BBC footage identifies police agent crossing line during cuts protest
Footage shot by the BBC inadvertently catches an unidentified man walking up to police constables during a fracas, showing his identification, and quickly walking off beyond police lines.
Watch
The man is unlikely to be a journalist since he’s dressed in gear that covers his face and head, while carrying nothing that looks like a notebook or a camera.
The video was shot by a BBC News helicopter during coverage of the protests away from the main TUC march on Saturday.

The original BBC video (segment 5m50s in).
Agent provocateurs
In January this year the Met Police admitted that it had posted covert officers at the G20 protests last year, despite initially saying it had not.
We had no plain-clothes officers deployed within the crowd. It would have been dangerous for them to put plain clothes officers in a crowd like that. The only officers we deploy for intelligence purposes at public order are forward intelligence team officers who are wearing full police uniforms with a yellow jacket with blue shoulders. There were no plain clothes officers deployed at all.
That was later admitted to be wrong.
The Met has been under criticism after six police officers were unmasked after infiltrating environmental groups. A campaign called No Police Spies was launched in response.
The Met police have yet said nothing about using covert officers on Saturday.

does anybody knows the name of the song in the video?
I must say I saw that in the footage and wondered who the hell he was (bit late now to say, I suppose).
It’s a bit late now to say, but I saw that in the footage and wondered the same thing.
So what?
Sorry for the double post. They went missing for a while.
david cameron attacks his own people.
Hmm, agent provocateur or just a policeman snooping?
If anyone is surprised that the Met use undercover agents during demos, then they are very silly and naive.
I don’t really see the scandal. If the guy had been throwing bottles and bricks and starting the trouble, it would be a different story. But this is just confirmation of the already highly probable and to-be-expected.
Watching for trouble makers or inciting and encouraging? Given that the vadalism will be used by his colleges as justification to crack down on further protests you do have to wonder.
@1
It’s by the XX and is called “Intro” – the first track from their self-titled debut.
The interesting stuff is not the guy passing the policemen, it’s what was going on around him:
At the beginning you can se a single policeman (let’s call him P) wearing his yellow vest on left car side. It’s not clearly visible from the beginning what he’s trying to do. From how things evolve I must assume he’s trying to arrest somebody, let’s call that person X for now.
While the policeman P is busy, some other person (let’s call him Y) obviously is stabbing at P multiple times from a bit of a distance with what seems to be a flagpole. Attention of P seems to be focused on X, so the back of P ain’t really covered while he gets stabbed at by Y.
The person lateron seen passing the policemen, let’s call him A, suddenly seems to leap over towards P & X, possibly trying to assist P / trying to protect him to get stabbed. Splitseconds later the flagpole stabbing ends, possibly due to stabber Y getting disarmed / loosing flagpole.
P, X and A move to the right side of the vans, halfway pushed by the crowd.
One can focus on three different things now:
1.) How A continues to act.
2.) How another person without uniform joins the scene, let’s call him B
3.) How X gets taken care of by P and others
2.: B is a person wearing a brown hoodie. Once P is on the right bus side B, standing at the right bus side as well, seems to protect the back of P while more policemen with yellow vests head in towards X from the right side.
1.: A, P and X having moved to the the right car side creates an empty space allowing the crowd to start moving towards the right car side as well. This “flow of humans” is immediately countered by other policemen with yellow vests pushing left, to secure the ongoing handling of person X. But take a closer look: It’s not the yellow vest policemen alone to head left again! They are spearheaded / joined by A and B! Two persons dressed like protestors, A and B, head towards the stream of protestors to make the stream come to a halt! A turns to the protesting crowd and at one moment uses both hands to create distance between himself and a protestor, lateron raising his arm/hand in a “stop, don’t go this way” kind of motion. Excellent unarmed crowd control performance.
B meanwhile sliped back to the right side of the cars quite early again, meeting up with two other guys (C,D) wearing hoodies and white rim baseball caps, one of which tapping B’s shoulder in what seems to be a sign of “well done”. C and D did seem to assist B while reversing the crowd flow.
3.) X gets dragged towards the right side house front by some policeman, out of the direct line of possible confrontation. It seems as if X still would be struggleing with those policemen after a while.
So to sum it up: I think there are at least 4 policemen not wearing uniforms in that scene, two of them really active, A doing an extremely professional job, calm, unarmed and on the spot. Years of training, I’d suppose.
