Some people have been wondering which universities and colleges have been in occupation recently. I visited a few last week, and on my travels I heard mentions of at least 45 others – a list which I’ve posted randomly below.

Disclaimer: I haven’t verified them all, and many of them aren’t in occupation any longer.

Do email me (or post below) if there are any glaring errors or omissions. The Edinburgh occupation has got an updated list of the still ongoing occupations with their websites and Twitter feeds.

What was achieved?

Man Met students joined the Manchester occupation, we came out on 11th Dec. Great list!

“which universities and colleges have been in occupation”

Can’t we just say “occupied”?

Or perhaps more accurately: which universities and colleges have had one small area self-indulgently occupied for a short time?

49 universities – that’s some claim.

Although I then notice that you include several places I am pretty sure are not universities. Leominster for example is in Herefordshire, a county which famously has no further education facilities. Dursley is in fact not a university either (isn’t it the name of Harry Potter’s aunt and uncle, who would be mighty upset by a student occupation, even if it was by muggles…).

And Camden School for Girls – there may be a clue in the name there, because universities generally are not single sex (what do you mean the clue is the word school? ;) ).

Also, the University of Birmingham ‘occupation’ lasted for about twelve hours, in a public space (where I was offered cake if I hated fees as I walked through, producing the greatest moral dilema I’ve ever faced). The last protest at Birmingham featured a maximum of twenty-five (very cold) students. I guess many of the other actions were equally short-lived.

So there has been action on at least 49 sites, but on the evidence above this was not 49 universities (I quickly counted 41, going with convention of the London Colleges being counted seperaterly). This means over half the universities in the UK have not reported action, and there has been generally small amounts of action outside the major protests. I am quite surprised by this – I would assume the figures would be better. Perhaps the list is incomplete?

So was this one or two occupations – I am getting confused…

Isn’t it the Christmas holidays? What’s the point of occupying empty buildings?

October 1917 this is not.

Leominster University? Don’t take the piss. Leominster is a market town full of hard-working people – particularly east europeans who do the work which the grandiose future bright sparks of the “knowledge economy” would not sully their delicate hands with. Somebody’s got to do it – but not Brits. The very thought of it!

Brighton Uni had quite a significant occupation going on!

http://brightonresistance.wordpress.com/

It’s currently suspended

You missed out Lincoln where the occupation is ongoing. I should know, I was there last weekend. They’re meeting with the vice-chancellor as I type to discuss their demands.

fyi Newcastle has ended it’s occupation: http://ncluniocc.blogspot.com/

These occupations. Making it BIG TIME in the media, aren’t they? What exactly are they achieving? Apart from wasting taxpayers’ money, that favourite hobby of the Left

Move along. Nothing to see here. What is splendid is to see anarchist rioting for more state intervention. That’s a good one. And students demo’ing against making it easier and cheaper for poorer kids to go to Uni. Another good one. Impressive logic. Not. Indeed, too stupid to GO to University. At least, one worthy of the name.

@13

I think the Daily Mail forums are that way —->

Bath University had a 2-day sit-in leading up to the vote, incl. comedy stunts like bagpipes playing outside the VC’s office on the hour every hour.

I presume the culprits have now been arrested and charged with crimes against humanity? :)

“You missed out Lincoln”

LOL

Given that the average student does the square root of bugger all anyway, I’m suprprised anyone noticed they were “sitting in”. Haven’t they all gone back to the suburbs for christmas with mater and pater anyway ?

19. Jeremy Poynton

Mr S. Pill

Not a fan of free speech, eh?. Look – most of the country has no idea that these sit-ins are going on, nor, I think care. Nothing to see here. Move along.

@watchman

It’s universities, and colleges (as it says in the intro!).

I like how ironic it is that right-wingers are coming on to this thread specifically to read and post that all this is important and not worth commenting on. Eejits.

Yes, S. Pill, stop throwing poor Jeremy in the gulag of criticism!

Aye. While I’ve come around the the right’s way of thinking on fox hunting, I remember how pathetic it was listening to them bleating that debating the issue in the House of Commons was a waste of valuable time. Well, stop debating it then!

And then they wonder why they can’y get jobs when they leave university.

Deluded, look at me I’m special, toddlers masquerading as intelligent beings.

Do grow up
