Lightly covered in the UK media has been a Clarence House decision to ban any satirical use of footage of tomorrow’s Royal Wedding.

This has kabooshed the Friday show planned by Australia’s leading satirical troupe The Chaser’s War On Everything, who some may recall from an all too brief outing on BBC4.

They were planning this live commentary on the Royal Wedding

The Chaser’s interventionist and highly, HIGHLY, irreverent comedy had its apotheosis with them rocking up to the Sydney 2007 APEC summit in 2007 in a motorcade and getting to the ‘Red Zone’. Out of the car popped ‘Osama Bin Laden’. Red zone, red faces: it’s what they do.

Yes, this is closer to Chris Morris territory than – say – Goon Show.

Since it was announced yesterday that the Chaser’s were, contrary to Marina Hyde’s mildly racist presumption in The Guardian, very much on Clarence House’s last minute exclusion radar none other than former OZ PM and now FM Kevin Rudd has – basically – said ‘get a life’.

If you want my personal view – this is not the government view – but my personal view is I really think the BBC needs to lighten up a bit and just get a bit of a sense of humour

That’s the BBC not Prince Charles by the way. As ABC Director of Television Kim Dalton said it is ‘interesting’ that the BBC have put themselves in the position of imposing restrictions on behalf of the Royal family.

“I’m afraid at the ABC that would be in complete contradiction of our editorial policies,” he says.

The Chasers are bloody brilliant and in their absence I shall turn to the British satirical TV take on the wedding errr…?
Vodka it is then.

If The Chaser’s reputation is what we believe it to be, some form of revenge is probably already being planned. At least I hope so.

The BBC gets worse by the day. Thompson really should be ashamed. We need more of this stuff, not less. Come back, Chris Morris!

I suppose that the Traitor’s Gate at the Tower will be re-opened next?

4. abraham_funkingcoln

I think Chris Morris has good sense to not satirise the royal wedding, cause if he did I could imagine the moron press calling him to be beheaded for treason and the idiotic EDL firebombing his house.

Well, let’s not forget that Chris Morris was/is a Channel 4 associate. But yeah this is a shame by the Beeb, after all we British do piss-taking just as well as we do pomp & ceremony. A missed opportunity.

To be fair to Marina Hyde, Clarence House probably never have heard of The Chaser. They did not contact ABC and demand that The Chaser not appear. ABC decided to pull their show after reading the guidelines agreed upon between the palace and UK broadcasters.

Oh no….. the Royal family are not political, they have no power at all. (snark)

They invite the Prince of Bahrain, and other various dodgy dictators, to this political wedding but exclude the 2 former British prime ministers. They tell the BBC what they can, and can’t say or cover.

The Royal family are a tory institution with tory sympathies, tory arrogance of power, and tory lack of sense of humour.

Ha ha – lefties sneer at the public for being obsessed with the Royal Wedding but this the fourth or fifth Royal article on LibCon in three days.

Who is really obsessed?

9. Chaise Guevara

@ 8

“lefties sneer at the public ”

Instant fail. Lefties make up a large section of the public.

As for your oh-so-deep point: you’re confusing lefties with republicans, and you’re confusing sneering with political criticism. There’s a difference between debating the relative merits of monarchies and republics and simply taking the piss out of people for obsessing over lowest-common-denominator entertainment – and I’ll think you’ll find the right do both as well.

10. abraham_funkingcoln

Good to know Colin is obessing over LibCons royal output. Bravo sir!

@Richard

Not according to the ABC and the Chasers. They say they only learned in the last few days of the ‘no satire’ clause *and they say it in there at Clarence House’s insistence. Other broadcasters say they have no such clause in their rights agreement > http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-world/chaser-casts-doubt-on-timing-of-bbc-ban-20110428-1dyfy.html

“Instant fail. Lefties make up a large section of the public”

In your dreams.

stupid troll “Who is really obsessed? ”

Says the brownshirt, German family loving troll who spend his day reading liberal left wing sites.

Better trolls please, these ones are rather stupid.

Sally, what is your problem? Am I really a Nazi because I support the Monarchy? FYI Hitler vetoed the idea of restoring the German royal family to the throne.

I see your hate-filled comments splattered across several threads. My guess is that you are a resentful and dispeptic leftie who has been driven demented by the hegemonic impact of the Royal Wedding.

Why so sour? No, really – what’s at the bottom of it?

Says the brownshirt, German family loving troll

Racist.

“In your dreams.”

Wow. As mature comebacks go, that has to be up there with “I know you are but what am I”.

“In your dreams.”

Erm, in my polls. http://today.yougov.co.uk/commentaries/stephan-shakespeare/left-right-spectrum (pdf with full stats at the bottom of that page).

CG @ 9:

“Instant fail. Lefties make up a large section of the public.”

20-25% maximum — until you start to count those of us who are right-wing economically but left-wing socially, and those who are left-wing economically and right-wing socially. Then you might just get up to 35%+…

19. Chaise Guevara

@ Paul LLC

I’d call a quarter “a large section” – you’d certainly notice if it was gone (insert your own joke here). In truth, as you suggest, it completely comes down to what you define as “left” and “right”. If you’re basing it on national averages, then you’d expect the left to make up about 50% (unless you include ‘centre’ as an option).

