The campaign for an advertiser boycott of NotW: how you can help

Updated at 5:15pm – Expanded list of 17 companies below. We’re now focusing on top ten advertisers

On Monday afternoon we heard the News of the World had hacked into Milly Dowler’s phone. Yesterday, Channel 4 revealed the tabloid had spied on a senior police officer as he was investigating suspects with links to the NotW.

Today, its reported the police believe that bereaved relatives of 7/7 had their phones hacked. The police are also investigating claims that parents of the Soham girls also had their phone hacked.

Enough is enough. Boycotting the paper itself is unlikely to have much impact as most of you probably don’t buy it anyway. Instead we have to target advertisers. This is where we need your help.

Today, as a campaign for a public inquiry kick-starts, we are launching a joint campaign across blogs and Facebook (a dedicated website is also coming) to target NotW advertisers.

Here’s how it can work
Companies are listed below.
1) Contact as many as you can and politely but firmly express your disapproval. Model emails at the end. And an email page is here

2) Tweet at them if you can.

3) Let us know what they said below in the comments or through the contact us page.

We (bloggers, journalists) will then call them to ask if they plan to carry on supporting the NotW with their advertising. Hopefully, public pressure and growing momentum will force many more to reconsider.

Names of top advertisers who haven’t pulled their advertising by the afternoon will also be read out in Parliament! More on this later.

MODEL EMAIL

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am a regular customer of [INSERT COMPANY NAME] and writing to express my displeasure that you still advertise with the News of the World tabloid.

It has been reported that the NotW has been caught repeatedly hacking into phone voicemails, including that of the murdered girl Milly Dowler.

Such behaviour is disgusting and unacceptable and I’m appalled that you continue to associate with them.

I hope you will consider pulling your advertising from the News of the World, or I shall consider boycotting your company too.

Yours sincerely
[YOUR NAME]

Please amend that as much as you like. If everyone sent the same letter they might get suspicious.

If you want to add more information or make suggestions or report back on what you’ve heard from advertisers, please leave a comment below.

FINALLY – spread the word! Tweet these details (which will be updated throughout the day) and post it to your Facebook wall!

Awesome work Sunny!

NOTW will be toast by sunday :-D

We might all love the co-op, I certainly do but they can NOT be left out of the list.

3. Liam Murray

Worth pointing out this is a ‘long game’ – all the supposed ‘outs’ at the moment are saying they won’t advertise *this week* or have none planned. If NOTW are smart they could pull ALL advertising for a couple of weeks anyway (the pockets are deep enough) and let the heat on this dissipate, perhaps even to let Brooks go at some point. Then the business model quietly builds up again and all the companies we’re lauding for taking a stand today will be back in the pages of NOTW come August.

Just a thought that this needs framing for the longer term – something like “we trust company X wish to disassociate themselves from these behaviours on a permanent basis and won’t place advertising with News International again”.

4. tokyo nambu

It’s worth noting that Co-Op have explicitly said they will _not_ withdraw their advertising. They are the only company to do this. Their hands should be held to the fire for this: they are saying that it would be “irresponsible” for them to act prior to the outcomes of inquiries being known. They don’t have to justify their advertising being pulled, as customers they can just do it. Presumably the business they get via the NotW is worth the opprobrium.

Put the Coop on the list please (as PS has). Their association with this rag is very depressing.

6. George Ryan

Hi Sunny. I don’t know if you’ve seen the Daily Mail website but they are not giving the story proper coverage. Either they are scared what’s going to happen to the tabloids or they’ve been at it too. I think the latter is probably true. Is anyone investigating this?

Yes, seriously, the Co-Op are the only org actively saying they will *continue* advertising with NOTW, which is astonishing as (a) they’re ‘ethical’ and (b) they’re owned by their members, 99% of whom, one imagines, are repulsed by the NOTW’s behaviour. Please ensure they’re added to your list.

You can use my automatic e-mails too, here:
http://notwadboycott.posterous.com/
My page features a link to Dawn Foster’s suggested message for Co-Op members too. Well worth doing.

