Osborne’s budget eviscerated by the Mail!

Ouch! The front-page of the Daily Mail is a joy to behold.

That the newspaper didn’t fall for Osborne’s trickery not only means the honeymoon is well and truly over, but that the ‘squeezed middle’ is a bigger problem than Osborne admits.

I like how “tax cuts for millions” is seen as somehow less moral than “middle class squeezed”

Something tells me the Mail cannot fathom how to deal with a Conservative Party which is helping the low and middle income earners.

That headline strikes fear through my heart and the fear is that the Labour Party are going to move to the right again. God knows they’re not exactly showing much nous where the press are concerned.

God give me strength. All that’s happened is that the government is collecting around £6 billion less each year in income tax, and around £13 billion more in VAT – mostly from the very same people (roughly, the middle three quintiles of the income distribution), but also from millions of low-income pensioners, part-time workers, unemployed and disabled people, students, stay-at-home mums etc who don’t pay income tax.

Actually, in fairness, that’s not *all* that’s happened. Low and middle income earners with children are also losing hundreds, even thousands in tax credits. And low-income families with a child in further education are losing £1500 a year or so in EMA. And many of them will be affected by benefit cuts. And many middle-income *households* are also losing thousands in child benefit. (Nobody seems quite able to grasp the distinction between household income and individual earnings, but pretty obviously a household with one high earner on £44,000 and one low earner on £6,000, say, is a middle-income household just like the one next door in which there are two middle earners on £25,000 each.)

And this is just tax and benefit changes we’re talking about, not cuts to the services low and middle income households rely on.
