Greens win in South Essex
An interesting result from last night’s local council by-elections saw the Greens gain a council seat in Rochford in South Essex from the Tories. South Essex is not exactly renowned as the home of environmentalism, but this is the second Green councillor to be elected in this ward, securing an impressive 49.8% of the vote.
Other results saw Labour gain seats from the Tories in Cornwall, coming from fourth place, and in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, and further examples of the collapse of the Lib Dems in areas such as Crewe and Newcastle.
Particular congratulations are due to Independent Cllr Groudd in Conwy, who was elected with 94% of the vote.

Southend Airport. Enough said.
“South Essex is not exactly renowned as the home of environmentalism”
Yeah but Rochford is a bit like that, if you know what I mean.

“Southend Airport. Enough said.”
The lad has a point.
It’s interesting, but when you look at places where the Greens gained council seats a couple of years ago, they tended to do best in well off areas that had previously been held by the Tories or the Lib Dems. The BNP however tended to do best in areas previously held by Labour.
Nuff said!
@1 Yes, wonderful just how “green” people can suddenly become if they realise that it is actually in their selfish interest to be so, isn’t it.
Sad that they rarely progress to see the bigger picture beyond themselves though, to take the same concern for the suffering when it is inflicted on other people and fellow creatures who have their habitat destroyed.
OP: “…but this is the second Green councillor to be elected in this ward, securing an impressive 49.8% of the vote.”
Well done, but winning the first seat in the ward was more notable. Whatever, a cracking share of the vote.
i just want to disagree with the comment about the greens not winning seats off labour during the labour government the greens did win seats off labour in substanitial numbers. it has now become harder to win seats off labour since the general election and the greens only managed this in solihull and brighton this year but even so the greens have held on to most of the seats they have won off labour. if the greens are beginning to win seats of torys and liberals then i would suggest this is good for the whole left and strategically fortunate considering labours voters are flocking back to them.