Regarding the Co-Op, this is the one that irks me most given that they trade on, and I use them because of, their ethical stance. Contacts below.

CEO: peter.marks@co-operative.coop
Head of PR: phil.edwards@co-operative.coop
Head of customer services: anita.young@co-operative.coop

9. Carol McGuigan

just called Morrissons’ PR guy – who won’t be pulling their ads until the ‘allegations’ are proved true. Expressed my disgust but he was mealy mouthed. Put the point to him that M’s don’t need ads in NOW, that they are v. successful supermarket but he wouldn’t budge.

I called M’s because I am very regular customer and I have emailed the CEO and PR person at C0-op because I bank with them – ditteo Orange as I have broadband and mobile with them. I will share their response when/if they give it.

Good luck

10. Paul Newman

One thing I notice is that any idea that having women in top jobs would improve the world is looking a bit threadbare. We have had the nauseating spectacle of Sharon ShoeSmith continuing to leech off the tax payer even with a dead baby on her non existent conscience and now Rebekah Brooks trying to pontificate her way out of repsonisblity for some of the most disgusting behaviour I can recall.

11. ultrabear

Great site.
It really is up to the public now. Hopefully, we will boycott, protest or do whatever to get our message across. I have mailed co-op and will be closing my bank account unless they change their minds!
I wonder how many other such mails it would take for them to change their mind
d

Hi I sent a mail to Brand Alley who are a NOTW advertiser asking if they would suspend their advertising under the current circumstances. Here is their reply back to me.

Hi Jl,
BrandAlley UK commented on their Wall post.
BrandAlley UK wrote “Hi Jl BrandAlley has no plans to review their advertising placement and are not in a position to comment over these upsetting allegations. We will follow the investigation as it unfolds; no decisions will be made until police investigations are concluded. News International has instigated a full investigation into allegations towards a freelancer who once worked for News of the World. We have been assured that they will take appropriate strong action if any truth is found in these allegations.”

Looks like this firm should be the first to be naled and shamed as they seem not to care at all about this disgusting news coming from TNOTW.

Sunny,

Surely we should be calling for a boycott of advertising with news international? If they merely move from the NOTW to the SUN will it bother them?!

Joe

Hi — this is what I wrote. Hope it maybe helps someone pen something.

“I’ve been with Virgin for years. All our family mobile phones are with you (x 4). All our TV, our landline, broadband…

We’ve never used Sky because frankly I find the Murdoch empire thing quite revolting.

And my repugnance over the activities at the NoW is beyond anything I have felt reported about the media for a long time.

I am sure that you and your colleagues feel the same way.

Personal feelings are one thing. And it could be argued that corporate decisions shouldn’t be made on the back of such visceral responses.

Clearly the NoW folk decided that a sense of morality shouldn’t get in the way of getting information they could print/publish to increase their sales.

I though think you lot are better than that and should as a large influential organisation echo the feelings and sense of horror felt by so many at the tactics deployed by the NoW by withdrawing your advertising from the NoW and from other Murdoch media outlets.

Please let me know how Virgin decides to proceed on this matter.”

15. Lauretta Pearson

I have sent emails to Three and Boots. I am not a customer of any of the others sorry.

Well done on doing this!! Excellent!

Kind regards

Lauretta

Tony Blair will not be happy with your attacks on his besty friend.

Hi,

this is great, I wondered if you could provide the names of people at Tesco, Sainsbury etc so we could write to them to illustrate why it is no longer appropriate to stock News of the World. For big family chains to be associated with a paper that has targeted ordinary people suffering from loss and heartache is surely bad for business?

You can see the first lot of twitter reactions given to my Dad when he tweeted all companies concerned on the first image here http://thoughcowardsflinch.com/2011/07/06/what-is-the-future-for-rebekah-brooks/

Incidentally if you haven’t seen this already – http://www.pint.org.uk/notw.html – use it, it makes everything very easy.

