“Lost” hacking emails under investigation

by Newswire

The privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has launched an investigation into claims that vital emails between senior executives and journalists on the News of the World have been “lost” while being transported to India, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.

Experts fear the missing emails – on computer hard disk drives that have reportedly vanished – could have major implications for the multiple investigations into claims the newspaper was involved in widespread hacking into the phone messages of targets from the worlds of politics, royalty and entertainment.

The investigation will add to mounting pressure on Andy Coulson, press secretary to the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and a former editor of the News of the World. Coulson, who denies any knowledge of the hacking, resigned from his post after Clive Goodman, the paper’s former royal correspondent, was convicted of hacking the phones of Prince William’s aides.

The latest investigation comes just days after lawyers acting for the actress Sienna Miller lodged a document at the High Court in London, saying they had found new evidence that would justify bringing prosecutions against other journalists from the Rupert Murdoch-owned paper.

Trouble is, if the objective is to pin Coulson, this story is not going anywhere is it? The original court case, a Select Committee, Met investigations, CPS, New York Times, ex NOTW journalists who will not give evidence in court, the Sheridan trial, Judicial Review( what has happened to that by the way?), now an Information Commissioners Office investigation. What’s the betting that gets nothing on Coulson either – just like all the others. The other thing is that nobody in the big wide world gives a damn. We all know all newspapers get up to no good in their search for stories, the world has moved on since the first court case and the longer this goes on the less anybody cares.

@1. You may be right in relation to Coulson not being charged with anything with regards to this matter but I disagree thst no one gives a damn. This potentially reflects on the judgement of the British Priminister and the influence Murdoch exerts in our politics and the independence and competency of the Met Police so I think until there is a definitive answer the story will run.

@2 What is the definitive answer you seek? My point is that NOTW journalists engaged in phone hacking, one, plus a PI, went to jail. There were probably more involved but so far no hard evidence. Who gave the orders? so far no hard evidence. Without hard evidence this cannot go anywhere. It cannot get at Murdoch, it cannot get at Cameron (otherwise it would have done so by now), and do not forget Gordon Brown rang Coulson after his resignation to express his best wishes. The only way it can go anywhere is by getting Coulson – and my original post stands. There is no sign of that.

The investigation will add to mounting pressure on Andy Coulson…

Yeah, whatever. Andy Coulson must be in an isobaric chamber, given how much the pressure on him has mounted since the Guardian (and LibCon) started this routine two years ago. Dead. Horse. Flogged.

Crystal ball gazing does not advance your arguement! The only way to find out is a thorough investigation and to subpoena witnesses to give evidence in court then you at least a chance of obtaining “hard evidence”. Carpet. Swept. Under !
