Why the assassination of Salman Taseer matters
Just a few days ago I wrote about the tensions building in Pakistan over the proposals to amend the blasphemy laws.
I mentioned in passing high profile Punjabi governor Salman Taseer who was an outspoken advocate of the reforms. He was the focus of much bile and criticism from the religious right.
Today he was murdered.
Shot by a member of his own security detail.Pakistan is in crisis.
Caught in a vice like grip between the West and the East, between democratic values of equality and tolerance and murderous religious fundamentalism.
The government is both violent, weak and split. The economy is in a poor state and much of the country is still suffering badly from flooding. These are not happy times.
Although Taseer and Shahrbano Rehman, the outstanding woman moving the amendment, are both members of the ruling party the government has been at pains to distance themselves from the proposals and, it seems, that numerous death threats against themselves and their supporters have been ignored by the authorities – leaving reformers exposed.
But while the government has taken no action against leading religious figures condemning Taseer and Rehman it seems that one man did react.
After Taseer’s guard shot his charge dead he handed himself in. “The police guard who killed him says he did this because Mr Taseer recently defended the proposed amendments to the blasphemy law. This is what he told the police after surrendering himself.”
Just a few days ago Taseer had spoken at a rally commemorating the third anniversary of the death of Benazir Bhutto at the hands of an assassin.
There are strong forces for progress in Pakistan, but they have a huge mountain to climb. Meanwhile, good and principled people like Taseer are dying.

That’s so depressing. One can hardly expect people – however brave and principles – to stand up for what they believe as bullets whizz above them.
Woah.
It is desperately sad that this man had been murdered; it will make it that much more difficult to combat the religious fascists who are doing so much to destroy freedom in Pakistan.
Al Jezeera news-site reports:
“Moreover, religious leaders in Pakistan are not likely to condemn Taseer’s killing.
In the hours immediately following the killing, television anchors hosted several shows where guests, while stopping short of openly supporting the killing of Taseer, did speak out in support of killing those deemed to have blasphemed.”
and
“it was not Taseer’s brash, often confrontational, approach to politics that led to his death on Tuesday… Taseer had taken a vocal stand in support of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who was recently sentenced to death by a Pakistani court, following her conviction for blasphemy.”
If the religious extremists who consider themselves the guardians of the Prophet’s (PBUH) honour can go so far as to take the life of someone who opposed man-made laws, then society is heading for anarchy and barbarism. This means that there is no space for a rational discourse and even a person of such high profile as the Governor Punjab cannot escape their wrath. It also speaks of the weakness in the security regime of the Punjab government.
The Punjab government is responsible for the provision of security to all VIPs in the province. It is strange that a person with such extremist inclinations as Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri was deployed in the governor’s security detail. These members of Virtue Brigade cannot dare do these things in Saudi Arabia which is the bastion of Islam. The Punjab government cannot absolve itself of part of the blame for this murder. Its call for a judicial inquiry has yet to be responded to by the federal government, which has so far set up an inter-agency investigation team to look into all aspects of the assassination, including whether the assassin acted alone or a deeper conspiracy was at work.

It does seem like the Pakistani authorities have a lot to answer for, in this as in many other matters. Sadly, this is hardly a new phenomenon; as a state it appears avowedly sectarian. It is now apparent that any minority, whether Christian, atheist, secular, Hindu or even some Muslim sect the wing nuts disapprove of, is fair game for many fanatics within Pakistan.
Much as I hated George Bush Jnr., you do have to wonder if the the answer to his question about whether the Pakistani’s were with us or against us was actually “against” for many of them.
God save Pakistan.

It’s faith in supernatural phenomenon that has, in large part, gotten Pakistan into the sorry mess it finds itself now.
The failure to protect the rights of minorities, and acquiescence in the face of religious demands to murder blasphemers, apostates, unbelievers or any others their made up religion doesn’t much like the look of, suggest that religious faith is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
This is only indicative of the rot that’s set into the ideological/political system of Pakistan. Unfortunately a lot of these people know what is best for their country but true power does not lie in their so-called democracy, but in the hands of people who least deserve it – the army and religious crazies who have delusional ideas about world domination. R.I.P. Mr. Taseer.
Cheer on my friends! Cheer on the assassin! Smile and clap your hands, chant odes to the ghazi’s bravery! Go ahead, applaud the darkness that is coming your way, because once it has taken you into its embrace, there’ll be no cheer left in your life.
There are strong forces for progress in Pakistan,
This is wishful thinking. Such forces are at best a tail trying to wag a dog.
THE HUMBLE REQUEST TO ALL, PLEASE DO YOUR EFFERTS.
Worried… Pakistan’s condition economically is not really stable and every day the Government imposes new
Things, such activities may cause more damage…
Where is “Independent Judiciary”?
What Opposition’s roll in Government?
What our Media are doing?
What is Pak Army thinking?
You people known well that our Government took Foreign loans in 3-years are more than the previous Governments took in 60-years and nowadays State Bank of Pakistan are printing currency notes Rupee 2,000,000,000 daily to support the Government?
We are not bankrupt country but our Leaders made us. Ask them to bring their foreign assets and Bank accounts in to Pakistan and will see the change also en-force the following for everyone from top to bottom.
There are many steps but in my opinions, the first simple steps to be followed without any delay.
1. A-Z Government’s officials are prohibited to keep account/assets in foreign countries. Those already having such, must transfer into Pakistan, otherwise resign.
2. A-Z Government’s officials are prohibited to establish/run any Industry and/or Trade otherwise resign.
3. No one can take part in Election, who having dual nationality, foreign residency, foreign assets, foreign Bank Account/s and/or any Industry/trade etc.
4. A undertaking from each participant of Election, Non having as stated in no.3, even Never thinks about, otherwise all National plus Foreign assets will be taken by Pakistan Government and no case will be lodged.
5. Pakistan Visa must be same requirements/condition and even Fee as the applicant’s Country.
6. Prohibited land/property to be sold other than Pakistan Nationals.
7. 1-Province to makes unity for all languages (Pakistanis) also to minimize the Government expense instead Of 4-provinces.
8. Invite Pakistanis expatriates to make investment in the country with 100% guarantee them that their accounts not be frozen as in past. This is very important.
God Bless Pakistan…
