The commentary on Twitter is a fantasic cross-section of Britishness. Add your own two-line couplets, crowdsourced or composed, in the comments.

#RoyalWedding, #RoyalWedding
Look how quick the news is spreading

I’m really pleased for Kate and Will
But will the tax payers foot the bill?

Gawd bless’ em, *reach for tissues*
Newspapers plan their special issues

Al Q’aida rubbing hands with glee
I’ll do the photos for a reasonable fee.

Middleton to marry some balding toff
But do you think we get a day off?

Twitter is in meltdown. Just don’t get it.
Frankly I just don’t give a shit

China plate makers at the ready!
Oh I do hope it will be on the telly

Ooo Ooo! Whoop! WOOHOOs!
Today is a good day to bury bad news.

Re burying bad news: See paulwaugh

That said I wouldn’t put it past the government to slip some more bad news out. I hope they don’t though, I find such behaviour distasteful regardless of who’s in power.

As for the wedding, there will be the inevitable unpleasant sneering from sections of the left who think the monarchy is some form of oppression. They are welcome to sit in the corner and make snide comments while the rest of us celebrate.

“As for the wedding, there will be the inevitable unpleasant sneering from sections of the left who think the monarchy is some form of oppression.”

What about those of us on the left and the right who just think the monarchy is an embarrassing waste of money? It’s rather unfair of you to suggest that everyone on the right is a monarchist, BTW. I doubt the idea is very popular among libertarians, for example.

1

Because of course there are no republicans on the right or in the centre of the politcal spectrum?

If you are another forelock tugging Monarchist, go right ahead and have a ball: just don’t complain when the large numbers of us who don’t give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut about the whole crew point and laugh.

Bread and Circuses…… Bread and Circuses

Keep the public distracted, as you rob them blind.

I’m so happy I could shit.

‘They are welcome to sit in the corner and make snide comments while the rest of us celebrate.’

That’s very kind of you but I bet when we do start sneering you forget that warm welcome and stary bitching.

Bury bad news? Like taking £900m of NHS services out of public ownership?

http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/MediaCentre/Pressreleases/DH_121692

The government’s plan (it’s in the NHS White paper) is for this to happen to the *entire* NHS. All hospitals will be taken out of public ownership by 2015.

Huh? Is there a problem posting comments here?

The libertarian solution would be to cut off the public subsidy and let the monarchy keep the revenue from crown lands.

And yes there are republicans on the right but I find far more anti-monarchist contents on LibCon than ConHome for example.

So two people I don’t know and am never likely to meet are getting married and I’m meant to get really excited? My cousin got married last year, I don’t remember anyone not directly connected to the event giving a monkies.

I wish them good luck and every success in their marriage, exactly the same as I wish every other couple, straight or gay, embarking on the same between now and the over-hyped day next year.

I’m now off to stick my head in a bucket for approximately 10 months.

“The libertarian solution would be to cut off the public subsidy and let the monarchy keep the revenue from crown lands.”

I doubt it. Under a libertarian system I suspect the royal family would find themselves with less revenue than that. You’ve also missed the vital point that any true libertarian would remove the monarch’s status as head of state.

“And yes there are republicans on the right but I find far more anti-monarchist contents on LibCon than ConHome for example.”

Well yes, you would. It just seemed mean of you to label all right-wingers are slavish followers of an irrational system.

@1 – “As for the wedding, there will be the inevitable unpleasant sneering from sections of the left who think the monarchy is some form of oppression…”

I’d rather listen to “unpleasant sneering” by republicans than a death rattle wheeze of collective orgasm by dust-gushing monarchists, which is all we’re going to get for the next however long…

Richard is a classic tory. He is so inadequate that he needs a surrogate family to look up to. The fact that at they are a talent less bunch of scroungers, makes it even more odd that he takes such delight in watching their lives. How much tax payers money have been spent on teaching Will to fly? And what is the point because if war comes we are told by the Royal toadies that he can’t possibly be put in harms way. Talk about the something for nothing society.

But I feel sorry for Richard that he has no meaning in his own life that he needs this cartoon like family with their idiotic uniforms and soviet like medals to look up to. Get a life Richard.

