Have Libdems broken electoral law in Oldham?
The Labour MP Jon Trickett has today written a letter to the cabinet secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell, asking to rule on whether Lib Dems had breached ministerial code by promoting a government announcement during Oldham and East Saddleworth campaign.
Trickett told Liberal Conspiracy:
This appears to be a clear breach of the rules surrounding how Ministers make policy announcements. Andrew Stunnell’s statement was issued by the Liberal Democrat candidate’s agent, on a Lib Dem press release, in the middle of a by-election, which appears opportunistic at best. I am yet to receive a response from Sir Gus O’Donnell but have urged him to investigate the matter immediately and I am sure he will appreciate the serious nature of the issue.
The Guardian reported earlier that in the letter to O’Donnell Trickett said:
I know that you take your role as guardian of standards for government communications very seriously and that you will be very concerned if indeed there has been a breach. I am sure that you will wish immediately to instigate a review to determine the nature of the actions taken by the minister, and any involvement by the departmental civil servants. Can you please confirm that you will indeed conduct an enquiry?
The issue has arisen after the Libdem communities minister Andrew Stunell visited Oldham armed with an announcement that highlighted government achievement.
A press release from the Communities department said:
Communities Minister and Hazel Grove’s Lib Dem MP Andrew Stunell was in Oldham Saturday with Liberal Democrat candidate Elwyn Watkins to highlight the problem of empty homes in advance of new government proposals that would help bring some properties back into use.
…
On a visit to vacant property in Springhead that has been brought back into use by the Lib Dem Council, Andrew Stunell urged local communities to work with the council to identify where empty homes are blighting the neighbourhood. The new government proposals include plans to invest £100m in bringing empty homes back into use as affordable rented housing, and making empty homes eligible for the New Homes Bonus that could see council’s benefitting from additional funding.
A Libdem spokesperson said:
No announcement was made on the campaign trail. The DCLG [department for communities and local government] announcement was given to the press on Friday embargoed until Monday morning. The visit took place on Saturday. No announcement was made on Saturday and no announcement was publicised on Saturday. Following the visit the regional Liberal Democrat group, with the approval of the DCLG, put out a press release to follow the government announcement on Monday.

This was announced back in October/November 2010 long ‘before’ the by-election was called. Perhaps Jon Trickett MP and Labour should search Hansard or google before making unfounded accusations:

One for John Rentoul then?
“The new government proposals include plans to invest £100m in bringing empty homes back into use ”
By…erm…watering down the existing powers.
Have Libdems broken electoral law in Oldham?
No, but one Lib Dem Minister might have broken the ministerial code, which is not electoral law.
Bringing empty homes back into use was anyway part of the Lib Dem general election manifesto, part of the notes on the economy. So its good news its being delivered.
“So its good news its being delivered.”
But it isn’t. The existing powers are being watered down. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12127328
Sunny? That headline?
Makes you look a little bit beyond daft. You present no evidence whatsoever that electoral law has been broken. It clearly hasn’t.
There may be a breach of the ministerial code, that looks unlikely, but that’s a different thing entirely.
Yay for accurate headlines!

Well, look at it this way George, however inaccurate the headlines here might be, at least they are less prone to stifling debate via hair-trigger moderation of comments than Lib Dem Voice; woe betide anyone there who criticises the party line!
This place is a fount of liberalism and robust debate in comparison with the control freakery exhibited on Lib Dem Voice, which despite saying welcomes debate would obviously prefer any criticism be restricted to some lout tutting, sad head shaking, and group hand sitting.
understandably tories and libdem supporters on here are starting to panic about labour consistently leading in the polls. if it carries on for much longer they’ll have more support than tories and dems together.

Hmmnnn… don’t get too carried away!
Many of us have memories that stretch all the way back to 1997 and the heady refrains of “Things Can Only Get Better”; Labour have a hell of a lot of work to do before they convince the several million former LD supporters and voters that they are worth supporting!
In the words of the old US political message: “Where’s the beef?”
If you care to look at the headline it raises a question for you to debate and draw your own conclusions jeez get over it!
@9
Clearly you rarely look at Lib Dem voice. Comments are not moderated to remove dissenting opinions. If you look on there you will quite frequently find Labour supporters attacking the Lib Dems without their comments being removed.
Perhaps you’d care to make a public apology to Lib Dem Voice?
@Galen10
If there was no question mark added then this is potentially libellous. And deliberately repeating a falsehood is no way to promote honest debate.
So not only dishonest, but a hairs bredth away from criminal.
Good on LC – there is a serious public interest in promoting a better balance of reporting.
Wow, another article where Sunny twists the truth for party political purposes.
Care to make any comment on the two Labour MPs that have or are about to be jailed for fraud?
Give them a break. They are all so unused to power they don’t know all these little rules and regulations yet (ohhhhh just pernicious red tape anyway probably. Lefty consipracy no doubt).
The Lib Dems will catch up soon and know all the rules of being in power.
Just in time for the next election when they’ll be consigned to the dump heap forever more.
Oh, sweet irony.
I think it is an utter disgrace that a campaigning properly elected person can be ejected from a meeting, “By Uniformed Police.! Acting to the whimperings of the Looney left who will not stop their stupid policies bringing this country to total ruin. There must be something very wrong when a person working on behalf of the people he lawfully represents is manhandeled and unlawfully ejected by so called law inforcement police.? God Save the rest of what is left of England from these Mad Bastards willing to see young “WHITE girls used in such a terrible Criminal Manner.?
@ 15. Tyler
I don’t think Sunny is twisting or spinning this one. When we take a closer look at the Lib-Dem track record for campaign shenanigans, not good I’m sure you’ll agree after you’ve had a read through this little lot.
