Watch: a message to IDS from Merthyr, Wales

by Newswire

Message from Merthyr is a short documentary (broadcast on the BBC last week) looking at how the 2011 benefit cuts will impact Merthyr Tydfil.

Gemma and Donna Griffiths (Two Sisters) make a 15m film about several people in their community who will suffer.

In response to Iain Duncan Smith’s comment suggesting many people in Merthyr don’t realise they can get on a bus to Cardiff to look for work, Gemma and Donna leave the Gurnos estate at 5:50am to get in to Cardiff for 8:15am, to see what jobs are going.

Well done for making a great documentary. I’m really glad it was shown on BBC – and I hope IDS watches it and gives you a response.
Why not do a longer one, and interview more people in Merthyr?
Well done!

Oh come on. What’s so special about these people that they can never be expected to move house?

Even if people moved to cities could they afford it ? it is enormously expensive to move house especially if employment is insecure and you may be out of work within a short period of time. Nothing is certain becaus the company you work for may go under. Even if everyone moved to cities this will not increase the amount of jobs avialable and unemployment can still increase and the same problems still exist. What about affordable housing for the low paid ? the list goes on.

Ian Duncan Smith only cares about Cutbacks and nothing else. We are getting to a point that people need protecting from this Coalition of Misery because it does not care and it is going to increase poverty to sickening levels and divide this country.

People do want to work and it is about time that this Coalition stops putting up a smoke screen and starts being fair and treating people with respect.

Just to add some more background information on this. BBC wales did a documentry (can’t get it on iplayer anymore) following the sisters as they tried to get IDS to watch their film. They didn’t manage to get IDS, but did get an interview with Norman Tebbit. Who modified his ‘get on your bike’ attitude to one of stating that people had to move where the work is.

Just how Ross (in the film) is expected to move given he has MS is not quite explained.

And if anyone is wondering, Donna actually has a job she fits around her education (or vice versa).

Planeshift@4

The problem is that people like Ross (in the film) will lose their home and be forced into the Gutter. The other problem is many, many, many other people that are Sick, Disabled, Vulnerable or (POOR) are going to end up in the Gutter with Ross.

Another thing to bare in mind is that there is not much affordable housing within Cities and large towns and it is my understanding that Housing Benefit was to be capped and there was a lot of talk about Thousands upon Thousands of people being forced/run out of London alone.

Ian Duncan Smith did not want to be interviewed because he has much to hide and did not want to show just how EVIL he is.

In a civilised country the Conservative party and all right-wing parties would be banned from political partcipation for being the terrorist organisations they are.

They tried that – it was called the Soviet Union…

If this is a serious comment, I despair. If it is meant to be irony, it needs a lighter touch (and some clues).

I’m convinced it’s somebody taking the mick out of sally, easiest gig in comedy though that one.

Planeshift,

Not very good though – she always calls Conservatives Tories, and would probably have included facist and or brownshirt in there somewhere. To be fair to sally, she is consistent…

Not forgetting of course, that there are 5.6 JSA claimants living in Cardiff per unfilled jobcentre vacancy.

Hi there, I’m one of the people (not BBC) who put the film together. I just want to thank you for the link and (most) of the comments you’ve made on the film. They are much appeciated. Couple of comments- Gemma has a job at MacDonalds and is a student. Donna has a young child and is a student. The BBC got involved because of an earlier film called Two Sisters, which was focused more on the experience of poverty rather than benefit cuts- you can see this on the youtube channel. There are more films on the way. Once again thanks for watching the film, and go easy.