Lastly Bulmer are tweeting this back:

@bulmerscider
Hi guys, in response to your questions, #Bulmers hasn’t advertised with #NOTW.

Just a heads up!

19. vikky bennett

@ANDY: Sainsburys CEO is called Justin King.
Here is a useful link to their investors email address’s, stockholders enquiry lines etc: http://www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/index.asp?pageid=196

I am writing to all those companies with whom I regularly do business. I will post the compositions and responses(if any) later.

If you are a member write to membership@co-operative.co.uk.

Re the “long game” I am asking these businesses to commit to withhold advertising until the completion of investigations and trials. I am willing to keep reminding them that they are associating themselves with a law-breaking organisation. .

I am emphasising that while the recent revelations (no longer allegations since the NoWT has acknowledged both that Milly Dowler’s phone was hacked and that payments to police were made) are utterly repugnant and show a vicious attitude towads the most vulnerable, NOTW had already admitted law-breaking in its settlements with public figures.

Any business that still considers it appropriate to associate itself with and sustain an unethical, morally depraved and law-breaking organisation does not merit my business. Businesses that are so sanguine about NoTW’s cavalier attitudes to privacy no longer have my confidence: all their privacy and corporate responsibility statements are rendered meaningless by their continued advertising.

I am also calling for withholding advertising from any News International media outlets, unless and until it complies with basic standards of corporate responsibility, and removes (suspends or sacks) all those executives who held positions of authority while this law-breaking and vicious intrusion into the lives of the grief-stricken occurred.

21. Henry Crun

Will you be running the same campaign if Guardian, Observer and Daily Mirror journalists are also found to have hacked phones?

Just wondering…

Anyone can contact Co-Op at this address.

customer.relations@co-op.co.uk

Very disappointed with the Co-op. Have had ‘get-back-to-you’ standard replies from Asda, npower, Associated Newspapers, Halfords, Boots, Sainsburys, Carphone Warehouse and WH Smith.
No reply from Morrissons, Virgin Media, Proctor & Gamble, Tesco, Dixons, Superdrug and EasyJet.

I have written a version of this to all the e-mail addresses given. Good luck with your campaign:

To Whom It May Concern:
As a regular Debenhams customer I like many others feel that I shall not be able to shop with you so long as you continue to justify the actions of The News Of The World by advertising with them. I strongly recommend that you withdraw your advertising until a full independent enquiry has taken place, and all those involved have taken responsibility for their actions.

Yours sincerely
Ian Baldry

Good work Sunny. But do we need a more consistent approach on the whole News International family? Its no good telling NotW advertisers to drop out and not place ads in any of the sister papers if their competitors continue to advertise in the Sun, Times, etc. Names and contact details of all the top New International advertisers please!

@21 From what I can gather there’s a very good chance we may well need to just boycott newspapers in general. With only the odd low-circulation newspaper perhaps not having it’s hands firmly in the dark arts.

27. douglas clark

You should be advocating the confiscation of all Rupert Murdochs assets, those of his children and his childrens children, their arrest and imprisonment along with their lackeys and lickspittles and the pursuit of damages for evermore, followed by their banishment from our shores.

Apart from that, carry on….

@23

VERY GOOD NEWS after lobbying by co-op MP Meg Hiller they have withdrawn advertising

Email correspondence with Tescos FWIW

Sir,

Thank you for your reply. I feel this reply does indicate an abdication of any corporate standards on your behalf and a deliberate attempt to kick the matter into the long grass.

As such, until you make some sort of stand or gesture I will be voting with my wallet and urging my friends and family to do likewise. I understand that the Co-Op has decided to suspend their advertising so they will be getting my business for the foreseeable future. My shopping and that of people I know may not be much but as they say, every little helps.

advertising

Sir,
I would suggest that you review your advertising campaigns
this morning and cancel any that will be using the News of the World. Otherwise,
I shall have no hesitation in boycotting the shops and services provided by the
group with immediate effect and asking my friends, family and colleagues to do
the same.

