according to unofficial figures

Other newspapers including the Sunday Telegraph, the Observer and the Mirror have apparently received a boost in sales in the meantime.

Interesting days ahead.

Apparently the Sun have pictures of Charlotte Church with her knickers round her knees, shortly after an alleged ‘knee trembler’ round the back of a club, so the public outcry over this type of ‘investigative reporting’ and intrusion into the private lives of people appears to be over.

If we’re going for anecdotal stories, one of my co-workers, who is usually quite keen to parrot tabloid stories about benefit cheats etc, has actually been moved to cancel his sky subscription over the affair. The rest of my ‘Jeremy Clarkson’ type workmates have also declared their disgust with the whole of NI and are giving thought to following suit. Maybe it’s just my workplace, but from what I can gather News International managed to trigger the ‘hate’ response that the Sun et al engenders, upon themselves. Petard, hoist upon one’s own, springs immediately to mind.

Or, to put it another way, just under ten times the sales of the Observer and Independent on Sunday combined.

“Or, to put it another way, just under ten times the sales of the Observer and Independent on Sunday combined.”

‘Cos that’s what it’s all about, eh Tim?

*facepalm*

4 – when talking about sales figures, the number of papers sold is reasonably relevant I’d have thought.

Tim J: Tesco has something like three times the Co-Op’s market share. Do you really think Philip Clarke would get away with telling the City “yes, we fell 16% short of our sales target, but we’re still three times the size of the Co-Op”?

6 – Oh quite. It’s simply that it’s a bit strange to say that they “only” sold 1 million extra copies, when that figure is itself more than three times the total circulation of the largest left-wing broadsheet Sunday paper, and not so very far off the total circulation of the second largest Sunday paper.

Oh I see your point now Tim – I wasn’t aware the original post was actually part of an ongoing game of Top Trumps.

By the way The Sun is 93 million miles away, whereas the Guardian is just down by Kings Cross station, so I win.

I’ve been keeping my eye out and it looks like tere are alot of unsold copies of the Sun at the moment.

It may have something to do with the fact they aren’t reporting the biggest news story of the day as well as short/long(?) term toxicity.

I’m hoping that those who were declaring the closure of the notw as a genius stroke by NI will be proved wrong.

@7 I expect the NotW will be selling considerably less copies than either of those other papers this coming Sunday though ;)

Just call it the Murdoch crime family.

The real pain that the Times will face will come from a lack of subsidies. Murdoch has been using the profits from the News of the World to support the Times for some time. If the tabloids go down in sales, the Times will come under pressure.

But it is good to see a consumer boycott actually work.

Goddamn, I actually agree with SMFS. *faints*

While I feel no sadness for the Murdoch empire, it has to be said that, regardless of the NOTW reputation for living in the gutter, a piece of media history has been dumped on the scrapheap. 168 years of populist journalism, cast aside for no better reason than to protect the worthless hide of a repugnant chartacter. If the rest of the NI stable are killed off as a result of all this, I wo’nt shed a tear for the loss, but it will seem very strange, not to have ‘the enemy’ on the scene. The Telegraph, Express and the Mail, they just do’nt inspire the same level of disgust, simply because Murdoch is the most high profile hate figure in the UK media. Strange times indeed.

in my papershop there was an unusually large pile of the sun left compared to the star, mirror ,express, mail etc. not proof of anything but first time i’ve seen that in a long time.
