Who is behind the porn-block campaign?

In an article on Ed Vaizey’s attempt to restrict web porn, the BBC extensively quotes Ms Miranda Suit.
She is described as co-chair of Safer Media, which “campaigns to make media safe for children”.
Ms Suit cited a report compiled by the US conservative think tank The Witherspoon Institute which suggested that easy access to pornography was damaging some young people.
“Children are becoming addicted in their teens to internet pornography,” she said. “They are being mentally damaged so they cannot engage in intimate relationships.”
Safer Media backed the government call to block pornography “at source”, said Ms Suit.
“What we are talking about is censorship to protect our children,” she said.
Who is Ms Suit?
Well, intrepid reader Sugar The Pill sent us a link to this page which shows Ms Suit previously stood as a candidate for the Christian People’s Alliance.
Want to know more? Here are her views:
We must not forget the influence of the media: it needs much stronger regulation so that our young people are not constantly conditioned by violent films, video games and lyrics; pornography must be outlawed so that it cannot undermine marriage and the dignity of women and encourage sex crime. All schools should teach Christian values.
In 2000 co-founded Mediamarch, a peaceful protest group “seeking stronger obscenity laws and restoration of basic decency to all media”.
And now she has co-founded Safer Media, which has come out nowhere to be extensively quoted everywhere by the media. This is the BBC’s idea of balance.
Compare that to the other side of the debate, the Open Rights Group, which has thousands of supporters and years of experience in evidence based campaigning.
It doesn’t even look like it has a website and Ms Suit’s full views aren’t disclosed anywhere either.

This woman may seem a bit of a busybody, but since she seems to limit her concern to stopping children being exposed to porn – seems to me that’s no big deal. No one wants kids looking at hard core stuff on the net or anywhere else. Censorship only begins where they start setting controls on what adults want to do with their leisure time.
The fact is that teens can go now into many good highstreet bookstores in Britain and often buy shelf copies of John Cleland: Fanny Hill, DH Lawrence: Lady Chatterley’s Lover, James Joyce: Ulysses, Anaïs Nin: Delta of Venus or Pauline Reage: The Story of O. The curious thing is that some adults are so abysmally ignorant about literature that they don’t understand this.
The purpose of this conference is to sensitise those in authority to the link between violent media content and violent behaviour, particularly among young people. If you cannot attend please invite your Member of Parliament.
Speakers include:
Kieth Vaz MP
Professor Kevin Browne, University of Liverpool
Brian Moore, Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police
Keith Bakker, founder of the first Clinic for Video game addicts
Robert Prendergast, Joint Director of Urban Mission
Louise Brown from Christian Care for Our Nation.
This event is sponsored by Nadine Dorries MP and organised by Pippa Smith and Miranda Suit, founders of mediamarch.
I will say, though, that Ms Suit sounds like a good, if misguided, woman. She probably just got pissed with all the porn that comes up when one googles her name…
Keith bloody Vaz, I just new he would be in there somewhere….as well as Dorries. The brand new puritans.

So: films, video games and music are in her firing line, and she wants ‘Christian values’ (which ones? bigotry? homophobia? intolerance?) to be taught in schools… It’s not just “stopping children being exposed to porn” – that’s quite a list.
Fortunately most people adopt the correct response, which is to laugh the 18th century moralising self-righteous would-be crusader out of the room.
Having recently configured my parent’s laptop with security software to stop my younger brother from accessing materials he’s too young to view, I’d say that the onus should be put on parents to protect their kids. Y’know, parenting.
The software works (and it’s from a well-known security provider). It could be circumvented, but if a child is capable of doing that, then them viewing porn will the the least of a parent’s troubles.
Notice how these people always hide behind the children.
But the same busy bodies do not think it is that important that the children have good health care.
See: Casablanca. I’m shocked, shocked, that this dreadful specimen turns out to be a religious nut too…
I wrote a column yesterday detailing the House of Commons debate that this whole story seems to emanate from, including the highly dubious ‘evidence’ from the Safermedia pressure group and the distorted statistics used by Claire Perry MP to validate the arguments she put to Ed Vaizey. http://foxsoup.tumblr.com/post/2391666036/weasel-words-and-untruths-behind-the-porn-ban
The notion that the views of a religious pressure group can be cited in a House of Commons debate as hard fact is extremely worrying.