I look forward to an announcement by the close of business

——
Dear Alicia,

Thank you for your email expressing your concerns about the availability of the News of the World in our stores. We are obviously concerned, like you, regarding recent allegations

We continually review our ranges to make sure they meet our customer’s expectations. We try not to act as a censor but believe that our customers should choose the products they buy.

We try our best to make sure all the products we sell are ones that customers want to buy and we constantly review customer demand and feedback to ensure this happens. We will continue to review the situation closely.

Well done to Libcon and others for their campaigning.

Just pointing out though, Cooperative is listed twice in the new list (2.15PM), no.5 and no.13

A biti pompous to be sure, but makes points about long-standing issues and also calls for action beyond this weekend and NotW

Dear T mobile

I am – as your records will show – a very long-standing customer. However, I am now urgently considering alternatives.

Your continued financial support for the News of the World (and other News International media outlets) is reprehensible to me.

Any respectable business – and especially one who depends on customer confidence that safeguarding privacy is a priority – would have been very alarmed at the existing evidence (from its settlement of civil suits) of the law-breaking activities of the News of the World.

The most recent and unfolding revelations (no longer allegations since the NotW has acknowledged them) regarding vicious intrusions into the private lives of grief-stricken victims manifest a moral depravity that is intolerable. The revelations re payments to the police amplify a message that News of the World has contempt for the rule of law in a democratic society.

I ask that you withdraw your advertising from News of the World until the completion of investigations and any trials of members of the organisation.

I also ask that you withdraw all advertising in all News International outlets until and unless they assume the basic requirements of corporate responsibility and suspend (or sack) all those in positions of authority when these actions were undertaken.

For you to maintain credibility about your commitments to privacy, the rule of law and corporate responsibility I think the withdrawal of financial support to News International is necessary and urgent.

Natwest is on the list twice (number 5 and number 11).

Ah, fixed now I see. :)

Dear Sir/Madam,
You know, I know, EVERYBODY knows that your continuing association with the media interests of Rupert Murdoch, be they newspaper ads, T.V. ads, or carrying the products in your stores is a very bad idea. Big household names such as yours, are not only seen to be condoning the actions of News International, but by association, you link yourselves to the political figures involved in this matter. Jeremy Hunt, responsible for deciding to allow Mr. Murdoch to take over the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, a deal that is looking increasingly questionable, David Cameron, PM, known to have a socially intimate relationship with a number of people involved in the investigation, add to that the police officers who now stand accused/suspected of taking bribes and you have possibly the ‘perfect storm’ in the world of publicity and public opinion. I wo’nt try to appeal to your sense of decency, there are many more contacting you in that frame of mind. I appeal directly to you as people who are in the job to make a profit, that’s what you do, what you’re good at. You know that public opinion is your greatest asset, those who are in tune with it, will profit from it. Those who ignore it, will be counting the cost, both financially and in the minds of the public, whose influence far outweighs that of the corporate world, when the public are all moving in the same direction, with their money.

38. Co-op update

Co-operative Group suspends News of the World advertising

July 06, 2011

The Co-operative Group has taken the decision to suspend temporarily any further advertising and promotional activity with the News of the World until the outcome of the investigation is known.

The Group is a consumer-owned business which adheres to strong ethical standards. These allegations have been met with revulsion by the vast majority of members who have contacted us.

We would urge everyone involved to bring this matter to a speedy conclusion for the sake of all those who are affected by these events.

Does this site have contact details – can’t see on target lists at top of page.

RE Jasmine at 40: Paul Newman at 10 made a valid point. We are constantly bombarded with articles about the ‘glass ceiling’ and the lack of women on executive boards. The case of Wade is proof that the mere presence of a woman in a top position is no guarantee of progress.

I support the idea of equality for women on the basis that it is part of the general struggle for social progress. It is hardly a sign of progress that a rag like the NotW has been overseen by a woman rather than a man.

I would have thought that the awful example of Thatcher — 30 years back — would have made this clear.

