Tory MEP wastes tax money on denial ads

by Sunny Hundal

The Conservative MEP Roger Helmer is a well known global warming denier. He is also a critic of spending any taxpayer money that educates people about the issue.

He recently unveiled this poster campaign:

The billboards can be viewed by the citizens of Derby, Leicester, Northampton, Lincoln and Nottingham – in Helmer’s East Midlands constituency.

So where did the money for the £9000 billboard campaign come from?

The Guardian’s Leo Hickman did some digging:

I’m told that the “information fund” of the European Conservative and Reformist Group, of which all the Conservative MEPs are members, has covered the costs.

Indeed, each poster carries the ECR logo, as the rules of the funding allocation demands. Another call to the ECR’s office in Brussels confirms that the group – as is the case with all seven of the EU parliament’s political groups – is entirely funded by the parliament.

So, what we appear to have is a Conservative MEP who, as a TaxPayers’ Alliance supporter, likes nothing more than complaining about how the EU loves wasting taxpayers money, using just such a source of funding to buy prime advertising space to promote his own pet beliefs and theories.

What a hypocrite.

Roger Helmer has previously been in the news for claiming that homophobia is a “propaganda device”.

He has also hosted conferences denying global warming, which headlined speakers who were paid to deny the effects of passive smoking.

I’m sure the Rich Taxpayers Alliance will get right on it, Oh wait……………..

As a matter of interest, how should Mr Helmer (I wrote Helmand there – freudian slip?) be using his communication allowance then?

Personally I’d be happy to see such allowances cut, but if Mr Helmer wants to communicate with his constinuents using his obviously existing allowance, fair play to him.

I assume someone else will have to launch a counter-campaign now, and this will be discussed and considered by people. As things should in a democracy…

PS Is ‘certainly ineffectual’ the worst slogan on a political billboard since ‘are you thinking what we are thinking’?

@ 3

Who said that, and were they really so uptight as to not contract “we are”?

“denial ads”?

Where’s the global warming denial? I can only see an attack on the policies, not the theory.

Watchman @ 3 – Is “certainly ineffectual” the worst slogan on a political billboard since, ” Are you thinking what we are thinking?”

No comparison; – one is just an inept assertion – the other is a calculated, insidious subliminal message that cleverly infers what they would never have dared to utter plainly and openly. Oh and it also allows them to claim indignantly that they didn’t mean that at all. Yeah right – It doesn’t need a ton of bricks to fall on all of us – we know the way their minds work.

‘Roger Helmer has previously been in the news for claiming that homophobia is a “propaganda device”. ‘

I loved his justification for that. Clearly because ‘phobia’ literally translates to fear, when used as an English word it COULDN’T POSSIBLY mean anything at all different.

That, children, is what happens when one mistakes etymology for definition. Hmmph.

Presumably one could never call a wooden structure ‘dilapidated’ because, in Latin, ‘lapis’ means stone?

Anyway, this man seems a moron.

Seems like your typical tory pillock.

Sunny – How can you defend the use of taxpayers money to “educate” people about the issue. If they want information it’s hardly difficlut to find and since when was the government responsible for scientific (as opposed to the political) “education” of the general population. Its wasting money on shite like this that the coallition were elected to stop

@ 7 “Phobia” is actually defined as an irrational or heightened sense of fear to a non threatening stimulus. Hence a fear of heights is vertigo rather than “height phobia” (as a fear of heights is entirely rational), whereas a fear of gay people is arguably irrational and is hence a phobia.

As opposed to all the man-made global warming rent seekers wasting tens of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money?

“As opposed to all the man-made global warming rent seekers wasting tens of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money?”

I think you’ll find its a hundred billions dollars actually, then George Monboit puts his little finger to his mouth…

@10 Fear of heights isn’t vertigo, it’s acrophobia. Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness caused by, among other things, acrophobia.

14. Cynical/Realist?

@13 – damn, you beat me! Vertigo is something you’ll get most commonly at ground level, or lying in bed. I promise I knew this before last week’s QI though – my Grandma suffers a lot with Vertigo, and she’s well past going near any kind of height!

Look at the numbskull’s blog: http://rogerhelmermep.wordpress.com/ – Union Jack background, “STRAIGHT TALKING” strap line – it’s like a parody of a xenophobic Little Englander.

~~~
I left this on his blog – http://rogerhelmermep.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/cancun-climate-conference-cancelled-for-lack-of-interest/#comment-5859 – duplicate here in case it gets deleted:
> But when I go out of my way to warn constituents about the huge costs of renewable energy imposed on them by Brussels diktat, I get vilified by the left-wing press. I must be doing something right.
Or it could be simply that you are completely wrong and determinedly ignorant – in the exact same way you are re. climate science, homophobia and whatever else you hold forth on.
“STRAIGHT TALKING” – isn’t that how Dubya and Caribou Barbie refer to themselves? It appears to be a term used as self-congratulation by those who don’t need evidence, science and reality to reach conclusions.
Straight-talking = I don’t like the facts so I’ve brought my own?
Oh dear Matt Monro @ 9 “It’s wasting money on shite like this that the coalition were elected to stop.”
The coalition were elected then – were they? Did they stand as an Alliance at the election then? I think you’ll find they were cobbled together by Tory / Lib Dem dickey dealers after no party could form an over-all majority -after the democratic process had fizzled out in a hung parliament – elections had very little to do with the formation of this government, still less a popular mandate.
The European Conservative and Reformist Group is formed of extreme right wing parties from eastern europe with links to gangsters and national-front type groups. This is the tories mistress they sleep with every night and love, the Lib-Dems are the respectable wife for social occasions and ignored at all other times.
Jaeren @18 – yes indeed – although the analogy holds up only so far – the LIb Dems are hardly analogous to a respectable wife in the traditional ‘love, honour and obey’ sense – that particular poor downtrodden soul doesn’t seem to be able to agree amongst her own many-split personalities as to who or what it is her true devotion is for – power we might have thought until the weaker vessel’s debacle of this week – now mutual destruction seems to be the giddy aim. How like a spurned-but-powerless spouse.
