‘Labour isn’t changing relationship with unions’
Over the weekend, both the Observer and the Independent reported that the Labour party is to overhaul its relationship with the unions.
This was extrapolated from a fairly middle-of-the-road speech Ed Miliband gave, on how the party needs to do more to listen, with no mentions of the unions whatsoever.
Michael Crick at the BBC is taking this further, claiming:
I am told on high authority that it was meant as a warning to the unions that Miliband wants to cut back their block vote at the party conference.
Except that a source close to Ed Miliband today told me Ed does not expect any changes to the Labour party’s relationship with the unions “in the near future”.
Update: My mistake, I confused Labour’s traditional link with the unions (which will remain unaffected according to senior sources) with what happens at Labour conference (which is now subject to overhaul).
Apologies for the error.

The bankers recently said “it’s time to stop apologising”. Fine, if you insist. It’s time for Miliband to take on the same approach and take the Government to task over some of its plans, and this is a good one to lay down a marker. Ignore what the Sun or the Mail thinks, they have their own agenda.
It’s time for the Labour leadership to grow a backbone and fight back, in much the way Ed Balls has done. Stop apologising (especially if, like the financial crisis, it wasn’t your fault to start with) and start fighting back. It’s the only way you’ll get wavering voters like myself back on side.
This raises an important question: why do high ranking BBC journalists still think that unions have a bloc vote at Labour Party conferences?
Given Labour is bankrolled almost entirely by the unions this is hardly a surprise.

“Given Labour is bankrolled almost entirely by the unions this is hardly a surprise”.
Is that any worse than being bankrolled by unaccountable millionaires, some of whom are non-domicile?
A shame that Ed didn’t learn about socialism, solidarity and social justice from Ralph.