Here’s another template if anyone needs one (though please check for typos.):
Dear,

I apologise in advance for taking up some of your valuable time, but I feel that I cannot take a disinterested position any longer.

The shocking allegations in the News of the World is deeply upsetting. The thought that the phones of 7/7 victims and the phones of children who suffered unimaginable horrors were hacked in the interest of selling newspapers is an unspeakable act of depravity. It is also depraved that Newscorp, in it’s own self-interest, has misled parliament and the public and therefore customers such as yourselves. Your money, the money you paid as a company, has been used for illegal acts.

I use (…) on a regular basis. I will no longer use your services if I feel that you value advertising over basic human values.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts in an open and thoughtful way that reflects your presence in our communities.

Best wishes,

@ 42 Dr Paul

“We are constantly bombarded with articles about the ‘glass ceiling’ and the lack of women on executive boards. The case of Wade is proof that the mere presence of a woman in a top position is no guarantee of progress.”

Um, the presence of women in top positions is proof of progress against the glass ceiling.

You seem to be mixing up two things: the idea that we should encourage gender equality in employment, and the idea that doing so would make the world a nicer place for reasons other that gender equality (e.g. the idea that women leaders would start fewer wars).

I agree that the second idea is pretty dodgy, and sometimes offensive in the way it’s presented, but that doesn’t stop the fact that it’s strange to hear you claim to support gender equality in the very same post that you complained about being “bombarded” with information about the glass ceiling. Are you against the glass ceiling or not?

Good News: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/06/shares-phone-hacking

Bad news: boots and P&G have both fobbed me of saying they are waiting for the enquiry, which means “hoping people will forget soon”

All the people criticising companies for wanting to wait until the police investigation is over: isn’t it kind of reasonable to want to find out whether allegations are actually true before acting on them?

We appreciate that the allegations made about the News of the World are of interest to some of our customers. and in response to those who think we should *wait to see if the allegations are true*, I’d say that the NOTW has lied about this so many times over the past four or five years that we should suspend our benefit of the doubt and let the pressure be on them this time to prove in law and public inquiry that they had nothing to do with it. And – let Ms Brooks, Messrs Murdoch Snr and Jnr and Andy Coulson come on national television and radio and tell us straight they deplore this and will tell the whole truth personally instead of sending some little PR lackey out to do their job. Shame on them.

isn’t it kind of reasonable to want to find out whether allegations are actually true before acting on them?

Too late for that. Fortunately I cornered the market in flaming torches and pitchforks earlier.

Same responses as you – Boots, WHSmith and P&G. Still nothing from Morrissons, and Diageo.

Great work Sunny.

It is like living in a third rate banana republic. The politicians, the police, and a corporate scum bag all in it together. To see Alistair Campbell on News night made me reach for the vomit bucket. He smugly tried to pretend that Murdoch had very little influence over Blair. You fucking lying piece of shit Campbell. Oh yes, you where the big man attacking the BBC when you had uncle Rupert to protect you. We all know the real reason Blair was desperate to sign up to the Neo con wars was because he had spent 5 years sucking Murdoch’s cock and he could see it all going wrong if he pissed off his backer. Sexing up the evidence to appease Rupert

And the tories stink over all this. Another black mark for Thatcher who started the love in with Murdoch, and now Cameron. The leader of the commons select committee got a £3000 donation to his cricket club from Sky sports and then told fellow Mps to be careful investigating NI .Fuck the lot of them the sleazy corrupt bunch of political pygmies.

And then we have the Met. Dear oh dear, what a corrupt institution we have there. Backhanders, turning a blind eye. They became the private army of NI despite the fact that Murdoch pays so little tax here. Fucking scumbags the lot of them. This boycott should increase to all Murdoch’s enterprises. The Times, Sky, they are all part of the same giant snake.

Erm, the NOTW have publicly said they are “very close to, we believe, identifying an individual or individuals who potentially commissioned this act”. That should be good enough for most people to be getting along with, I’d have thought.

Fortunately I cornered the market in flaming torches and pitchforks earlier.

