Ace Indy front-page compares pensions pots

by Sunny Hundal

On the day of one of the biggest public-sector strikes for decades, the Indy has this awesome front page.

All credit to them for pointing this out.

And most MPs work far fewer years than civil servants or indeed private sector employees or self-employed people.

Spot the odd one out?

Yes, is it the one comparing the average where everyone earns the same salary to other averages of public sector workers earning different salaries? The average is a pretty useless metric unless you are comparing the average MP pension with the average Lt. Colonel army pension.

Pretty sure my dad’s pension isn’t anything close to what is quoted there for the fire service!

One could do the same thing with MP’s salaries versus nurses’s salaries. One could also replace MPs with local council chief executives or NHS Trust directors, surgeons or indeed union leaders, who earn more than MPs. It’s not clear to me why comparisons between public sector workers and high paid public sector execs is what’s relevant here.

I’d be more interested in comparisons between comparable public sector workers and private sector workers – isn’t that what support for public sector strikes hinges on?

Luis, given that there’s an article on the front page of this site answering that very question, I’m rather perplexed you ask it.
http://liberalconspiracy.org/2011/06/29/is-public-sector-pay-really-higher-than-private-as-cameron-claims/

Sunny,

I was commenting just on the Indie front page; I don’t see that its merits are altered by what you publish here.

I did see that post: It doesn’t compare public and private sector pensions.

It is difficult to compare wages across different types of job, but that doesn’t mean comparisons are impossible. There is a good deal of research that tries to control for skill and experience. Like this

http://www.efm.bris.ac.uk/echtl/europublicgap.pdf

Which of the above would be missed least if they went on strike?

Total strawman argument.

MP with no experience – salary £65000 + expenses
MP with 100 years experience – salary £65000 + expenses

Range of other sectors goes from min wage to £250,000.

You can’t compare the salaries and you sure as abused stats are abused stats, can’t compare the pensions.

Find out what the pensions are for the people in those sectors earning £65000 and at least you are comparing similar things.

This article plays to people’s (and I include my own) prejudices. If right leaning had played a similar game you would have howled for days – unfortunate you won’t call foul on your own team.

10. citizen spork

Just a shame the iPaper, or whatever it is called, decided to say the strikes were about receiving a “less generous pension”. While true in a semantic sense it kind of misses the point.

11. citizen spork

Oh, and the big issue missed about MPs pensions that could’ve been made was missed, namely that the Hutton report recommendations are being supported across the board, except the part about MPs pensions.

Luis – are you drunk? That’s exactly what the post does.

Dr*T
MP with no experience – salary £65000 + expenses
MP with 100 years experience – salary £65000 + expenses

MPs also have variable salaries. The PM is not paid the same as a backbencher, and also has more money for his office and a nice pad to live in.

@DrT “This article plays to people’s (and I include my own) prejudices.” Well put.

Sunny,

..and so he should have, he’s the prime minister. All MPs get the same basic apart from the 20 or so in Cabinet. That’s about 600 MPs.

T

15. manoamano

Quick! Look over there! Ignore the issue at hand, just engage in whataboutery when you’ve lost all hope of winning the argument with the public!

16. Luis Enrique

That’s exactly what the post does.

Sunny, I am worried you are going doolally. That LC post was about salaries, I said I’d be interested in pension comparisons, because that’s what Indie front page was about. Not exactly the same thing are they? And that’s quite aside from the fact you responded to a comment about the Indie front page by pointing out something published on LC, and then called my comment trolling.

MPs also have variable salaries. The PM is not paid the same as a backbencher, and also has more money for his office and a nice pad to live in.

ISTM this is an odd way of putting it. MPs all receive the same salary, ~£65k. If they have an additional responsibility – say, being a PM, Government Minister, Committee chairman, or Speaker – they receive an additional salary.

Oh dear.

The rightwing trolls and their pettifogging diversions.

What on earth is Enrique wittering on about (again)?

This is a piece about the levels of pension paid to certain public sector workers to smash the myth that somehow they’re “gold plated” or of enormous sums.

Yet the seething, jealous Right piles in with its hilariously irrelevant observations.