Is there a more obnoxious, authoritarian, wrong-on-every-occasion busy-body in the UK than Keith fucking Vaz?
What Suit and Vaz demonstrate is that the more pressing political conflict in this country isn’t between Left and Right but between religiously motivated authoritarians and secular libertarians of either Left or Right.
I’m with Shatterface on this one.
Especially since the only practical outcome will be that more people will figure out how to beat internet controls. Trying to control the internet is pretty much a Cnut-like experience at the best of times.
Is there a more obnoxious, authoritarian, wrong-on-every-occasion busy-body in the UK than Keith fucking Vaz?
Dorries? Close run thing though…
Start with the violent video games which are probably more damaging.
Nah, violent video games are fine. This is what we have ratings systems for.
Start with voting this daft theocrat out of office. Where’s our promised right of return, eh?
@13: “Start with the violent video games which are probably more damaging.”
Absolutely. As best I can tell, the only possible merit of the umpteen shoot-em up video games is that these provide a socially valuable cathartic exercise for potential homicidal psychopaths. By comparison, much porn is probably relatively harmless.
With the soaring costs to students of financing higher education studies, young women are exploiting their sex as a means of raising funds. This is true not just of Belle de Jour and the author of: Confessions of a Working Girl (Penguin Books, 2007) but also of this enterprising New Zealand student who auctioned her virginity over the internet to fund her tuition fees:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/3286794/Teen-sells-virginity-for-45-000-online
Live sex-shows on Japan’s commercial TV networks are notorious among visitors. There’s one retrievable on the web – which I won’t post a link to – showing a large, excited audience of teen girls cheering on a live show conducted as theatre in the round or in a sumo wrestling match arena, presumably so the whole audience could get a good view of proceedings and to facilitate audience participation – I joke not. I would like to know of evidence showing what harm TV programmes like this have done in Japan.
Wouldn’t it be great if politicians required evidence of harm before they acted?
Apparently all they need is some moral panic.
C.
We have the same problem here in Australia. The biggest push for net censorship here comes from the Australian Christian Lobby. This organisation is led by one Jim Wallace, former Aussie SAS officer. Somehow he thinks killing people is fine but peeking at naked people is just wrong.
Can someone invent a religion filter so all TV and internet traffic can be cleaned up and we are no longer subject to mythology and fantasy masquarading as history ?
I suspect that some commercial producers of pornographic videos on the web might actually favour internet porn filters for much the same commercial reasons that some movie producers seek R18 certificates from boards of censors for their movies as badges of authenticity for discerning viewers.
In the news, there’s a report that Ireland is about to close down its infamous list of banned books, which had included such illustrious titles as Aldous Huxley: Point Counter Point, and Graham Greene: The end of the affair.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/12/20/irish_book_censorship_laws_to_ease/
I’m a bit puzzled as to why those who want to install porn filters on the internet aren’t also campaigning to ban books like DH Lawrence: Lady Chatterley’s Lover, John Cleland: Fanny Hill or Pauline Reage: The Story of O, all once banned but which now can be bought now off the shelves in many good bookstores. And I cherish nostalgic memories of the notorious trial of Penguin Books in 1960 for publishing Lady Chatterley’s Lover. How we laughed when the chief prosecutor, Mervyn Griffith-Jones, asked if it were the kind of book “you would wish your wife or servants to read”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Chatterley's_Lover
We shouldn’t be too complacent. Remember Mary Whitehouse, another self-appointed God-bothering densor, whose ‘National Viewer’s and Listener’s Association’ wielded a baleful influence out of all proportion to the size of its membership. She managed to get Dr Who neutered!!
I’m astonished at some visual scenes in movies on DVD which can be easily purchased from online retailers where the R18 rating is a fairly dependable indicator of authentic content, I’ve found. And that’s the function a porn filter for the internet will turn out to have. The big downside is that it will be costly to administer and that cost will simply be passed on by the ISPs to their regular subscribers.
