The stench around the News of the World isn’t going away – in fact its only getting worse today.
Yesterday, thousands of people did amazing work by emailing companies and registering their disgust. You forced 17 companies to publicly distance themselves from the NotW. As momentum gathers pace – we need a targeted campaign on blogs, Twitter, Facebook and email focusing on the top spenders.
So here is the information:
The Guardian has compiled a list of the top 50 advertisers at the NotW over the last 6 months. The top 11 spenders (10 that we can influence, and BSkyB that won’t be influenced) are below.

Targetting the advertisers is pointless when what is needed is a campaign to change the overall nature of the tabloid press.
They will always be motivated by the desire to peddle hysteria, lies and misinformation to make profit rather than genuine journalism.

So you are happy to use the power of money to undermine the freedom of the press – as long as it’s the freedom of a newspaper you happen not to like.
Don’t you trust the public to make up their own minds about the horrible News of the World? Or do you just find it easier to send the odd email or tweet to Tesco executives rather than actually engage with ordinary people?
I thought you were meant to be liberals?
As deplorable as the activities of the NOTW (and any other newspaper who practices such stuff) is, how much of this campaign is about changing the behaviour of journalism, and how much is about a shameless chance to settle some long-held grudges against Murdoch and News International?
It is interesting to note the number of mobile phone providers in the list. It is worth emphasising in any communication with those providers the impact of their brand appearing in a newspaper associated with mass hacking of mobile phones.
I agree with the campaign but worry that the advertisers will simply move to other News International papers, meaning any damage is limited.
Be good if we are all writing formal letters to get the format right.

The freedom of the press does not, and should not, include the freedom to break the law with impunity. The News of the World built itself & readership (thus, advertising) on whipping up the mob and have only themselves to blame that so many people are angry & acting accordingly.

On the broader points raised here: yes, reform of the press/media in general is very important & for one thing the PCC needs to be dissolved/reformed and the Met needs its part in this saga looked at by Parliament (I think that’s happening with the public enquiry). But if the NotW goes under it would be a hell of a start and a decent warning shot to the other criminal redtops – their time is coming to an end.

@13. No, that’s good. I hope the NoTW gets slaughtered. I hadn’t even read Brendan O’Neill today when I wrote that last post, but I think there’s something in what he says.
It is today’s broader cultural thirst for scandal, for the exposure of some terrible deed or wrongdoing against which people might rally and define themselves, which has led to this latest episode of tabloid misconduct being treated, in the words of one reporter, as ‘a great evil’.
We all love a good scandal, and this is a scandal in the same way that the NoTW is always looking for them. I hope Brooks gets prosecuted though.

It looks like Tesco is still in and according to the Guardian:
“Tesco has said it will not pull advertising in the NOTW…..James Robinson has noticed that Andrew Higginson, Chief Executive of Retailing Services and Group Strategy Director at Tesco, also sits as a non-executive director on the BSkyB board.”
This makes it the only grocer to continue to advertise. Given that there is a Tesco on almost every single high street (I have three within strikking distance), maybe we should supplement emails with passing out home designed leaflets. Most of us will pass a Tesco fairly often.
I am producing one that fits 4 little leaflets on an A4 page and will pass them out as I pass by the various Tescos in my locality. The staff who work there do not deserve any hassle or grief, so I will take care not to put them in a difficult situation.
Here is my basic word content:
Tesco says ‘every little bit helps” but do you want to help out the News of the World?.
Shopping at Tesco does just that.
Tesco is the only grocer happy to continue to advertise in the News of the World. You are paying for that
Let them know how you feel.
Shop somewhere else.

Perhaps Sunny or someone could produce a file that people can download, print off and use.(happy to send my version) I think small-sized leaflets are easy to carry around and distribute, and work well in a situation like this.

The point is not simply that it’s illegal: it’s totally f***ing despicable. Do you seriously think the Guardian is likely to be phone-tapping kidnap victims?
Do you seriously think they’d campaign over multiple years to expose the News of the World’s conduct if they feared being exposed for something similar themselves?
Yes, I do find it implausible that *only* the News of the World ever did this, and not the other News International papers run by similar/same management. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to find some non-NI papers hauled into court on some sort of breach of privacy charges. But the Guardian? I don’t think so. News International, the police and the government will no doubt have been digging wildly and desperately for something – anything at all, however minor – to throw at the Guardian in recent months to use the “pot kettle black” line and defuse the scandal.
I am astounded by how many people think this is a freedom of the press issue.
The freedom of the press relates to freedom of expression. Being able to slag off the government or opposition, and being able to express offensive opinions. Being able to draw pictures of Mohammed and being able to, er, report illegal activity by massive corporate organisations.
It does not mean anyone who works for a newspaper is somehow exempt from the laws that bind any normal person. It’s not like NOTW published an offensive article or even some misleading facts or something… this is about who is and who isn’t above the law, laws that relate to serious things like murder.
And what is meant by saying “settling a score against Murdoch”? Yes I hate Murdoch, and don’t hate the Guardian. If the Guardian went about demonising every vulnerable person or group in the country as monsters whilst destroying criminal evidence and tapping the phones of murder and terror victims then I would take exactly the same response to them. The point is they don’t. NewsCorp does. They always have and that’s why people hate them. If there is a discrepancy between the way I and other members of the public treat News International and the Guardian, it is because there is a pretty big difference between those organisations!

If the Guardian behaved like the NOTW then the people who hate NOTW would hate the Guardian. But it doesn’t, so they don’t.

Hopefully this entire episode is the beginning of the end for the trashy tabloid press
Have emailed all companies listed. WH Smith first to reply and said:
“Thank you for your email expressing your concerns around our advertising in the News of the World. We are obviously concerned, like you, regarding recent allegations.
We are not big press advertisers and have not advertised in the News of the World recently nor indeed do we have any planned advertising coming up.”