If A in fact did disarm the stabbing Y person and help policeman P, then A knew himself could be at risk once protestors would realize how he had acted. So A chose to remove himself from the protestor side by slipping past the cops. He knew when it was time to go in and when it was time to get out.
Oh, twin phonebooths instead of cars !?! lol
ok .. didn’t recognize: At the end A obviousy had a reason to “reequip” himself — fiddleing around with his trousers with a little box. I suppose his sender/radio/battery back got loose during the action so he had to refit it…. A gets behind the upper phone booths behind the backs of two photographers taking pictures of two policemen in yellow vests in front of them.
Is that an assortment notes books raining down on the cops – presumably the other agent provocateurs couldn’t be arsed to hand theirs over ?
Rememer when A policeman gets knocked unconsious by someone throwing a metal bar at his head ,It’s alright to say it was an undercover policeman doing it as an agent provocateur, But you can’t say that a black person killed stephen lawrence ,Like nick griffin did ,becasue you’ll be prosecuted for racsim as he was,
@ 15
Who’s claiming that police are knocking each other out with iron bars? How is this relevant to racist assumptions about crime? What, in short, are you on about?
@11 great spot. On the longer video it’s from 5:31, you can see it just as is explained
Ummm…..why do you carry a Scientology ad ( they are an elitist cult!) on this webpage? I thought this was Liberal Conspiracy, as opposed to “Capitalist Enterprise”! I am sorely dissapointed in you.
I agree with 18. What the hell is an ad for Scientology doing here?
Erm, watch the full video. When standing behind the Police lines, you can clearly see his crappy old skool radio fall out of his coat, the kind not used by any Police in this country.
Meaning, he’s store security.
You lot need to re-adjust your tinfoil hats.
if you look just a bit before the moment he goes through the police barrier, it seems like if the crowd has spotted him out, and there’s a scuffle, then the police comes and he gets away …
ok, i didnt read 11, so that’s what i was trying to say!! XD
Watched the video a few times, and you really can’t tell either way.
An id is shown, but appears too small to be a warrant card.
Given this person ends up with the camera crew taking refuge by the phoneboxes, could easily be media.
As for agent privocateur, this is a crap defense. It basically says you have no free will or ability to distinguish between right and wrong to think for yourself. No court on earth would.entertain that as a defense for the thugs on Saturday.
The same thugs one of the UK uncut leadership seems to be moving towards completely destroying any claims they aren’t acting as UK uncut.
See – http://thethirdestate.net/2011/03/a-message-to-critical-uk-uncut-activists/
“What the hell is an ad for Scientology doing here?”
The advert is being delivered by GoogleAds. The fraud of Scientology pay Google to display it for them. If you click on the advert as I have just done, the fraud of Scientology pay Google even more money.
Given that this is a non-targeted advertising campaign (LC readers are unlikely to be Scientology converts), a lot of money is being wasted. Which, if you despise Scientology, is a good thing.
@ 23 UkCuts
“As for agent privocateur, this is a crap defense. It basically says you have no free will or ability to distinguish between right and wrong to think for yourself. No court on earth would.entertain that as a defense for the thugs on Saturday.”
It’s a crap defense for the rioters, but it also doesn’t say many good things at the police, assuming it actually happened. If you have a force in place to keep the peace, who will defend any harsh action on the grounds that their hands were forced by the other side, it looks pretty bad if they’re deliberately stirring up trouble on the sly.
Could have been a copper on his day off joining the march to protest against police cuts?
@24 cheers for that, so that would explain the No to AV ad and an ad for a crappy online game called desert war or something, which would of been great if LC picked there own ads, that would of be quite tactless.
@10 S. Pill, thank you
Could have been a copper on his day off joining the march to protest against police cuts?
It could have been a journalist showing his press pass. Perhaps he had his camera and notebook in his pocket.
This is a non-story. And it’s a non-issue whether the police are infiltrating campaigning groups that are hell-bent on breaking the law. That’s their job.
@Somebody (comments #11-13) thanks so much for that analysis – i had to fullscreen and watch the clip a heap of times (from 5.31) but you are completely correct; there are 4 undercover cops in this clip – not acting as agents provocateurs but playing a vital part in police manoeuvres – in this case crowd control in order to facilitate an arrest. *very* interesting!
@29 Scooby,
“This is a non-story. And it’s a non-issue whether the police are infiltrating campaigning groups that are hell-bent on breaking the law. That’s their job.”
