Our new website – False Economy – goes live
The new cuts campaign website has gone live today.
The TUC is a strong supporter, and we have been working with a group of local campaigners and on-line activists for the last few months, to make it a reality.
I’ve got the first blog post on the site setting out in more detail what the site is all about.
The site is encouraging people to post information about cuts, provide testimony about their effects, link up and help local campaigns and make the case for alternative routes to deficit reduction.
We are particularly proud of the launch video featuring Sam West.
FalseEconomy has no pretensions about being a new organisation or providing leadership to the campaign against the cuts.
Instead it recognises that the campaign is developing as a bottom-up grass-roots campaign. I seem to remember writing sometime after the general election that while that had not turned into the internet election that many had predicted, it may well be that the campaign against the government’s cuts would be the first great UK internet campaign.
The way the student and anti-tax avoidance protests have snowballed (to use a topical weather analogy) in the last few weeks demonstrates that potential.
That’s not to say that more formal organisations (rather like the stuffy old TUC) no longer have a place. Indeed False Economy may be where this comes together with the new campaigning.
We have always said that the strength of the cuts campaign will depend on its ability to build the broadest possible alliance against the cuts programme. That will mean working with all kinds of formal organisations (as we did at the rally on the eve on the Spending Review) and will do so at the March for the Alternative in March.
But it will also mean recognising that the kind of informal and spontaneous campaigning that social media make possible is now a permanent part of national life.

Are you also going to provide alternative positions to be cut?
If not, are you mentioning who should be taxed or who should pay back the debt?
So you’re trying to scare people about the possibility of increased crime through police cuts? I thought the left were against more police and more prisons?
You can have as many little girls on your videos as you like, but the Robin Hood Tax does not work.
@2
Explain to me why the Robin Hood Tax does not work?
@1
I think you misunderstand the nature of this website, from what I can tell it is more of an ideas hub for people who are against the cuts to share different ways of fighting them as well as providing a means for people to discuss alternatives – as opposed to the old stratagem of telling people that X should happen instead of Y, it enables people to say well what about W or Z?
That’s how I see it anyway.
@2
Do you think that crime will decrease when people are made homeless, made poorer, made redundant, as well as having police cuts? Really?
Ah. Good name.
So you’re trying to scare people about the possibility of increased crime through police cuts? I thought the left were against more police and more prisons?
Anti-cuts ? pro-expansion.
On the other hand, I’m not against judicious cuts to tha police. Which laws should go first? Leaving minor bigots to their own devices would be good. Oh, and drugs reform would save plenty o’ cash. Ms May? Er — Ms May?
@6
Drugs reform would create lots of cash… the taxman is missing out on a huge potential goldmine.
Put the video on youtube, then launch an appeal for donations and put it on TV. during Coronation Street with the text:
“Given that 90% of MPs went to university, mostly without having to pay tuition fees, it’s completely unacceptable that the Tories and Lib Dems are getting away with this.”

That’s a surprisingly decent video – one of the view (about the cuts, and shit) that I believe would actually encourage people to sit up and take notice.
I’d change the last scene, though.

What good would legalising drugs do? OK, save police time, generate billions of pounds, cut off a major source of revenue for criminal gangs, reduce deaths due to badly cut heroin, encourage addicts to seek help without fear of arrest, and stop people being criminalised for doing something that harms no one but themselves… but apart from that, what good would it do?
Incidentally, someone once tried to convince me that legalising drugs would be a bad idea because it would create a black market for narcotics…
False Economy, eh? I’m expecting some serious analysis showing how cuts will fail to save money in the long run.
Hahaha, yeah right. I’m expecting hysterical anti-cuts messages that tell me that every public job loss is a disaster for the economy, unless it’s a vanity photographer that is.
Cracking video. Spot on. Good to see the campaigns against economy destroying cuts gaining momentum.
Just another boring attack site, doesn’t really add anything new does it, how much did you pay the developers and designers to create it by the way>
This site appears to have only one objective; “Reject And Oppose all Cuts”
