Huffington Post to launch a UK version
Arianna Huffington is to launch a UK edition of the Huffington Post this summer, as the US news and current affairs website recently acquired by AOL moves to expand internationally.
The multi-millionaire, who sold Huffington Post to AOL for $315m (£195m) in February, told the MediaGuardian Changing Media Summit on Thursday that the takeover meant she could accelerate plans to hire journalists and create a UK-specific site.
Huffington Post UK will follow the same model as the US version – hiring a core team of paid writers and editors, while at the same time signing up unpaid bloggers who will have their writings showcased on the site. Huffington Post currently employs 200 writers and journalists

“Liberal Conspiracy is the UK’s most popular left-of-centre politics blog.”
uhoh….
big money crushes you… how ironic.
Just what we need: another outlet for woo.
(For those not in the know, HuffPo provides a major platform for Deepak Chopra and the anti-vaccine movement)

Actually I’m looking forward to them. They’re an aggregator and link a lot to other left blogs.
Obviously I’d prefer a big money aggregator to link across the spectrum (it is always good to know what everyone thinks, because almost everyone has a useful perspective at times), but anything that makes finding information and opinion easier (and which threatens the existing media structures) has to be good.
Equally obviously, I’ll be happily hoping for something new to come along and threaten the British Huffington Post as part of the exisitng media structure of tomorrow very soon…
Just for info:
Does this mean that they’ll expect UK writers to work for nothing as well?
After what happened to Compuserve under AOL ownership, I’m not reassured by the prospect.

That is what happened on Compuserve when AOL took it over.
I wonder if anyone would write for them for nothing. Anyone here like to contribute their work to AOL’s bottom line?

Most young writers do a substantial amount of their work for nothing now. When I did, way back in the mid-90s, it was because the mag was run by mates and they couldn’t afford to pay. Now people do it for huge companies dangling the carrot of ‘exposure’.
