Minutes show Cameron met NHS advisor Britnell despite claims

During PMQs yesterday David Cameron was asked about Mark Britnell, who said the NHS would be “shown no mercy” in its privatisation.

Cameron replied: “I’ve never heard of this person in my life”, and tried to turn the tables around by saying he was actually linked to the previous Labour government.

But this is odd coming from the Prime Minister for several reasons.

First, Britnell was appointed by Downing Street just days ago to a “kitchen cabinet” of advisors who were to meet regularly to offer Number 10 advice on NHS policy.

Did Cameron not even know who was advising him? Did he not meet them?

Second, Mark Britnell was chief executive of NHS South Central during the Labour government. The health authority covered the Oxfordshire area, including David Cameron’s constituency of Witney.

A briefing paper published by the Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust has evidence that David Cameron then did meet Mark Britnell.

It details a meeting between David Cameron and health officials, including Mark Britnell, on 16th February 2007.

Britnell was appointed NHS South Central’s first chief executive in 2006.

Either Cameron didn’t pay attention who was building a hospital in his own back yard, even after meeting him, or he’s lying.

It’s becoming quite a habit for Cameron to mislead or even lie in Parliament. Eventually it will get the better of him.

It details a meeting between David Cameron and health officials, including Mark Britnell, on 16th February 2007.

Cameron wasn’t Prime Minister in 2007, so Britnell sure wasn’t advising him then. An MP can hardly be expected to catch the name of – let alone remember- every bureaucrat he meets on a hospital visit.

The only ‘liars’ are those who manufactured the myth that Britnell is/was some Tory placeman. The opposite is true. He was very close to the Labour leadership.

His Wikipedia page says Britnell was a “student activist” at Warwick, but doesn’t specify in what cause. My bet is that he was a leftie.

However Cameron was categorical in his denial, by being so, he’s saying dedinitivly that he never has, ever, if he can’t know this for sure, he shouldn’t make have stated, “I’ve never heard of this person in my life”. He did, therefore he’s mislead the house, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Nonsense. Nor does the NHS briefing paper clearly establish whether Britnell was even at the meeting in 2007. It merely says he confirmed funding on the same day. Ambiguous.

Cameron said that his reaction was “I’ve never heard of him in my life” when reading press reports (probably Guardian) that this bloke Britnell was said to be one of his advisors. “Senior advisors” was the phrase some reports used.

Why is Sunny still running this headline:

So the Prime Minister was absolutely correct to say he hadn’t heard of David BritnellWhat a relief these people aren’t in government anymore!

Bear in mind Eric Pickles used to be in the Revolutionary Communist Party, along with John Reid. So Mark Britnell being a friend of New Labour, who were in favour of letting the private sector milk the NHS, and a friend of the conservatives, who are in favour of letting the private sector take over huge chunks of the NHS, is not a particularly long political journey.