@ 18 BenM

I’m new to this site, but I’m learning.
I note the number of messages in response to this article and the number of re-tweets;
relatively few comments and a huge number of re-tweets … says it all, really.

Okay, so what’s the deal with accusing people who raise perfectly reasonable and obvious criticisms of being trolls–is it some kind of ironic meta-commentary on the Dunning-Kruger effect?

Here’s a question for Mr M (or indeed, for any of the hundreds of readers who tweeted this post): If you took the average salary of 25 year olds and compared it to the average salary of 45 year olds, what do you think you would find?

Would you put the results on the front page of your newspaper?

vimothy,

Okay, so what’s the deal with accusing people who raise perfectly reasonable and obvious criticisms of being trolls–is it some kind of ironic meta-commentary on the Dunning-Kruger effect?

No – they clearly don’t even know the meaning of “troll”, so it’s even more Dunning-Kruger.

22. Luis enrique

BenM, the Indie published a front page comparing pensions of high paid versus low paid public sector workers, called for the high paid ones to share the pain. Fair enough. I thought the issue was more about public versus private sector, rather than within public sector comparisons, so I said so. Ok with you?

Luis, don’t know if this will help…
a) the public versus private sector “issue” is a separate argument
b) the Indy’s sub-heading is THEIR OWN, and not one that’s helpful. The issue is not about asking the more highly-paid to share the pain.
c) the govt allegation is that ALL public sector pensions are gold-plated and too generous by far, and therefore ALL must be cut back (or almost all, see post 11 above).
d) the Indy’s pictorial uses a selection of typical and average public sector workers to illustrate that these are NOT on gold-plated pension schemes, but dares to wonder if gold might be the appropriate colour for MPs.

@18 BenM

I think you’ll find Luis is more of a fellow traveller than you give him credit for. I find his comments incisive and very well informed. Troll he certainly isn’t.

rook,

It’s a basic principle of quantitative methods that you want to compare like with like. The Indy front page is the sort of thing you might see in a stats textbook next to the phrase “uses and abuses of statistics”.

In order to compare the mean pensions of two groups, you need to hold all the other relevant variables constant. If you think about this, it’s pretty obvious. Why would the average MP get the same pension as the average health worker? Would you expect a priori, e.g., the average astrophysics lecturer to get the same pension as the average civil servant? Of course not. You don’t know that the average university lecturer and the average civil servant are the same age, have the same level of education, training, etc, etc, etc.

So it’s not a meaningful comparison—that’s the problem.

@ 24 rook

It’s that sub-heading that’s causing the problem, isn’t it? The figures given certainly suggest that public sector pensions aren’t the gold-plated £25kpa claimed by those attacking them.

What I find astonishing is how cowed the private sector workers are. This meme that, “I don’t get a decent pension so why should they?” has really taken. Nobody sees fit to take it further, though, do they? How can someone with a £6kpa pension manage? Do I see a taxpayer subsidy there somewhere?

27. Luis enrique

Thanks rook,

Yes, perhaps the main point was just that most public sector pensions aren’t so golden. Bit about the MPs a bit of a distraction then.

Although I’d like to know how much you’d have to save up in your private pension fund to buy a 10k a year pension.

28. Charlieman

@12. Sunny Hundal: “MPs also have variable salaries. The PM is not paid the same as a backbencher, and also has more money for his office and a nice pad to live in.”

Skipping the first argument, the PM and ministers and just plain MPs are given public funds to pay for administrative assistance and for research (and absolutely not for political activists on the pay roll).

The PM superficially gets a nice flat in London, possibly swapping it with the neighbour according to family size (there is much to analyse within the Blair/Brown property exchange, contrasting domestic civility and Cabinet). But the Downing Street flat is not a sinecure; the choice for a PM with young family is to live at Downing Street as a family (exposed) or to have another London/Elsewhere home (expensive, possibly less exposed) is challenging.

Cameron and his wife are wealthy enough to have many options. They can afford two homes plus Downing Street.

We have to turn this around. An MP should be a common person but an exceptional person. Any MP may become PM. The last common citizen to become PM, I would argue, is Edward Heath.

Was his premiership a freak event? Why so few common people?

28 – Jim Callaghan, Margaret Thatcher, John Majorand Gordon Brown were all ‘common citizens’ I’d have thought.
