GPs charged £800 just to hear Lansley’s plans
The Commissiong is a conference being held in London on 15-16th June.
Their website says:
Wherever you stand on the debate about the future of GP commissioning, one thing seems certain: significant change is on the way. But how resolutely will Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Health Secretary , Andrew Lansley, cling to their original vision? And how far will they have been persuaded by the arguments of the BMA Chair, Dr Hamish Meldrum and other healthcare experts about the need for major revisions to the White Paper?
The answer to these and many other urgent and practical questions crucial to the future of GP practices like yours will be found at Commissioning 2011…
Who is the keynote speaker? Oh look, it’s health secretary Andrew Lansley.
And who will be exhibiting?
Accountants
Associations and charities
Banks and financial institutions
Consultancies
It’s nice that Lansley is speaking directly to GPs about his plans but at what cost?
The price of a full ticket is £800.
Who wants to bet this will be passed on to the cost of the NHS or patients themselves?

So – this is not a government enterprise is it? Mr Lansley is speaking, but not organising (and indeed, has only just been confirmed, unlike the price). It’s a normal industry conference, and therefore we can assume is priced according to industry norms (considering the number of sponsors and things, they must think people will turn up). Quite why the NHS can fund those sort of costs (or at least people who are paid by the NHS can fund those sort of costs) is another matter, and perhaps one at which it would be more worth looking?

Incidentally, the name of the conference is the Commissioning Conference – the Commissiong sounds like a week-long ITV drama about Vietnam to me…
This is a money spinner from CloserStill Media, not a uk.gov, NHS or anyone else official event. There is no need for any GP to go, any that are, are junketing, just as representatives from all walks of life junket all the time. I have even paid money to attend an event that had one Sunny Hundal on a panel ![]()
Virtually no-on will pay the headline figure, there is an early bird for £99, sponsers and exhibitors will give away tickets etc. It would in fact be a good measure of the sense of people running the NHS if they do pay full whack.
Liberal Conspiracy will get very dull very fast if it reports on the huge number of conferences that public sector can go to and could get charged high prices for, stick to the real scandals.

I didn’t say it was
I’m merely saying that if Lansley was talking better to GPs already, you wouldn’t need something like this – the cost of which will be passed on to us!
Sunny,

Since he is not integral to the event this is a bit of a non-issue. He is merely the headline speaker – if most conferences I’ve been to are any guide, the really useful information will be elsewhere – this just gives those working in the field the ability to see (and perhaps question) Mr Lansley in person, as an added draw to attend the event.
With you on the costs – but if Tony is correct, these are a lot less than the headline.