Oh dear! Most people commenting on this are more concerned with Suit’s religious credentials, as if that’s worse than the availability of porn to kids. This kind of liberalism is a sham that justifies child and women abuse in porn, and you lot are just anti-religion instead of anti-porn. Pathetic self justification for your own porn-addiction. Your own words condemn you. You are a laughing stock to yourselves and you know it.
Yes, I’m sure the good citizens of Ireland will be at acute risk of pervasive corruption when the likes of Aldous Huxley’s Point Counter Point and Graham Greene’s The End of the Affiar are no longer banned books in Ireland.
OTOH as for the guidance of religion on the path of true virtue:
“A damning report into child abuse in the Dublin archdiocese has criticised the Catholic Church hierarchy for covering up the abuse.
“The report investigated how Church and state authorities handled allegations of child abuse against 46 priests.
“It found that the Church placed its own reputation above the protection of children in its care.”
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8381119.stm
“An inquiry into child abuse at Catholic institutions in Ireland has found church leaders knew that sexual abuse was ‘endemic’ in boys’ institutions.”
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8059826.stm
Richard DM @ 22,
Are you a parent? Do you know that you can control internet content on your home computer, right now? Do you know how easy it is to do? In fact, not even you have to be tempted by it.
If so, why are you saying nonsense like this:
It is interesting that the godly can’t control their own offsprings viewings and assume that the state should do it instead.
On that account alone, don’t worry as the door out bangs your arse.
Porn needs to be outlawed so it cannot “undermine marriage”?
So in other words just because some marriages break up because a wife got pissed off when she found her husband was looking at porn instead of having sex with her everyone else should be stopped from looking at it?
Great!
Safer Media are an off shot group from Mediawatch-uk (formely the National Viwers and Listeners Assocation and they used to be called Mediamarch.
They are essentially moral imposition lobbiests who seek to restore Christian “values” to our nation.
Their opposition to porn is a purely moral one and has nothing to do with protecting women or children. They believe that looking at sex is immoral and dirty and believe that those who do it should be stopped by law.
Indeed former Mediawatch director John C Beyer adovocated locking up adults who are in posession of R18 rated material for three years.
If we are to apply the widely respected rules of evidence-based policy and the precautionary principle, we would be proscribing the Catholic Church:
Sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church are proof that that “the Devil is at work inside the Vatican”, according to the Holy See’s chief exorcist.
Father Gabriele Amorth, 85, who has been the Vatican’s chief exorcist for 25 years and says he has dealt with 70,000 cases of demonic possession, said that the consequences of satanic infiltration included power struggles at the Vatican as well as “cardinals who do not believe in Jesus, and bishops who are linked to the Demon”.

We certainly shouldn’t have allowed a state visit by the Pope earlier this year which conferred a thin veneer of respectability on what is incontrovertibily a corrupt institution to judge by the mounting evidence from many countries.
So universal is the corruption inflicted by the Catholic Church that there is a growing case for taking this issue to the United Nations or the International Criminal Court in the Hague in order to make church sponsored paedophilia a crime of universal jurisdiction IMO.
“It doesn’t even look like it has a website…”
Safer Media / Media March’s website: http://www.mediamarch.org.uk/welcome.htm
easily found.
If the intention really is to protect the innocent young from corruption and abuses, we should start by looking to emulate King Harry’s way – the Dissolution of the Monasteries:
“At the beginning of the 16th century monasteries owned well over a quarter of all the cultivated land in England. Farmers who rented land from the monks often criticized them for being greedy and uncaring landlords. It was also claimed that the monks had been corrupted by the wealth obtained from renting their land. . . ”
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/TUDmonasteries.htm
A recent TV news programme:
“A Channel 4 News investigation reveals that more than half of the Catholic priests convicted for child abuse and sentenced to more than a year in prison, in England and Wales since 2001, remain in the priesthood – with some still receiving financial support from the Church and living in church houses.”