Chaise,

I am not aware of any particular link between libertarianism and republicanism – indeed it is arguable that libertarianism is better suited to constitutional monarchy that it is to a republican democracy (that irritating will of the people thing…). There is of course a strand of libertarian thought that would deny the monarchy and try to deconstruct the royal family’s personal estates, but they are frankly the ones in the cross-over zone with anarchists.

And, on a totally different level of thought, I sometimes wonder if the best right-wing argument for a republic is the current Prince of Wales though…

By your logic sally Ed Miliband, vast swathes of working class Labour voters and perhaps up to 70% of the country are “classic Tories”.

But I think we all know what’s eating you really. You fancy Prince William don’t you?

“I am not aware of any particular link between libertarianism and republicanism – indeed it is arguable that libertarianism is better suited to constitutional monarchy that it is to a republican democracy (that irritating will of the people thing…).”

There are monarchists in the Libertarian Alliance and the American anarcho-capitalist Hans-Hermann Hoppe argued that monarchy was superior to democracy in his Democracy: The God That Failed.

Does anyone know if the upcoming housing benefit cap will apply to the residents of the Royal palaces?

I feel monarchism and libertarianism are incompatible, but then I tend to apply the latter term a tad literally (which would indeed put it side by side with anarchism), so I agree that there may be many broadly libertarian thinkers who support the monarchy.

“And, on a totally different level of thought, I sometimes wonder if the best right-wing argument for a republic is the current Prince of Wales though…”

LOL! Here’s hoping.

S.Pill,

I don’t think they claim benefits – the royal list is something rather different.

But you know this, so stop playing silly buggers with political points and make the sort of substantive contributions you usually do thanks (not that any of us are likely to do this on a thread about the monarchy since we are mostly set in our views – the most interesting debate so far has been on libertarian approaches to monarchy…).

The Royal Family should not have survived the spending review.

Presumably this is part of a stimulus package to get all the long-term sick and unemployed back to work by producing souvenir tat.

Her dad’s really pleased with the news
Pays off sending girls to St Andrews

22. Chris Baldwin

Abolish the monarchy

tory troll “I don’t think they claim benefits – the royal list is something rather different.”

Is it tax payers money? Then it is just the same.

This is the trouble with tories, they have no problem with welfare as long as it is the rich who are getting it.

It’s just a Royal pantomime. Stop taking it so seriously!

“The libertarian solution would be to cut off the public subsidy and let the monarchy keep the revenue from crown lands. ”

Crown Lands are no more the personal property of the Von Battenburg family than the Crown Prosecution Service.

26. Chaise Guevara

@ 25

Agreed. Anything given to the Queen (or her predecessors) in her role as head of state is public property once the head of state is changed. Anything given personally to Elizabeth Windsor is hers.

Are we or are we not paying for this?

Oh and the many bad news? We have until Friday to out forward public dissent on Murdoch controlling all the media in the Uk….

Oh well eh?

I’ve seen some shit posted on this website in my time (I’ve wrote most of it) but this takes the cake.

The good news is that it took 25 comments before someone mentioned that the Royal Family are German (and you know what that means), and even then it was quite an oblique reference.
That’s quite chilled really.

(Nb: @14, I personally think Sally’s holding out for Harry).

Perhaps it sounds a little coarse
But I’m eager for the royal divorce…

I’m so excited by the royal wedding! But I don’t like the idea of Prince William marrying a commoner. After all, Royal Families, like ours, the Sauds and others, have been given superior blood by God Himself, to enable them to be the only ones allowed to be appointed the head of a state. If they hadn’t received this blood, the idea of some single family being the only ones ever capable of ruling a country would not only be completely preposterous, it would be a nepotistic, undemocratic scam.

Remember folks, anyone who isn’t walking around with biggggggg smiles on their faces about yesteday’s joyous and wonderful news is probably a PC Guardian reading marxist, Monarchy hating Muslim extremist British destroying killjoy!!!

Oh and the HARDWORKING AND DECENT LAW ABIDING taxpayer should have to pay for the Royals to get married. Just so long as they arn’t paying for trendy right-on causes for asylum seekers, gays Muslims blah blah blah blah blah!!!
