Leaked audio! Rebekah Brooks faces angry NotW staff (extended)

Courtesy of someone at Sky News, I’ve now managed to get an extended version of the audio of Rebekah Brooks facing angry News of the World staff.

Highlights
- Staff accuse Rebekah Brooks “of calling our newspaper toxic”
- She is also accused of “making the whole News International toxic”
- Whatever she says ends up at the Guardian website, she claims
- “No one wanted to be in it” – she admits with regards to advertisers.
- She admits lots of advertisers were pulling out
- She says there is more to come and it will then be “another very difficult moment for this company”.
- Staff member says: “a lot of people think you should resign”.

Rebekah Brooks: …and I remember the team spirit of the paper where you all, who were there came alongside me and we fought for something we believed in, and I remember when we saw all the news headlines that came in the next day – we were rubbished everywhere and there was an opinion poll that said “ninety-seven percent of the British public agree with you”.

And we were like “right, here we are, we’re up and running”. And so I feel very strongly exactly the same as you, and that’s why I said “mounting anger”. And you know, I’m not saying- you know, this is not exactly the best time in my life, but I’m determined to get vindication for this paper. And for people like you.

Staff member: Will the paper come out again once you’ve got vindication for it? What I don’t understand is, can’t you see that by your actions yesterday, you’re calling our newspaper toxic, right? We’re all contaminated by that toxicity, by the way we’ve been treated. But can’t you see the bigger picture? You’re making the whole of News International toxic, and the arrogance there that you think we’re going to work here again.

Rebekah Brooks: You know what there’s not an arrogance about wanting you to work for us again at all and I’m sorry that came across. All I meant was that if any of you did want to, that I was going to try and find opportunities, but please believe me, there’s no arrogance coming from this standpoint. On your point about- you know, you said will the paper come out again? We have a belief in journalism, we have invested in journalism throughout our history, yes we’re in a very bad moment, but we will continue to invest in journalism. And we haven’t made a decision on any new publications, or existi- strengthening or expanding existing ones yet.

It’s too soon, we just don’t know what to do. But in those circumstances – I don’t see there’s any of you in this room here looking at me now – that we wouldn’t want to work because we know there’s no toxicity attached to you guys in the room and that’s the sadness. It wouldn’t be sad, we wouldn’t all be feeling like this if you guys were up to your neck in it like previous colleagues. We wouldn’t be feeling like this would we?

I’m sorry but I have no sympathy with the staff. They chose to work for a scumbag organisation that has shown over and over again that it represents the rich, and the powerful. So if they feel surprised that they got screwed over by the management elites then they must be a bit stupid.

Never heard such patronising crap from an employer since I was fired by Thomson Regional Newspapers in ’71 for being on strike. RB is a weasel & not even really a true journalist. Having said that – the NOTW lived by the sword and now dies by the sword. It’s a kind of poetic circle. If she’s having Rupert’s baby (as rumoured in hackland) the speculation in the Sunday Mirror will be: is it Murdoch or Grint!

RB on recording #2: “…advertisers are so willing to believe anything about the News of the World…”

NotW advertisers and readers wrongly tolerated conduct by NotW journalists because it was not proven. Misconduct is now proven, and the readers and advertisers walked away. RB needs to get a more solid grasp of reality.

It is remarkable that a newspaper with a feel for the instincts of its readers failed to understand a simple argument: if you preach, you have to have some saintly attributes. And decent excuses for moral failings. As Jack Lemmon said “Well, nobody’s perfect.”

“Rebekah Brooks said that the phone-hacking scandal would end with Guardian editor “Alan Rusbridger on his knees, begging for mercy”, according to Nick Davies in this week’s Media Talk podcast over at the Guardian. Davies continues: “They would have destroyed us. If they could have done, they would have shut down the Guardian.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Rusbridger talks about the resistence to covering the scandal from within Fleet Street. “I was told from time to time that this was not helpful for Fleet Street,” said Rusbridger. “The only thing that was going to damage Fleet Street was the failure to deal with this seriously. If the PCC had acted in 2009. . . then I think the News of the World would still be alive.”

It is delicious that they got caught fucking over the very people who believed in them. Like our “Brave boys, ” and the families of murdered children.

Yeah, well said. It’s pretty much the dark side of this whole event, in fact. Appalling behaviour is only considered appalling when it’s conducted against a worthwhile victim.

I still want to know where the public outrage was years ago, when NotW was caught selling fake picture of our troops abusing POWs. Because, y’know, that might have actually had an effect on existing human beings. Or when the paper was found to have actually abused our political system by spying on politicians. It’s good that we’ve finally stood up to their bullshit, but it seems a little late.

There was a lot of outrage. The editor, Piers Morgan, got sacked. Morgan was editor of the Daily Mirror.

Can’t help but agree with those saying this should’ve happened years ago, but face it, there’s always a turning point and this might just be it. Look at it this way, whatever’s gone before has led up to this situation, finally something big has broken and with a bit of follow through, other such inane, senseless, indignant and dumbed down publications might just suffer too. There’s a place for frivolous reading, but at the expense of people’s lives and livelihoods?? It’s time to raise the bar, and I’m not saying the top one can’t use a bit if that too, but I’ve never known the bottom one to be so low…
