Boris hands out £50k just for Olympics bunting
Did you know London Mayor Boris Johnson is handing out £50,000 just for Olympics related bunting?
According to the Mayor’s office, each London borough would receive the cash to pay for flags, banners and bunting, just so they could have a “uniform look for the streets of the capital” for the Olympics next year.
We must be rolling in money for London’s Mayor to think handing out £50,000 just for bunting is a great idea.
But one council had the good sense to question whether this was the right decision.
Richmond Council said it would be giving “careful consideration” to what would be appropriate for the borough, claiming £50,000 was “a considerable sum in these frugal times”.
Our borough will be in pristine condition come the Olympics and that will arguably be a better advertisement for our city than a few pieces of branded bunting hanging from lampposts across Richmond upon Thames.
Maybe the Mayor would like to consider offering us an additional £50,000 to spend in on additional street cleaning during the course of the games, in particular to those boroughs which host events such as the road races which may well generate extra rubbish on our streets, notwithstanding our best efforts.
Perhaps Boris should stop wasting Londoners’ money, as he did with the new Routemaster?

Agree this is a total waste of money. However a drop in the ocean when compared to the total cost of the Olympics. Ideas such as holding the three day event in Greenwich park requiring substantial alterations and damage to the park which will then be put back after the games when we have a perfectly good facility at Badminton is far more wasteful.

How is bunting any less of a make-work scheme than digging holes or whatever other nonsense your beloved Keynes wanted to do? I am all for cuts, lots of ‘em. However you are not, so my comment was directed at you! You know, because it was a reply to your post!
If you want to argue about whether the Olympics could have been done for less money, I suggest speaking to your hero Mr Livingstone who was offered an alternative scheme using existing sites but decreed that it should be held in East London as a kind of Keynesian boost to the area.

I suppose he has a point – if you do not believe that government has a role in promoting events in society (which I thought was me, not Sunny – maybe we’ve swapped views or something…) then this is a bad idea. I have to say, I’m finding it hard to justify.
Problem is, the people who will be put off Mr Johnson by this sort of thing are highly unlikely to back Mr Livingston, and quite likely to still vote for Mr Johnson because they would perceive Mr Livingston as a much greater evil (this is metaphorical, before anyone jumps on me).
Umm forgive me for my economic ignorance but it is my understanding that Keynesian boosting of the economy means creating jobs & suchlike so that people spend more so people need to make more things etc.. spending 50K on some flags isn’t really the same thing, at all. correct me if I’m wrong.

OK – you’re wrong (or may be). Spending on goods creates jobs (and helps businesses – Keynes was not opposed to business in any way remember) so buying goods can also act as a Keynsian stimulus (and perhaps a more productive one than the digging of holes).
Then again, it can simply act as a further stimulus for the economies of the Chinese manufacturer and American retailer…

Watchman, indeed. It appears that the “multiplier” effect of a Keynesian splurge in a free trade, floating currency situation is either “one” or “less than one”, which is why people like Sunny who argue for ever higher spending to boost demand are barking up totally the wrong tree. However, while Sunny continues to hold on to his rather quaint economic ideas I think it is hilarious that he should be arguing that the Tories are spending too much on the Olympics.
Having said all that, I suspect that making London look nice for the month while the international spotlight is on it will have rather a more significant positive effect than the simple enlargement of aggregate demand. After all, travel and tourism are something that this country makes a huge amount of money out of! At the cost of 16 pence per Londoner, I think this bunting is probably pretty good value.

I’m not going to get into a row about Keynes, but I think you’re missing a level of detail here. If Sunny was saying this money should not be spent, that would look hypocritical. If he thinks it should be spent elsewhere, that’s consistent. Deciding that spending is a good idea doesn’t mean you want it spent at random.
I agree. For example we could be slashing costs and non-jobs in the public sector in order to improve the hallowed “front line services”. However Sunny has – in concert with his genius retired accountant hero – consistently argued that any and all the proposed very slight reductions in spending will hurt someone or something and that the state should actually be spending more to boost demand. But apparently Tory spending is bad so a fairly puny sum of money spent on prettying up the capital during the Olympics is now an act of pure evil.

Indeed. I highly doubt that 50K spent on flags will be a significant boost to the London economy (the Olympics in general may be, although they are quite expensive to hold – just hope the tourists spend a lot eh) which is why I don’t think it’s fair to hold it up as an example of Keynesian economics. If it was 50K on flags plus other investment then there might be a debate to be had but as it stands IMO it’s throwing money away for very little benefit. Except to the US and Chinese economies, perhaps – in the true internationalist spirit of the games!

50k on bunting that is probably produced in developing countries is a waste of money. 50k on projects that will create jobs here are a good idea. Understand the difference?

It appears that Johnson is giving £50,000 to 33 boroughs, a total of £1.65 million. He is giving them the money so that Councils can determine what sort of Olympic bunting to erect in their area. Which sounds rather better to me than centrally determining what will be displayed. I have no doubt that Richmond councillors and residents would prefer that the choice was made locally and that the complaint is political opportunism.
The practice of erecting themed bunting for major events isn’t a radical innovation and Richmond Council will get to pick what goes up on their streets. I don’t have the figures to determine whether this is an effective spend of £1.65 million.

It seems a lot of money on the face of it (55 police officers!) but in the scheme of things – i.e. an Olympic budget of some £7bn excluding contingency – it seems pretty trivial (0.02% of the budget).
Do you think I am somehow representing “The Tories”? Or is that shorthand for “anyone who doesn’t think I am God’s Gift To Political Opinion”? I am not tying myself in knots at all, unless that is shorthand for “suggesting you are being inconsistent by denouncing any and all reductions in public spending and also accusing Boris Johnson of wasting money”.

On reflection, I suspect that Johnson may have a bit of intelligence about building the London brand. The new Routemaster will be crap for many commuters (too small, not economical) but it will be appropriate for some services. And it is a cracking good emblem for London. So it is down to RfL to run it on the right services.
Criticism of the Routemaster should be compared with the welcome that the TX series of taxis received. The TX outline recalls its predecessor, the FX4. London taxi drivers understood the brand value of the taxi cab silhouette which is why the TX series has become a success.