Certainly there’s no clear evidence in the video, but it’s not a non-story. That police infiltrate groups is not in doubt, but what they do when they are under cover isn’t off-limits, especially if they cross the line into instigating criminal activity. I’m not saying that has happened here, but it certainly has happened in the past in this country and elsewhere. The borderlines between covert policing and criminality need oversight.
There were undercover police at the student demos as well. Did they provoke violence? who knows… Would the police tell the truth about it anyway? Hell no…
There’s someone with a camera pointed at that group of police just as he shows them whatever id he shows them. I don’t know if it’s a still or film camera, but if you find those shots it might give you a better idea.
I cant see why if the bloke who shows Id is a journalist why he’d been running around with his hood up like he’s part of the bloc, unless of course he’s an undercover journo
So what? ‘Twas ever thus. Police are shits. You call that news?
Certainly there’s no clear evidence in the video, but it’s not a non-story.
It is when I read it on LC, which seems to have a habit of posting innuendo about the police worthy of a sixth-former waving his first ever copy of Class War.

SO!????
Undercover Police at a demo that went violent. Wow. Shock….OOOOH! Big Brother state!
Who cares? I hope there were a few of them just like him. ‘Agent’ indeed!
Typical commie overkill.
16@ one minute someones saying that all the violence at police demos are agentprovocateur ,undercover policemen, teh next minute Bernie Grant sadi another white police man killed Keith Blakelock, I take it you felt that Grant should have been prosecuted for anti white racism for saying that ,the same Nick griffin was prosecuted for saying what he did about Lawrence,
@johnPReid
I’d lay off the wood alchohol mojitos and nail varnish remover huffing while posting, if I were you. You might then be able to post something approaching a coherent point.
You obsessive old racist.
Col Ricard Hindrance (MRS) i’m not on alcahol, why do you say I’m a riacist?
all I said was Nick Grififn was prosecuted for saying a black person killed stephen Lawrence and Bernie grant wasn’t prosecusted for saying another white polcie man Killed Keith Blakelock ,and that saying that its police who were smashing up the building in the Protest saturday is not that different form what either Grant or Griffin said ,don’t call me a racist unless your prepared to have me call Bernie grant an anti white raicst, you idiot
Sorry, Mr Incoherent Angryperson, but you don’t get to set the rules. Bernie Grant isn’t on here talking mis-spelt racist shite and you are.
Drag your remedial skin-colour obsessions onto a thread about something else entirely and I’m going to call you a racist, because that’s what you are.
And like all racists today, you haven’t even the guts to admit it. Also par for the course.
Be proud of who you are!
I know bernie grants not on here, Is it agaisnt the law to be angry, If grant was alive he could defend himself for not being a raict ,like all racists sa you sasid he denied he was one,
I won’t go onto another site, It may be off topic, but there’s not much difference for saying that it was undercover police who smashed up the shop saturday and grant for saying it was a white police man who killed keith blakelock, and it’s not racist for me to say Grant was wrong to say that it was a white policeman who killed him , Similar it’s not racist for me to say that it was wrong for Nick griffin to say another black person killed stephen Lawrence
(i state the comment about Grififn’s comments earlier about lawrence,) do you consider me an anti white racist for criticising Grififn earlier.
you idiot,
Yeah, being called an ‘idiot’ by an idiot lacks a certain impact, I’m afraid.
You’ve made your point now three times. Sadly, it is illogical bollocks and, as you admit yourself, off-topic. So what are you hoping to get out of this little display? Respect? Public acclaim? Convincing anyone else on here of your case?
Because none of those things are going to happen. You’re just a another angry semi-literate spewing crap on the internet from your fizzing little brain, like millions of others out there. Comment on the subject at hand or sod off, because nobody is interested in your race-obsession.
Good day to you.
the top on hand is its worng for people on here to say that it was under cover police that smashed the shop up,If i can prove that its wrognthen it might convince someone else and my comparison is that you can’t say that it’s someone it is clearly not doing someithing as a defence, be that Nick griffin wrongly saying that another black peroson killed stephen lawrnece what grant said or saying that it was undercover polce that smashed up the building, and if one person relasies there wasnt’any difference between what Griffin said what Grant said ,then I know I’m not a raicst, and I’ll keep on blogging’
good day to you too. sir/ madam
In ’99 the BBC was forced to pay out and apoligise to Police after they said that Roger Sylvestor’s death in Police custody was murder, he had been deemed to have died Lawfully
