The Andy Coulson affair: a LOLcat reaction [updated]

No scandal can be complete with its own lolcat impressions. (for the uninitiated, they are pictures of cats with funny captions in pidgin English).

Those are good.

On a serious note, what I found sad about the whole Coulson affair was the way that lefties seemed to be anti-Coulson because he was an effective Tory spin doctor and that righties seemed to be pro-Coulson just to try and wind up lefties. The whole thing should have been about whether he was guilty or not but it become a partisan slanging match.

This is total supposition.

There’s always a partisan element to these things, but most lefties (incl me) were agin him cos he was clearly guilty as sin.

Wha?

Aside from Sy’s pertinent comment @4, there’s also the fact that while it’s one thing for a PM to allow a billionaire media oligarch to have his or her ear (though I personally find it outrageous), it’s quite another to have someone who is effectively a representative for said billionaire media oligarch in Number 10 every day.

That’s before we get on to the case itself, the cosy relationship with the Met that allowed him to skate on this for so long – let alone the ethical arguments about privacy violations.

I wasn’t anti-coulson because of his alleged effectiveness. I was anti-coulson because he was Rupert’s minion, and you don’t get to that position without being a generally nasty person.

The Indy brings out a crucial issue omitted in the discussion here so far – the failure of the Metropolitan Police to investigate emerging evidence of extensive phone hacking:

Oh, and he really wasn’t that effective. It was apparently Coulson’s call to let Clegg in on the TV debates – which completely derailed their campaign for a couple of weeks – and, despite being presented with an open goal, they failed to win an overall majority.

Worth reading this news report about how Glenn Mulcaire’s testimony squelched Coulson’s claim that apart from Goodman, the Royal editor, other editorial staff on NOW didn’t know about the phone hacking:

Errr, not quite. The fact that Coulson was Cameron’s spin-doctor was emphasised in certain sections of the press because they need to hang stories on that kind of hook. Some defenders of Coulson have tried to spin the issue as the Guardian trying to get at Cameron through Coulson (usually the same people who said “This isn’t a story! Get over it!). My concerns since the beginning, echoes by lots of commenters on this site, have been:-

- apparent criminal behaviour by large sections of the press
- the ease with which information from so-called secure data-bases was accessed
- possible police collusion in accessing this information
- lack of zeal by the Met police in pursuing the issue
- lack of zeal by the political class in pursuing the issue (to such an extent that somebody who resigned because of this issue became a top political sipn-doctor)
- an apparent fear by the police and political class of tackling unacceptable practices in poweful media groups.

Ian Burrell says in the Independent: “What was being written off as an ideologically motivated spat now has the feel of something more significant.” Whay he misses is that commenters on this site have been pointing out the wider significance since the story broke.
