Polling brings very bad news for Tories on NHS

Just 17% of people trust Andrew Lansley on NHS ‘reforms’, a new poll by YouGov revealed today, increasing the likelihood he will be moved to a different department when the government ploughs ahead with its unpopular plans.

David Cameron had more credibility at 36%. But a full 56% of people said they did not trust him to make the right decisions on the NHS.

The news is even worse for the Libdems, with 60% of people saying they did not trust Clegg to make the right decisions on the NHS. Only 30% trust him. Ed Miliband fared the best at 39% trusting him and 49% not trusting him.

More worryingly for the government, only 27% of people say they support the NHS proposals, compared to 52% who oppose them.

Anyone hear alarm bells coming from Downing Street?

34% of voters told YouGov the NHS proposals should be abandoned, while 47% say the government should change them to address people’s concerns.

Only 3% think the proposals should continue as planned.

The economy
The poll for the Sunday Times also contained bad news for the government on the economy.

Asked: “Do you think the coalition government is managing the economy well or badly”: 37% were placed in the ‘well’ category, while 53% were in the ‘badly’ category.

Maybe it’s time for the Downfall parody of NHS proposals again?

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. Scots scribbler Gerry Hassan has written several times in recent months about the astonishingly limited (we might even say non-existent) account which the London metropolitan Left offers about the politics of contemporary post-devolution Britain. Here’s a recent example:

http://www.gerryhassan.com/?p=1614

This particular argument strikes me as a classic example of what we’re talking about – since “the NHS” you are referring to is the English NHS. We can’t speak in universal terms about “the” NHS in “this” country at all. Indeed, the inability to do so, it seems to me, strengthens rather than opposes the case made by Tories for the alleged “necessity” of these particular innovations. Yet it never seems to occur to anyone in the metropolitan Left to even approach making such a case.

‘Tis queer – and for me, only serves to bear out Hassan’s thesis.

An immensely curious aspect to all this is the absence of any reported comments by Paul Burstow MP, the LibDem minister of state in the Department of Health. I think we should know whether he stands by Andrew Lansley or agrees with the dissent of Paul Lamb, a government whip who was the LibDem spokesman on health before the election.

I said it earlier this year in this very place: the NHS will be the most important issue this year.

The RCN are sounding the warning bells in their conference this week. The problem is that They ain’t seen nothing yet. The last financial year, which ended last week, was funded by the Darling budget – 5% increase in real terms. We are now in the Osborne budget – flat funding or (if inflation rises, as it inevitably will) a cut in real terms.

The cuts we have seen in the NHS so far – job losses, rising waiting times, rise in cancellation of operations, cuts in treatments (some are now no longer allowed on the NHS), dodgy changes in prescribing practice so that people pay twice as much for their prescriptions – are nothing compared to what will happen later this year. The experts reckon the money will run out this Autumn, just as we get into cold weather with more of the elderly slipping on ice and needing hospital admissions.

Couple this with the effective break down of social care for the elderly (councils are closing nursing homes and charging more for care at home; private providers of nursing care are going out of business) will mean a real crisis will develop. Lansley has shown that he is incompetent, he does not know how to make the NHS work with ample funding, he sure as hell does not know how to make it work in his new, cash strapped, privatised NHS.

It’s a bit late to rein in the swivel-eyed Lansley, but at least it’s a start. However my concern is that this is merely a delay to prevent a total wipeout in the May council elections. Does the referendum feature in these calculations? I’m not sure, I would have thought a low turnout would suit Dave.

I would be happy to lay short odds that the destruction of the NHS will resume apace as soon as May 5th is past.

It is interesting that the majority surveyed did not trust *any* of the mainstream political party leaders (not to mention Lansley) to make changes to the NHS – and rightly so…

How low can you go?