Quite right. Wishing to prevent people from profiting from the illegal violation of the privacy of the families of murdered children is exactly like the medieval practice of burning witches. Well observed, Tim.

I must express my repugnance that your company is still prepared to advertise in the News of the World. They and News International have consistently lied about their relationship to phone hacking and the latest appalling revelations border on atrocity. I do the bulk of my shopping at Morrisons but will be boycotting your store and shopping at the Co-op till you suspend your ads as they and other companies so honourably have. To give money to a company so mired in deceit and inhumanity is tantamount to complicity. The only pressure we ordinary people can bring to bear on these media giants is to encourage other giants like yourselves to distance yourselves and your money from them. If you continue to advertise you risk damaging your otherwise good reputation.

How about…

Dear Orange and 02

I congratulate you on not removing your advertising from the NOTW after they hacked the phones of a murdered girl, families or murder victims and terrorism because I, like you, don’t give a shit about them.

I would be happy to spend money with your company but mobile phones are for speaking to people and I hate people.

Yours,

A Nasty Person

@ 55 Larry T

“Erm, the NOTW have publicly said they are “very close to, we believe, identifying an individual or individuals who potentially commissioned this act”. That should be good enough for most people to be getting along with, I’d have thought.”

And if you were accused of a crime, and the police said they believed they were very close to identifying you as the guilty party, would you be cool with everyone treating you as a criminal?

Look, if companies want to stop working with the NotW, that’s up to them. I just don’t think they should be castigated for continuing to work with them when the facts aren’t even out yet. In some countries, companies can do terrible things without it ever being confirmed, because the infrastructure to do something about it just doesn’t exist. This isn’t one of those countries.

“Quite right. Wishing to prevent people from profiting from the illegal violation of the privacy of the families of murdered children is exactly like the medieval practice of burning witches.”

It’s a bit of a stretch to say that a company who advertises in the NotW is “profiting from the illegal violation of the privacy of the families of murdered children” when the story came out all of five minutes ago and nothing’s really been confirmed yet.

Also, I’m pretty sure Tim wasn’t drawing a connection to witch-burning.

59. Just Visiting

Chaise Guevara

there was a NoW journalist on Channel 4 News tonight, saying he’d hacked phones and paid policeman for info.

I don’t think even the NoW are saying anymore that it didn’t happen.

See as Murdoch’s news arm have continued the Bush administrations use of torture, I recommend that The Murdoch family and Brooks should be taken to the Tower and put on the rack and told if they don’t talk they will be stretched and then boiled alive.

And if any of them complains it should be pointed out that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.

If I was accused of a crime, which I had indeed committed and was prepared to publicly admit to, then, yes, I would be cool with people treating me as a criminal.

62. Chaise Guevara

@ 59 and 61

Fair enough. Still, there’s the question of whether this was endemic or whether reporters were acting independently. My suspicions point strongly in one direction, as I imagine yours do to, but it’s still up in the air.

I just don’t think we should condemn tagentally-connected companies for not wanting to jump the gun. If Brooks was convicted over this and those companies were still doing business with NotW, then I’d feel differently.

63. Richard P

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the BBC says BSkyB is actually NotW’s number 1 advertiser ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14044052 ). Lobbying BSkyB is probably a lost cause though?

Chaise, there is ample evidence that NOTW have acted appallingly. Yes the details of who what when where still need to be sorted out, but the overall picture leaves very little room for doubt. And if it’s serious enough for MPs to clear 3 hours of their day to discuss it at short notice, then it’s serious enough for us.

And look, it isn’t about ‘castigating’ people. It’s about hitting Murdoch in the one and only place that he can be hurt: his wallet. Think of it as the operation of the market. The one thing companies need to do is satisfy their customers. So let’s rally their customers to deliver a very clear message. Fair enough, no?

It’s good for the companies. Ford in particular landed an excellent piece of free PR by publicly pulling the plug immediately, and other companies have got the same opportunity.

