The Oliver Letwin train-crash in slow motion

by Sunny Hundal

This was Boris Johnson a few weeks ago, when trying to lobby for expanding airport capacity in London:

I was absolutely scandalised the other day to hear a government minister tell me that he did not want to see more families in Sheffield being able to afford cheap foreign holiday.

I think it is an absolutely disgrace that you are seeing a kind of bourgeois repression of people’s ability to take holidays. I really think it is a matter of social justice that we look at aviation capacity in this country.

And who is responsible for such “bourgeois repression”?

Oh look, it turns out to be millionaire cabinet minister Oliver Letwin.

Amusingly, the Daily Mail did not hesitate to use the opportunity to publish a picture of Osborne on his skiing holiday.

And it gets worse. Nick Clegg tells Sky News:

I suggest to him that he probably wants to tread with care when he comes to visit a city that I love. He has now, I think, overnight become the most controversial politician in Sheffield.

At this point its pretty obvious that those remarks were made by Oliver Letwin. So does he say sorry? He tells Sky News:

I do not ever comment on things that are alleged to have been said in private conversations but I would never knowingly ever say anything offensive to anybody.

Awesome.

Paul Scriven, Lib Dem leader of Sheffield city council, has now written to Letwin demanding an apology.

If [the comments] are accurate then Letwin should apologise and take up my invitation to come up to Sheffield to explain himself

Am totally loving this train-crash in slow motion. Let’s hope Letwin leaves it a few more days to apologise.

Reminds me of Mr Toad

Not-entirely-serious-conspiracy-theory: Letwin picked “Sheffield” in order to destroy any remaining LD vote there and in other working class areas, as part of the Tory plan to make sure centre-right LDs with working-class-ish seats defect to the Tory benches next time round.

Or… He chose Sheffield hoping that any criticism of him will rebound in Clegg’s favour (it’s his constituency after all).

“We’re all in this together.”

Thanks, Sunny. I giggled through most of that.

Clegg – “He has now, I think, overnight become the most controversial politician in Sheffield.”

HA HA HA HA! I can just imagine Cleggy’s little two-faces filling with joy when he realised that crown has been (oh so very temporarily) been nicked from his bonce.

Oh, I nearly chocked on my toast.

I love the Letwin sacrificing himself for Clegg theory, sweet!
However, it was only a few weeks ago that at the Lib-Dem conference 2,000 police were deemed necessary to protect the Lib-Dems in their steel cage, from 5000 protesters at the conference in Sheffield. Think in London last week there were 4000 or so police ?and quite a few more protesters…clearly us Sheffielders are a very very very scary lot, so Letwin was probabally thinking of that and worried that that such scary scarey horrid people should ever leave the city.

Leave off, he’s just doing his bit to save the planet, guys. What’s the carbon footprint of a foreign holiday for everyone in Sheffield?

I thought we all agreed that taxes on air travel should reflect the environmental damage done by it. Air travel is only cheap because the airlines aren’t forced to pay for the externalities, right?

Isn’t this exactly the same as saying that no foreign holidays should ever be cheap unless environmentally-friendly transport is used? Don’t we basically agree with Letwin, even if his private conversations are (allegedly) a bit tactless?

The defecit is just a cover for Tory idealogical cuts. As far back as 2001 Oliver Letwin let the cat out of the bag and was reprimanded for saying the party ws planning to make £20 billion cuts to public spending.

If that’s they’re policy then that’s fine but let’s have some honesty about it and not kidding the public that it’s Labours fault and there is no alternative. I think enough evidence has emerged to refute both of those arguments.

Then again honesty and politician should not be mentioned in the same sentence!

Letwin is an arrogant twat, Cameron should sack him (and I say that as a Tory).

Robin Hood Airport at near-by Doncaster is deeply implicated in those cheap holiday flights out of Britain:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/apr/04/oliver-letwin-sheffield-cheap-flights

Contrary to popular myth, Robin Hood, indisputably leader of an armed robbery gang which also engaged in proto-insurgent terrorism, most likely came from Yorkshire, not Nottinghamshire, as is widely, but mistakenly, believed:

Why would they want to name an airport at Doncaster after an armed robber and proto insurgent terrorist? Beats me.

The previous name for Robin Hood Airport was RAF Finningley, which was the base for Britain’s V-bombers when our nuclear deterrent was airborne – true, I know folk who used to work there.

Btw, whatever became of Sheffield Airport on which so much money was spent?

Btw btw Letwin used to be a philosophy don at Cambridge before he went into politics.