Anyhoo, my original point is that it was ridiculous for friend Colin to suggest the left “sneer at the public” when the public includes the left – it’s just another variant of the fallacy where you define “normal people” to mean “people who agree with me”. What he presumably meant was “the left sneer at royalists”, which is still a sweeping nonsensical statement.

“Hitler vetoed the idea of restoring the German royal family to the throne.”

Hitler liked the idea of a Vichy Royal family continuing to be head of state in the UK with a Lord Halifax type as leader of Vichy govt. Why do you think Hess came here to meet senior tories, and members of the Royal family? And why have the establishment gone to such lengths to cover it up by removing documents form govt records, and handing them to the Royal archive at Windsor where they will never see the light of day?

That sucks ass. I LOVE The Chasers. They’re better than Marina Hyde, whose dismissal of them comes as pretty arrogant for somebody who’s made her name slagging off celebrities. I enjoy her writing, but they probably feel the same way about you, Marina,

*.

Protecting the establishment’s interests is the BBC’s default position. Yesterday, for example, Eddie Mair kindly provided the listeners with an interview with the Sunday Times’ economic editor, who told us peas…listeners that the opposition were wrong and that the economy is now growing nicely, just as the government says it is.

sally,

Hitler liked the idea of a Vichy Royal family continuing to be head of state in the UK with a Lord Halifax type as leader of Vichy govt.

Basic lesson in building an argument – you cannot use Hitler’s intentions in what he hoped would be a conquered country to suggest the royal family have any association with Nazism. George VI seems to have been genuinely horrified at Nazism (and the Conservative leader at the time, one Winston Churchill, for all of his sexism, racism, anti-democratic tendencies etc, saw Nazism as an evil akin to Communism), although his older brother was perhaps more sympathetic. But I doubt either would have served as a Vichy monarch – any more than did the European monarchs whose kingdoms were conquered by Hitler’s regime.

As to your wonderful accusation that the royal family is German, could I point out that although Prince Phillip is Danish/Greek (although he fought for the United Kingdom in World War II, which surely makes him British? – he does have two German grandparents though), otherwise you have to go back to George VI’s wife to find a German in the family line. So Prince Williams has three German ancestor in about 30 (unless I’ve missed Germans in the Spenser or Bowes-Lyon lines). Not sure your analysis is that good…

Briar,

Protecting the establishment’s interests is the BBC’s default position. Yesterday, for example, Eddie Mair kindly provided the listeners with an interview with the Sunday Times’ economic editor, who told us peas…listeners that the opposition were wrong and that the economy is now growing nicely, just as the government says it is.

That may be an inconvenient matter of facts of course, since apparently the economy did in fact grow (as most commentators had expected)…

But if you want to compare economic reporting to cracking down on satire that no-one much would watch (other than Daily Mail columnists and fans of the show) then fair enough. I think the issue here is simply a misjudgement by the BBC – whose footage should be freely available to all license payers anyway.

26. Shatterface

How dare the BBC cave in to moralistic populist bullying – today! Yesterday it was a different story: If the BBC put on a satirical show hosted by Andrew Marr, this site’s collective editorial head would explode.

Satire is as much a British institution as the Royal family – and with a longer, more noble, tradition.

They should bring back Spitting Image for a one-off special.

24 – not to mention most of the English are descended from Germans as well…

27 – not Normans then?

I HATE YOU FUCKING LOUSY, TRAITOROUS, SELF-LOATHING, LEFTY, COMMUNIST, ISLAMIST FANBOY SCUM.

WHAT A GREAT DAY THIS WAS FOR SO MANY PEOPLE TO COME TOGETHER (OF ALL SKIN COLOURS) AND JUST CELEBRATE BEING BRITISH AND TO BE PART OF THE FINEST HISTORIC CULTURE IN THE WORLD.

ISLAMIST CUNTS AND STALIN COCK SUCKERS CAN GET ON A PLANE AND LEAVE!

WE’RE SICK TO DEATH OF YOU ALL ANYWAY.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8475290/Islamist-extremism-so-did-we-cure-the-problem.html

There is a reason why Britain, in the words of one French official, is and remains the “Pakistan of the West”, an incubator, entrepot and exporter of Islamic radicalism.

There is a reason why, according to MI6, we face a “unique” threat from home-grown extremists.

There is a reason why Britain is the only country in the Western world to have been subjected to a successful suicide terror attack by its own citizens.

These things have happened, in part, because the last government, and Britain’s security establishment, got its policy just about as wrong as it was possible to get.
We were harsh where we should have been liberal – and liberal where we should have been harsh.

31. Billy Bob Huggie Bear

“”EDL firebombing his house.”””

No it’s Islam that firebombs any infidel (sa,y book publishers) that ‘insults’ it. Get it right. With facts. or just shut up.

I FIND WRITING IN ALL CAPS MAKES ME MORE RESPECTED AND NOT IN FACT THOUGHT OF AS A COMPLETE TOSSER.

33. When Bells Chime Loud

Sally? Fuck off. You insulting sack of crud.
Brownshirts? You really are a sad sack.
Don’t see you pissing off out of Nazi Britain though.

Jeeeesus Henry creatures like you disgrace this country. You fetid commie.

Ironic as well as Communism killed more people and oppressed more people than the Nazis ever did.
And ironic too that your Islamists friends have close ties with the Nazis. Then and now.

So just shut up you tired old slop.

Reporters Without Borders is now joining in with the complaints about the BBC’s actions > http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/04/30/3204384.htm