According to The Guardian, O2 is suspending advertising with the News of the World:

“We share the concerns of customers and employees about these quite shocking claims. Whilst the situation unfolds, we will not be purchasing advertising in News of the World. We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Virgin media have made the decision to withdraw their advertising. Seemingly too late for this week but they have cancelled future weeks.

Why should we give NI the benefit of the doubt? Since when has any Murdoch outlet showed such restraint? NEVER.

Rush to judgement is their stock in trade, yet now they want due process. Ever notice how these right wing thugs always run to their lawyers when in trouble? while attacking their enemies as being Lilly livered liberals. They deserve no respect or no due process.

Add O2 to the list pulled…

Hi Dunne,

Many thanks for your kind reply. This will certainly influence my upcoming purchasing decision. To be honest, I was loathe to move from O2 but sometimes ethics trump other considerations. In this case you have ameliorated my concerns, and I look forward to renewing my contract with your company.

First response I have had is from Proctor and Gamble:

[67] quite right – oh, and well done Sunny – this is great stuff.

Thanks for doing this work for me. I’m doing my part and emailing each.

Quite right. Wishing to prevent people from profiting from the illegal violation of the privacy of the families of murdered children is exactly like the medieval practice of burning witches. Well observed, Tim.

Torches and pitchforks are rather different from witch burning. It’s an angry mob. Stirred into righteous anger by what they’ve been told about bad peoples’ awful behaviour. The sort of thing, in other words, that the NOTW has done so well in creating over the years.

How silly of us!

Next time we should check with Tim J before becoming disgusted by disgusting behaviour.

Boots response:

Thank you for your email and for taking the time to write to us.

We appreciate that the allegations made about the News of the World are of interest to some of our customers. As a retailer, we use our advertising to inform our customers about the great offers and products that we have. Media is chosen to carry our advertisements based on their ability to reach as many of our customers as possible.

We do listen to our customers and will be carefully reviewing and monitoring customers’ views on these allegations before making any decisions.

75 – you’re allowed to do whatever you want chief as far as I’m concerned.

I think that’s quite an extraordinary response from Boots. Is what they’re saying that they’re not sure how wrong hacking into a dead girl’s phone is, and need to check with the customers in order to figure it out?

Don’t forget to thank the companies who join the boycott.

No 78

Peter Silk,

More like what they are saying is; “we’re working out which action will lose us least money. Will any bad publicity for not joining a boycott of NI, outweigh the revenue increase from the adverts”.

81. James Reynolds

O2 have gone

Re Chaise Guevara at 47. I am opposed to discrimination against anyone on the grounds of her or his sex, sexual orientation, race and/or religion. I believe in full equality on those grounds. I am therefore opposed to the ‘glass ceiling’, just as I would be opposed to people being barred from high positions in the world of work on the above criteria.

But I also am aware that not a little of the complaints about the ‘glass ceiling’ is akin to the arguments of some suffragettes when arguing against voting restrictions on women a century back: their main complaint was that good, decent upper-class women could not vote whilst many nasty, vulgar lower-class men could vote. Both are predicated upon a fight for a privilege position, not equality in general. Not a few opponents of the ‘glass ceiling’ are careerists who don’t give a monkeys about working-class women, and for whom equality means an equal fight with men up the greasy pole to the top.

The presence of a woman as Prime Minister or as an editor of a popular newspaper is an indication that the ‘glass ceiling’ has been pierced to a degree. That in itself is not a bad thing; it could be considered a good thing were it not vastly outweighed by the fact that Thatcher was a vicious Tory who waged war on the working class, men and women alike, and Wade/Brookes ran a vile rag called the News of the World.

Why not publish a template for a response to companies responding that they are reviewing the situation and possibly not taking any action until the outcome of the investigation. I sent this reply to P&G when given their lame response;

Thank you for your response. There is no reason why your company cannot suspend their advertising with NotW until the outcome of the enquiry. Other companies are protecting their reputation by taking this sensible approach.
I shall be suspending my purchase of your products – especially any that are advertised in NotW – until you take a more robust stance.

Yours sincerely
